Today is the final day of Manu's internship; and I want to let you know that once again it has bee.na pleasure to have Manu at OLPC working as part of our team. Again, he has been studious and imaginative, respectful and thought-provoking, and productive and creative-in short, everything I have come to expect from him. Manu participated in six different efforts this summer, many of which he brought to a satisfactory conclusion; and others he will continue to work on during the comingacademicsemester. These efforts are: . 1) He converted a key application, Paint, for the laptop from a structural model to an object-oriented model. This enables the application to run in the Sugar environment (Sugar is the user interface paradigm of the laptop). This proof of concept is useful not only for Paint, but for other existing applications that are ported to the laptop. 2) He developed a wholly new Paint Activity in collaboration with the OLPC staff and researchers from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The application, written in Python, will be shipped as a core activity. Manu continues to work with the team to develop new features. 3) He analyzed additional formats (djvu and tiff) that are under consideration for integration with the Read activity. (You may recall that last summer Manu led the effort to develop the E-book reader for the laptop.) 4) Manu continues to work on game development for the laptop. He led the effort to "Sugarize" the logic game, Deducto. (Last semester, Manu led an open source community group that he founded to port Deducto to Python.) He will work on a new feature this coming semester that will enable children and teachers to create new Deducto challenges.

Dear Dr. Bhatia,

For the third time, I am writing to you with regard to Manusheel Gupta'sinternship at One Laptop per Child (OLPC). Today is the final day of Manu'sinternship; and I want to let you know that once again it has bee.na pleasureto have Manu at OLPC working as part of our team. Again, he has beenstudious and imaginative, respectful and thought-provoking, and productiveand creative-in short, everything I have come to expect from him.

Manu participated in six different efforts this summer, many of which hebrought to a satisfactory conclusion; and others he will continue to work onduringthe comingacademicsemester. Theseeffortsare: .

1) He converted a key application, Paint, for the laptop from a structuralmodel to an object-oriented model. This enables the application to run inthe Sugar environment (Sugar is the user interface paradigm of thelaptop). This proof of concept is useful not only for Paint, but for otherexisting applications that are ported to the laptop.

2) He developed a wholly new Paint Activity in collaboration with the OLPCstaff and researchers from University of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The application,written in Python, will be shipped as a core activity. Manu continues towork with the team to develop new features.

3) He analyzed additional formats (djvu and tiff) that are underconsideration for integration with the Read activity. (You may recall thatlast summer Manu led the effort to develop the E-book reader for thelaptop.)

4) Manu continues to work on game development for the laptop. He ledthe effort to "Sugarize" the logic game, Deducto. (Last semester, Manu ledan open source community group that he founded to port Deducto toPython.) He will work on a new feature this coming semester that willenable children and teachers to create new Deducto challenges.

5) He continued his community outreach efforts:

a) He was a co-coordinator of the inaugural OLPC Game Jam. At theJam, he guided the developers of Kuku and 3D Pong Game. He alsogave a presentation about OLPC to the attendees;

b) He advised a developer in the creation of some activities that use"Chimpanzee Fonts";

c) He advised a developer in how to use the laptop for island watermonitoring;

d) With a colleague, he gave an OLPC presentation at the MITEntrepreneurs Club. He also presented OLPC at the MIT EnterpriseForum.

6) Perhaps Manu's most exciting undertaking to date is the work he isdoing with Carla Gomez Monroy and Matt Keller from OLPC, andBhalchandra Joshi from Reliance to set-up a pilot of the OLPC project inMumbai. He is currently involved in developing frameworks (technical andnetwork checklists) for an August deployment.

Manu informed me that software companies will visit your campus this fall torecruit students. As Manu is among one of the top students in his class, Iimagine that he will be under pressure to interview with numerous companies.Further, I understand that every student is expected to have at least one joboffer before graduation. I am pleased to offer Manu a position at OLPC. Ihope that with this offer in hand, he will be free to either pursue a program ingraduate school, or continue his involvement with our organization, or both asthey are not mutually exclusive.

I want to thank you very much for the continued opportunity to work withManu. He is an outstanding young man and a bright reflection of NSIT. I lookforward to continuing to work with him in our efforts to bring one laptop perchild to India.

Sincerely,

Walter BenderPresident, Software and Content
