MilkHot DogRESTAURANT GUIDE FOR DOWNTOWN OSHAWA
INTRODUCTION
All of Downtown Oshawa’s cafes and restaurants are notable for one reason or another; however, with limited space, we cannot feature them all. Those that are amazing, or have gathered much acclaim, or offer an interesting experience are featured in the front; we try to mix this up from year to year. There are others that deserve honourable mention, and thereby are highlighted below. Also because of space limitations, the restaurants in the Costco Power Centre, such as Panera Bread, Fire-house Subs and Thai Express, do not receive coverage in this guide. We thank the Downtown Oshawa BIA (www.downtownoshawa.ca) for their assistance in producing Let’s Eat.

To see who has the best jerked chicken, you’ll have to visit Beryl’s Pepperpot, Caribbean Flavah, and Yola’s Caribbean Cuisine. Jimmy Guaco’s Bordertown Burritos is a Tex-Mex ex-perience like none other; open really late on Saturday nights.
The live music scene continues to grow. For the latest, check out the Oshawa Music Hall, Moustache Club, The Junction and Wasted Space on Facebook. The Regent Theatre offers live music & movies nights, while sports & entertainment are the specialty at the GM Centre.
HONOURABLE MENTION
For Brazilian treats, custom cakes made-to-order, a tasty light lunch, or a coffee meeting off-the-grid, Felicios Cake Boutique is located on Albert St. Nourished On The Go is the only cafe Downtown that serves Vegan fair exclusively. With daily specials (listed online) and a specialty in gourmet burgers - The Patty Shack is the home of the Power Pounder. Fazio’s Restaurant & Wine Experience is truly the only fine dining experience in Downtown Oshawa; this is the place to be for a special occasion.
For Pizza, both Pompeii Pizzeria and Reginos Pizza have a following. Riley’s Olde Towne Pub is a pre-hockey game fav, with pub fare and a variety of unique spaces (pub, piano bar, pool room). Located on Bond St., Oshawa Thai Cuisine is a Downtown main stay, with dine-in, take-out and delivery options. Some say that Maharaja Authentic Indian Cuisine offers the best Indian food in Durham Region; open 7 days 11am-10pm.
Open lunch & dinner, Monday-Saturday, Maza Kabob is the only place Downtown that focuses on Halal Afghani dishes; however, it is not easy to find - located at the rear of Mike’s Place or accessible via a public parking lot on Athol Street.
IN MEMORY OF: Sally Grande, 1951-2015Retired multi-cultural librarian; Regular contributor to Downtown Dining Guide; Advocate for vegetarian selection in local restaurants; Co-founder & manager for DurhamVeg; Founder of HotRoots Soups Festival; Member Oshawa Art Association; Owner of the Creative Carrot studio as the “carrot lady”; Former editor of Greanleaf for Oshawa Gar-den Club; and avid volunteer for We Grow Food. Open Monday to Friday, 9am-5pm, Tutto is located on Simcoe Street South next door to Fazio’s. Tutto is not fast food; it is quality food that is ready-for-consumption, including fresh fruits, salads, gourmet sandwiches, and desserts. Freezers contain ready-meals for home or the cottage, such as lasagna and Ace Bakery breads, while the hot express lunch table contains a variety of good regular eats, plus specials like osso buco, roasted turkey, file of sole and maple bacon mac ‘n’ cheese. If you are lucky, the daily spe-cials will include the ever so popular Arancini (stuffed rice balls). Tutto also caters.

Editor’s Choice - Lunch for Two: for an entrée from the lunch table, try Chicken Parmigiano, which is breaded and served in a plum tomato sauce with mozzarella cheese; a feature (pasta, rice or potato) and two vegetable sides accompany entrées ($11). Or, consider an Artisan Sandwich, such as The Italian – Genoa salami, prosciutto corto, mortadella & provolone cheese, organic greens & sprouts on freshly baked Ace Bakery bread ($8). One can add soup or salad and a drink to any menu item for $4. Net cost Lunch for Two, without drinks: $19.
PizzaMunno is a new family establishment in Downtown Oshawa, with a mission to preserve the authenticity of real village Italian pizza. Both the sauce and dough are made daily, while many of the meat ingredients are from a local butcher. The sauce and dough do not contain dairy, ani-mal products, preservatives, concentrates, added sugars, or coloring. Custom pizzas are priced by the size and by the quantity of toppings, starting at
$10 for medium and $12 for a large, while Baked Calzone are $7 and Salads $4. PizzaMunno delivers and caters. Open 7 days a week, lunch through late evening.

Editor’s Choice - Delivery Dinner for Two: consider a large Pizza Amalfi – tomato sauce, mozzarella, roasted chicken, sautéed spinach, goat cheese and roasted red peppers, or a large Vegan Antonio – herbed olive oil & garlic, roasted zucchini, fresh baby spinach, black olives, and cherry tomatoes ($20 each). Allow $2.50 for delivery. Net cost Dinner for Two, delivered to your home: $22.50.
Thai Culture is strategically located on the corner of King & Mary, nearby the GM Centre and Regent Theatre. The restaurant features the fusion of Ma-laysian and Thai Cuisine, including influences from China and India. The entrée selection is best de-scribed as vast, organized into categories of chick-en, beef, lamb, seafood and vegetable. Most en-trées are $12-15, with the best values coming from the Noodle & Rice or Vegetable menus. Group and family menu combinations, take-out and delivery services are available. There is something to please everyone here.

Editor’s Choice - Dinner for Two: Share Crispy Shrimp Chips with Peanut Sauce and Seafood Satay Skewers ($4 and $8) as the appetizer course, followed by Hot and Sour Soup, and a Green Mango Salad ($7 and $9). For the entrée, order one meat and one veg dish - Curry Pad Thai with Beef, and Avacodo & Pea-nut Stir-Fry ($12 each). For dessert, round out the evening with Coconut Sticky Rice, and Deep Fried Mango ($7 and $8). Net cost Dinner for Two, without drinks: $67.
Isabella’s is best described as a small urban café with a good vibe. It is universally appealing, as can be seen in the diverse clientele that frequent the place. Isabella’s is open Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm, and Saturdays, 10am-4pm. Interesting panini and sandwiches can be bought for $5-7, while soups, salads and breakfast items can be purchased for $3-$4.50. Of course, there are chocolates avail-able as well; consider sampling the Masala Chai and the Mayan Spice chocolates.

Editor’s Choice - Lunch for Two: their Grilled Veggie panini is much hyped in online reviews (roasted red pepper, grilled zucchini, provolone on focaccia bread, $7.00). The Oven Roasted Chicken sandwich is exceptional (roasted chicken, lettuce, tomato, provolone on multigrain bread, $6.50). For drinks consider the Mixed Berry Banana Smoothie ($3.45) or a 20oz signa-ture Cappuccino (so big that its serve in a coffee-cup-like bowl, $4.30). Net cost Lunch for Two, with drinks: $21.25.

There are far too many things on the menu at Buster Rhino’s that will make you hungry, and there’s lots happening at Busters – whisky tasting nights (as they have 140+ different whiskeys), comedy nights and live music nights. They have the only seasonal patio in Oshawa that occupies part of the street!
Editor’s Choice - Dinner for Two: order one of 12 local craft beers on tap to start ($6+/-). Share Pop Caps (fried jalapeno) and a Cornbread Basket as appetizers ($8 and $7). For dinner, con-sider the unique flavor of Smoked Chicken Wings with a Georgia Mustard Dry Rub and a side of Hushpuppies ($13), or a Pulled Pork Sandwich with a side of Hand-Cut Fries ($10). Net cost Din-ner for Two with two craft beers each: $62.

Mediterranean Gyroworks is an off-the-grid place – almost invisible on the internet – but frequented by all those that have found it. It is probably the greatest value per pound of food in Downtown Os-hawa, as evidenced by the long line of construc-tion workers and students at lunch. The special-ties are Shawarma (pita, plates, or souvlaki style), Falafels, and Greek Salads. The smell and sight of the Shawarma flame cooking is a culinary expe-
rience in itself. The place is open Monday-Satur-day, lunch to dinner.

13
Editor’s Choice - Lunch for Two: no one person can eat all of this, but order a Shawarma Pita Wrap each, with all the fixings. The sheer quantity of food will form half the lunchtime conversation. Plan to spend $8.65 each for a combo, which comes with a drink. Net cost Lunch for Two, with drinks: $17.30.

Now in their 3rd year, Berry Hill continues to broad-en their offerings: catering, weekend brunches, the hidden rear patio, home-catered holiday meals, and starting in the spring of 2016 – gourmet evening meals. The philosophy at Berry Hill is to celebrate life simple pleasures, fresh juiced oranges, house baked desserts, farm to cup coffee and real hollandaise. They aim to make sustainable choices, together with butchers, farmers, roasters and other hard working suppliers in our community. The new dinner menu will bring to the plate meats and fresh vegetables raised and grown with in Durham Region, and fresh Ocean Wise seafood - Real Food with Real Ingredi-ents, as they say.
Editor’s Choice - Saturday Brunch for Two: try one of their famous Eggs Benes, like the SmokedSalmon with capers & red unions, served with a fresh fruit salad and B.H. breakfast potatoes ($13.50). Or, try Our Famous Banana French Toast with coconut rum caramel bananas over egg dipped toast ($11.50). Add for each patron a cup of direct trade, organic coffee to start, and a Strawber-ry Mimosa with fresh juiced strawberries & prosecco with the meal ($2, $8.50). Net cost Brunch for Two, with two drinks each: $46.

A Durham Region Sicilian family introduced Avanti Trattoria to Downtown Oshawa almost 10 years ago. Its popularity never seems to wane. A trattoria is an Italian-style eating establishment, less formal than a ristorante. Avanti features fine architectural finishes and a large patio of European flavour. For lunch, many will gravitate to the interesting Insalate ($7-11) or Panini ($9-11) menus, but we like dinner here.

Editor’s Choice - Dinner for Two: For the Antipasto course, share the Brushetta ($6.25) or another great appetizer. For the entrée, consider Pasta Tagliatelle (goat cheese, artichoke hearts, sundried tomatoes, roasted red pepper sauce, $15.75) and Pizze Quattro Stagione (mushrooms, olives, ar-tichokes, prosciutto, zucchini, mozzarella, tomato sauce, $15.25). Comple-ment the meal with a bottle of Chianti Colli Senesi ($39). Net cost Dinner for Two, with a bottle of wine: $104.

Located in Downtown Oshawa on Simcoe North for nearly a decade, Osaka Sushi appeals to the office market and university students alike. Osaka Sushi is a reliable, affordable and comfortable dining experi-ence. The service is quick and efficient.
Editor’s Choice - Lunch for Two: The All You Can Eat week-day lunch ($12) will universally appeal to the sushi fan and novice alike. If you are with the uninitiated, focus on the California Roll, Shrimp Tempura, Beef Teriyaki and Gyoza (deep fried dumpling). The Salmon, Red Snapper and White Tuna Sushi are never fail, however - the Oshawa Roll (6pcs) spicy shrimp, and crabmeat, topped with eel and avocado should not be missed. Net cost Lunch for Two, without drinks: $24.
OSAKA SUSHI
The White Apron is located on Bond Street, across from the GO Bus Terminal. The restaurant setting is the reminiscent quality of a Restoration Hard-ware catalog and the service is attentive. The owner Peter is a familiar face, as he has been in the restaurant industry for 40 years, having owned successful restaurants in Toronto and Oshawa. White Apron is open from 7am to 3pm 7 days a week. The focus is on all day breakfast and the
French Colonial, Vietnamese-inspired Bánh Mì Sandwich; entrées average $7-10 – you will get your money’s worth.

Located at 15 Simcoe St N, 15 Sports & Grill is a unique food and entertainment establishment bring-ing pub fair and 18 craft & domestic beers on tap to Oshawa’s Downtown. With 10 large screen HD TVs there is not a bad seat in the house to take in a game. The bar also features open mic nights and ka-raoke nights. It is a convenient layover stop if you are waiting for a band to start upstairs in the Moustache Club (same owners). The menu features a good mix of Starters, such as Broccoli Poppers, Bam Bam Shrimp, Sweet Potato Fries and Deep Fried Pickles ($7-11). Entrées include the usual pub fare of wings, fish and chips, tacos, wraps and burgers ($11-18).

Net cost Dinner for One, without draft beer: $19.

Nourished On The Go is dedicated to healthy, re-sponsible and compassionate food; which is what defines vegan cuisine. They sell healthy gourmet vegan food, frozen soups and stews in a fast-food setting. Although, fast-food usually produces waste - Nourished On The Go uses compostable contain-ers and utensils. Special order anything vegan from an elaborate cake, to a small batch of your favorite recipe, to an entire custom menu for any sized event. They are open Monday-Friday 11-7pm, and Saturday 11-5pm.

Jesus Pena, the owner of Viva Burritos, worked originally as a Systems Engineer in Mexico. After moving to Canada he decided to make his dream of becoming a restaurant owner a reality; Viva Burrito has quickly became a staple in Downtown Oshawa’s growing food district. Open Monday through Friday for lunch & dinner, and for dinner Saturday nights, Spicy Affairs has worked its way to becoming #2 of all restaurants in Oshawa on TripAdvisor in just a few short years. Spicy Affairs unlocked the daytime business-mar-ket magic: super-fast, inexpensive, and ethnic-cui-sine served for all palates (Indian Spicy, Canadian Spicy or not-at-all spicy). As for nighttime business – add a feel of intimacy and beer from India. The
menu is Halal, 98% gluten free, and they know the difference between vegans and vegetarians. Spicy Affairs caters and accommodates take-out orders.
