DESCRIPTION

Ego should be such that people would like you and welcome you. Such ego can become so purified progressively that there remains only one degree difference between the self and the absolute Self (paramatma). And if the same ego walks in the wrong direction then not only it will not bring about one’s own salvation, but it will hurt many people. Revered Dadashri particularly explains in detail about this crazy ego which is one grave danger zone in the progress in the path of moksha. This crazy ego exists everywhere and keeps one wandering in world intoxicated in ‘I-ness.’

EDITORIALNo matter how many good qualities a human being has but if his ego is not beautiful then

everything is useless. Ego should be beautiful. Ego should be such that people would like you andwelcome you. Such ego can become so purified progressively that there remains only one degreedifference between the self and the absolute Self (paramatma).

And if the same ego walks in the wrong direction then not only it will not bring about one’sown salvation, but it will hurt many people. Such unnatural (vibhavik) ego expresses as ego ofdoership (garva), intoxicated pride (mada), jealousy (matsar), pride (maan), ego with rich material(abhimaan), hypocrisy (dambha), false arrogance (ghamand) etc. These are all different formsof ego and crazy ego is also one type of ego disliked by people. Crazy ego is devoid of properworldly interaction, it is laden with hurt to others, and it will show something that is different fromthe world.

Revered Dadashri particularly explains in detail about this crazy ego which is one gravedanger zone in the progress in the path of moksha. This crazy ego exists everywhere and keepsone wandering in world intoxicated in ‘I-ness.’ One thinks that he does not have such ego butit would be still lying around within assuming a small shape. It will not take much time for it toflare up to a huge size. You should identify this ego and eradicate it from its very roots. Nowwhat will this crazy ego do? It will show the wrong to the right one, it will not let one acceptthe right talk, one will think that ‘I am right, my talk is right’ by having such insistence he willhurt others, he will try to do all the work through his own will and intellect and will keep creatingentanglements, it will take sides with the intellect, it will create divisiveness by siding with theintellect, it will make one have intents of harm to others, it will bite the nimit the evidence ina happening, it will protect one’s own self, one’s own talk, and one’s own belief, it will seenegative in whatever it is, it will create interference in everything believing ‘I am smart’, it willcommit deceit to satisfy his pride (maan) hunger, and if his pride is not satisfied then he will insultthe other person, it will wish bad for others, it will see the faults of everybody else and will seehimself as ‘I am very wise’, ‘I know’, ‘I am special’, ‘I am something’, ‘I have skills’, it willperpetuate such intoxication that ‘one cannot do without me’, such a crazy ego laden one wouldnot have complete awareness of Gnan but he would talk as if he is fully awakened and aware, and makes a fake show, opens a spiritual shop and opens a new path in religion that leadsnowhere, believing that he has attained the absolute Self.

Such mad ego will show its true colors in many ways. Here in Akram path—direct pathto Self-realization, after attaining Gnan, ego is discharging and resolving and yet one has to

Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego{ Please note that ‘S’ Self denotes the awakened Self, separate from the ‘s’ worldly self. The Selfis the Soul within all living beings. The term pure Soul is used by the Gnani Purush for the awakenedSelf, after the Gnan Vidhi. The absolute Soul is the fully enlightened Self. The worldly soul is theself. In the same manner, ‘Y’ You refers to the awakened Soul or Self, and the ‘y’ you refers to theworldly self. This differentiation is unique to critical understanding of the separation of the Self fromthe self a/k/a the non-Self complex that is accomplished in the Gnan Vidhi of Akram Vignan.}

What is ego?

Questioner: What is ahamkar ego?Where did it come from and who did it cometo?

Dadashri: ‘I am Chandubhai,’ verily isego. To claim ‘I-ness potapanu’ where‘You—the Self’ are not, is verily ego aham.If ‘You’ remain in ‘swakshetra – place of theSelf’ then You are verily Atma— the Self. Andto be at such imaginary location as ‘I amChandubhai’ verily is ahamkar ego. It is adestructible (vinashi) thing. It is not comingfrom anywhere. It arises and dies.

The belief ‘I am this’ applied where ‘I –the Self’ is not, is called ahamkar ego. Anintent laden claim aropit bhaav at wrong placeis called ego. ‘I am Chandubhai’ is the firstego. ‘I am this woman’s husband’, is thesecond wrong belief or ego expression. ‘I amthis boy’s father’, ‘I am an uncle’, all theseare ego (ahamkar). To say what one is, isbeing without ego (nirahamkar). One is‘Shuddhatma–pure Soul’ in the real and if onespeaks with awareness of, ‘I am Shuddhatma,’then it is not considered ego. What is the

gunadharma (intrinsic properties that have aspecific function) of ego? It does not doanything at all, yet it only believes that ‘I did’.Ego is a subtle thing, actions are gross. Howcan a subtle thing perform gross action?

Types of ego

Questioner: Are there different kindsof egos?

Dadashri: To refer to a relative thingas ‘I am’ is ego. Pride with three components, arrogance, jealousy, respect and disrespect –are all different words used at different timesto explain the varying degrees of the ego. Thatis why the Gnanis have given them differentnames.

There are two kinds of ego. One islifeless (nirjeev) and the other is alive (sajeev).Akram’s mahatmas live their lives with thehelp of the lifeless (nirjeev discharging) ego.The egoism of doership (kartapanu) leaves;thereafter only the egoism of suffering(bhoktapanu) remains.

When does ego leave? When you acceptthat ego is wrong then it will leave. Where

remain alert. Having become the Self, where is the place for ‘I am right and you are wrong’?You have to remain as the Self, and the moment the crazy ego arises; throw it out with a slap. The lifeless ego has to be resolved, and not protected at all. If that ego is not eradicated alongwith its very roots, it will not take long for it to grow all over again. Therefore, our goal now shouldbe to begin the inner spiritual effort of digging out that ego and accomplish the ultimate clear anddistinct experience of the Self.

there is conflict, you should understand thatone’s own ego is verily wrong. If youunderstand this much then that ego will leave.

How can one become completelyegoless? When conviction is establishedcompletely that ‘I am Shuddhatma,’ and whencontinuous awareness is set then ego leaves, but after conviction also ego remains like ashadow; original ego leaves. Shadow likemeans dramatic ego.

Ego in the Kramic path and the Akrampath

What does ego mean? It is that whichruns far away from God. As the ego increases;words like obstinacy, pride, ego of doership(garva), arrogance are used to describe itsintensity. Ego arises the moment one moves alittle away from the Lord within—the Self.

What is the Kramic path? In this pathone is told: ‘Purify the ego.’ In this path onehas to purify the ego that has becomeexcessive. So he has to purify the ego gradually,a little at a time. And when the ego becomescompletely pure then only he attains the Self. The unnatural (vibhavik) ego expresses aspride, deceit, hypocrisy, arrogance etc. Theseare all different forms of ego. A person maybe earning a minimum wage but he walksaround in fancy clothes. So people willcomment, ‘He is a phony.’ He walks aroundpompously. It’s like a fox dressed up in tiger’sskin. Arrogant people do not have respect forothers. They display arrogance and scorn ineverything they do. If someone asks a man’swife what he is like, she’ll say, ‘He is of nouse at all.’ There are all unnatural forms ofego. You have to get rid of all of them. Thereare many difficulties in the Kramic path. Oneis doomed if he happens to meet with

temptation on this path. Our Akram path doesnot have such dangers. It is a path with security. It is a secure path. There is no problem evenif you happen to meet people who tempt youon the way. The other person will becomeconfused but you will not be affected.

Karma chetna – Karmafada chetna

After receiving Gnan from ‘us’, everyonestill has the ego, but it is the discharging ego;it is nikali ego. What is the nikali ego like?It will comply. It will listen to You; it is not thefoolish ego. Whereas the ego in the Kramicpath says ‘I have to do this. I have to renouncethis, etc.’

To renounce and to be naturallyunattached are different states. The one whois naturally free and unattached to any specificobject or person, does not even rememberwhat he has renounced. What is naturalrenunciation? One forgets naturally and easilythat which was renounced naturally and easily.

If renunciation (tyaag) of smoking a bidi(hand-rolled cigarette) has happened to youas a natural process then the bidi will not comein your memory and if you had deliberatelyavoided smoking the bidi then you will keepremembering that, ‘I have renounced bidi.’ Sothe renunciation that simply is, as a naturalstate, is altogether a different thing. There isno ego of that renunciation (tyaag). But somepeople exercise the mad ego of havingrenounced something. Hey you! Therenunciation has come into existence, and isworking for you, so why don’t you remainstraight and easygoing? Why do you keepbabbling about what you have renounced? Whyare you doing egoism of that? Renunciationwhich has happened naturally is consideredvery good. As many engaging situations that

entangle—lafru—decrease, that manyexternally induced trouble (upadhi) decrease. And how is our path of moksha? It is Akrampath, therefore let the past life entanglementsbe as they are, do not create new ones, andbe done with the old ones; they too will leavewhen they will fall off on their own.

In the Kramic path, the ego is a chargeego. Here, in the Akram path, the ego isdischarge ego. The ego in the Kramic pathbinds karmas because the seeker believes hehas renounced: ‘I have renounced this. I stillneed to renounce that…’ The fact is hisrenunciation is the effect of his previous life’sego but by believing and saying this, he chargesnew karma. The Gnani Purush eliminates thatwhich binds karmas. It is that simple! It isstraightforward.

Two paths for the ego

Questioner: The bhaavna intent thatwe express (intent in discharge); it binds meritkarma or demerit karma, so then whose intentis that?

Dadashri: It is of the ego (ahamkar). The one who wants happiness has the intent(bhaavna) that if I do merit karma-gooddeeds- punyai then merit karma (punyai) willbe bound for me. He wants happiness (sukha)but this intent of his does not materialize. Andbecause of the beatings of ongoing egoism, and because he doesn’t have Gnan; not havingunderstanding of by doing what he can attainhappiness and by doing what he attainsunhappiness; the intent of unhappiness startsto rise.

It is worth making two paths for theego: If you want to go to moksha, (attainliberation) you should come near me-to Me,to become free from the ego. The one who is

free from ego can make you free from ego.No one else can make you free from the ego(ahamkar). If you want worldly happinessthen make the ego beautiful. People will say,‘Chandubhai, What a wonderful human being!’Everyone would say this. Such an ego is calleda beautiful ego. Then you will get worldlyhappiness.

Ugly ego – Beautiful ego

Happiness can’t be attained by wrongegoism. Ego should be normal. It should besuch that people find it acceptable. This meansbeautiful ego is needed. Is ugly ego good oris beautiful ego good?

Questioner: Beautiful is good.

Dadashri: Yes, beautiful ego is good.Ugly ego will say every step of the way, ‘Don’tyou know? I don’t care for anybody!’ Whyare you, who care for no one, acting mad?Who are you to care for no one? If the policearrest you now, you will wet your pants! Look, you should not talk crazy stuff like this, youshould talk properly; you should talk in a waythat people feel good. Does your brain fly offthe handle or not? Do you behave and dowhat a buffalo’s brother does? Have you seena buffalo’s brother or not? Hey! He will flipthe opponent in a way that every part of hisbody is broken; ego should not be like that.Egoism means, one does something that makeshim look crazy.

The nature of the crazy ego

Questioner: I did not understand thecorrect meaning of this. To do according toone’s will, is that called true ego?

Dadashri: No, it is not about thedetermined will. Too many people do whatthey have determined to do according to their

Page 6: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

DADAVANI

will. Egoism means he does something that iscrazy and evident to all; that is called crazyego. Proper worldly interaction is not seen. All these people do worldly interactions butnone of them are called wrong, none of theiracts are called wrong. But whatever is calledcrazy; will be declared as egoism by the people. That which is of a new order from that whichis the world; and shows it is called ego.

Questioner: Is one not informed aboutit?

Dadashri: There is no awareness at all!Forget about the information, there is noawareness whatsoever! There is no awarenessat all of the crazy words or acts that one does.Only then will such ego express. Fifty peopleare sitting here at ease, but the one who doessomething totally wrong, will be branded bythe people immediately as, ‘the crazy egoist!’There should be normality in worldlyinteractions vyavaharikta, that which isaccepted by all. Whatever work you do, allthe people will say, ‘Brother, you did goodwork.’ What type of ego should one have?Ego should be such that people accept it. Therehere is crazy ego and people do not like it.

Questioner: I want to know moreabout crazy ego.

Dadashri: Someone says, ‘I can blowoff the whole mountain; that is the type ofperson I am.’ All of us will then say, ‘Is hecrazy or what? What type of egoism is hedoing?’

Questioner: Crazy.

Dadashri: But we don’t call this typeof ego as crazy ego. This was mentioned asan example. All these other talks here that, ‘Iwill do this and I will do that’ in a huff and puff

attitude, now he can’t do any of it and onlythe ego is speaking. These are all crazy egosthat have been stocked and expressing only. The one who is able to do, he will not do suchegoism at all.

Questioner: But how can it be knownthat this is a crazy ego?

Dadashri: Any ego that gives pain(dukha) is crazy ego. If someone tells me,‘Dadaji, you have no sense’, I wouldunderstand; there my crazy ego will not arise. And pain will not come to Me at all! His egowill hurt him, how can it hurt me?

Crazy ego exists everywhere, and itmakes the owner wander down the skid rowin intoxication. It needs to be identified anderadicated.

Questioner: That intoxication of ego isgreater then alcohol, it will not go down at all.

Dadashri: Just as these sadhus—thosewho have renounced worldly life, decide thatas the Lord Mahavira had said that ‘Vankjaday pachhima—after I am gone, thefollowers will turn out to be obstinate andunaware,’ therefore, I must be careful not tobe obstinate or crass. For us here in AkramVignan, we do not have any concern withobstinacy or crassness. But, we should bevery aware of the interference of this ego.The crazy ego exists for sure. We have tokeep constant awareness on that ego. Doesthat crazy ego flare up even now or not? Isit still there?

Questioner: Now it is not that much. But there is some lying there, not much.

Dadashri: No. It would be still lyingaround there assuming a small shape. It willnot take much time to flare up to a huge size

tomorrow. You should eradicate it from its veryroots, and then only the work is done.

Questioner: How can it be uprooted?By doing bhaavna—deep inner intent?

Dadashri: No. Just keep the awareness.Make efforts in some other direction. If hemoves in any other crazy or wrong directionthen you should tell him—the file one, ‘Youare being obstinate and crass.’

There is crazy ego in everybody. Thatcrazy ego shows the wrong as the right to theone who means well and wants to do right. Ifyou have six or seven files at home the crazyego will show wrong about all seven of them. What vitarag science says is that you are towin over the prakruti (the non-Self complex)of all seven of them. What does winning overmean? It means that they all become veryhappy with you. You win over them in a waythat they do not feel any hurt. You do not haveto win over the world outside, win over theseven files that you have at home. The worldhas already been conquered. You won’tachieve anything by leaving behind your filesand running away to become an ascetic. Thatfile will have to be won. That file has come foryou only.

Crazy ego will do very bad things. Itwon’t allow one to understand anything at all.It will keep on doing all the wrong things. Itwill see file’s faults and will see the self asclean that ‘I am very wise’ and will protectone’s own faults. It will tell the self that, ‘No,you are not at fault.’ Thus, it will protect itsown self. It is the lawyer itself, it is the judgeitself and it is also the plaintiff itself, now tellme, what will be the condition? What will bethe judgment if you are the plaintiff, the lawyerand the judge? And here the ego will see the

other as the guilty person and protect its ownself!

To see the faults of others is crazy ego

In the Kramic path (the traditional stepby step path to liberation), one is not able tosee one’s own faults at all. People on this pathwill even admit that they are aware that theyhave a lot of faults, yet they are unable to seethem. If they confess this, then I would concedethat they are indeed worthy of liberation, butif a person tells me that he sees only a few ofhis own faults, then such a person has a longway to go. How can you tell me that you canonly see a handful of your faults when you aresaturated with them? Do you think that thefaults that you see are the only faults that youhave? Krupadudev has said:

‘If these mistakes of mine are notacknowledged, then how will I attain salvation?’People keep just singing this, that’s all. ‘I ama vessel of infinite faults Oh Lord.’ This toopeople keep singing. No one has been able tosee his own fault.

When you begin to see your own faults, you have finally understood the essence ofKrupadudev’s dharma. Today you see yourfaults, but tomorrow you will not see the samefaults but new ones and the day after, you willsee newer ones. That is when you can beassured that you understand and are followingKrupadudev’s dharma. You have notunderstood anything until then.

The stock (karma caused in past life) issuch that one is not able to see one’s ownfaults. One is not able to see the tile or thebottom of the entire complex. If it is seen evenonce, then it is done. Thereafter that crazyego will not arise. It has to be identified andunderstood.

Page 8: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

DADAVANI

The nature of ego is to do the businessof keep seeing those past faults.

Questioner: That talk had come outthat on one side the fault keeps on happeningand pratikraman keeps on happening andagain the fault keeps on happening, so yousaid just now that seeing the fault is the businessof egoism only. So is ego the root cause offaults happening continuously?

Dadashri: This is the craziness of egoonly.

The seeing of faults of others is the echoof our own fault only. The biggest fault is ofours only. That is called crazy ego.

‘Mine is correct’ – that verily is ego

When you come to believe that it is onlyyour fault when matabheda (divisiveness dueto differences in opinions) arises, then you willcome to the point of freedom. There is noother solution. To undertake a solution is oursecret egoism. Why do you have to look forthe solution?

It is one’s egoism when one believesand holds, ‘this of mine is correct, and his iswrong.’ In worldly interactions whatever is heldto be ‘right’ and ‘wrong’ is all egoism.Nevertheless, what is right and what is wrongin worldly interactions? Anything that hurtshumans or any living being, is wrong. Thatwhich harms worldly interactions, harmssociety, harms living beings, harms small livingbeings or other living beings, is all consideredwrong by us. Besides this, there is no suchthing as ‘right’ or ‘wrong,’ everything is‘correct’ and as it should be. Each and everyhuman being has his or her own ‘drawing’ orperspective. However in the final analysis allare ‘drawings,’ and these drawings are

imaginary, not real. You have to understandonce and for all what this ‘drawing’ (the relativeview) is! Once you understand the totality ofthis ‘drawing’, your love towards it willdisappear.

Insistence through one’s ego

Nobody’s is wrong in this world.Everything is a temporary truth, so what is thepoint of insistence? Nevertheless if the otherperson insists, then I will let go. All you cando is to express your intent bhaavna, bysaying, ‘Brother, this is how it is,’ and beyondthat there should be no insistence. The onewho has no insistence about what he knows,is mukta liberated, is he not?

Questioner: Which knowledge are youreferring to here?

Dadashri: To insist on your knowledgemeans is when you explain your knowledge tosomeone and he responds, ‘No, what you aresaying is wrong!’ And then you insist on whatyou know. That is called insisting without lettinggo pakkad. All you have to do is to say once,‘Brother, try and understand it once more.’And then he will reply, ‘No, I have understood.Your talk is dead wrong.’ Then you have tolet go of the insistence. That is what ‘we—theGnani Purush’ are begging to say. It is thebiggest ego to say, ‘I will not agree’. Whatday is it today?

Questioner: Friday.

Dadashri: If I were to tell someone itis Friday, he may say, ‘No, it’s Saturday,’ Iwould then say, ‘Why don’t you check itagain!’ But even then if he insists that it isSaturday, then I would let go and not continueto insist. This is not only in worldly interactionsbut it is also applicable to Gnan. Why bang

Page 9: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

8 March 2010

DADAVANI

your head? You can bang your head all nightbut the other person is like a brick wall. Whenhe does not let go, it is better for you to doso. You will not become free as long as youhave an ego about not wanting to give up.

‘I am right,’ that ego also will have tobe removed

Ego will always in the business ofavoiding looking bad in the eyes of others.

When the world is held as ‘it is wrong’aversion (dwesh) happens and when the worldis held as ‘it is right’ then attachment (raag)happens. ‘We—the Gnani Purush’ just simplyknow (jaaniye) that ‘this is wrong’, and thatis verily the ‘Gnan’!

‘Mine is correct,’ is a kind of ego, andthat too will have to go, will it not?

Now if someone else is talking out there, then it will remain at least that much presentwithin that ‘this ours is correct’, ‘this whichwe are following is correct’ after attaining thisGnan. The Lord has said that, this is ego. Thisego also will have to be removed. But on thebasis of Akram Gnan this ego of ours, is lifeless. So it will dissipate some time or another. Theego is alive in Kramic path, and this ego in theAkram path is lifeless. Everything is dramatic.Anger-pride-deceit-greed, all are dramatic.

Crazy ego will bite the nimit

If a train is stuck, some foolish one willcomment, ‘The railway people are useless. They should all be fired!’ You foolish people, who are you condemning? The workers andthe train are both vitarags (they are impartial).Nevertheless, the ego will not refrain fromplaying its role. We have become free from allsuch misunderstanding after Gnan. Outsidethere are storms of misunderstanding. When

the gutters become full with water, peoplecomplain and curse the employees of themunicipality, ‘You people do not clean out thegutters!’

If a housewife buys lentils, which do notcook well, she curses the grocer and if it comesto her mind, she will even curse the farmers! She attacks so many people this way. If youtell her to check with the neighbor, she willfind that her neighbor does not have anyproblems with her lentils! However, she has ahabit of attacking and accusing people. If hercooking turns out good, she will tell everyonein the house. That is ego. Attacking is alsoego. This ego says, ‘I am something.’ If youask, ‘What are you?’ She will say, ‘I don’texactly know, but I know I am something!’

At Diwali the host serves snacks withgood intent (bhaav) but a guest may say withresentment, ‘I don’t care for this. I don’t likeit’; that is an ugly ego. On this auspicious dayof Diwali, if he takes just a small amount ofthat snack, he will not hurt the host. Then hisego will appear good. ‘We’ would drink evenpoison if it was served to ‘us’ with goodintention. Yes, ‘we’ have solutions foreverything.

What is Akram Gnani? Akram Gnani’sego is very pleasant and wonderful. He wouldsit with you but He would also sit with thelowest of people. He would not look ugly orout of place anywhere. He would always lookwonderful. Gnanis of the Kramic path however, will not visit those who are inferior to them. They will say, ‘I will do whatever I have tobut I will not go there.’ Their ego is ugly.

All you have to care for is make surethat the ego appears beautiful. How beautifulis Dada’s ego when He comes here. Your ego

DADAVANI

too, should look just like His and then you willsee what a wonderful state that is!

Ego of ‘I-ness’: Hoonpanu

Ego is blind and therefore it will messup everything. By nature ego is blind. It seesa little through the eyes of the intellect andfollows the advice of the intellect. Ego approveseverything suggested by the intellect. Theintellect is the prime minister and ego is thepresident. In a way it is blind and cannot see.The intellect will say, ‘let us do this’ and theego will go ahead and sign. But the ego is: ‘Iam the doer’. Yes, that’s all it is; egoism of ‘I-ness-hoonpanu’, it is called the state of ‘I-ness-hoonpad’. Only after the ego dissolvesit becomes possible to preserve that which isbeneficial to the self, and to understand thatwhich is beneficial to the self. Otherwise, aslong as the ego exists, one remains blind.

Ego should be such that ‘jaanpanu -the state of ‘knowing’’ increases. Instead theego is such that it brings veils (avaran) overthe ‘knowing’. One becomes blind because ofego, and loses the state of ‘knowing.’ Suchego does a lot of harm.

What will the ego (ahamkar) not do?All this has arisen due to ego only. And whenego dissolves there is freedom mukti!

‘I am something’ – that is crazy ego

The ego should be wonderful, peopleshould like it and it should be malleable. Youshould ask the ego, ‘Show me your recordbook. Show me instances where people havegiven you respect. Show me where you havesuffered insults. What kind of happiness haveyou received? Has anyone ever held you inhigh regard?’ His father and brothers will alsosay, ‘He is worthless!’ So ask the ego, ‘Have

you won anyone’s heart?’ Even if one werespecial to just a few people, the ego would beconsidered good, but wherever he goes, people think, ‘It would be nice if he goesaway.’ That is an ugly ego. People may notsay anything to his face, but in their minds theysay, ‘What is it to me? He will meet his deaththrough his bad deeds.’ Everyone thinks oftheir own benefit except the Gnani Purush; theGnani is the only one who will tell it to youstraight.

The ego that begets you a heartywelcome time after time is an ego that is wise. But what use is the crazy ego that will begetyou a hearty welcome the first time, but onsubsequent occasions people will call youuseless and tell you to get out?

You can tell the foolish ego, ‘Do youget any respect? Why are you being egotistical? You do not have 1300 queens, do you? Youhave no wealth or property, do you? So, whatis it that makes you so foolish?’

A person has an ego of ‘I am something!’Yes, but what? This very ego makes peoplemiserable. When you look at all the stages ofspiritual development, starting from the firstthrough the twelfth, you will understand thatthe ego has caused nothing but misery. Suchan ego is a crazy ego. It makes a personbelieve he is superior and yet others aroundhim will not think so. That is a crazy ego; it isan ugly ego. The Chakravarti emperors usedto have an ego too, but it was a malleableego. One could mold it anyway one wanted.People accept such ego; it is a wise ego, whereas the other is crazy and foolish ego.We can ask this ego, ‘When have you everbeen at peace?’ Where will you find peoplewho are thrilled to see you and welcome youwarmly telling you they could not do without

DADAVANI

you? Instead, people will say, ‘Everything wasfine until he showed up!’ You have sufferedendless insults. What good is such an ego?Why would you protect such an ugly ego?Why would you take sides with it?

‘Very crazy ego is verily a big enemy’

People will not associate with you if theyfeel they will lose their reputation. ‘What wouldbe my worth?’ they fear. This kind of ego iscrazy and foolish. Before Gnan I too had anego, but it was a wise ego. I was dear toseveral people. And there would be at leastfour cars parked in front of my home everyday. But even then the ego used to bother me andI felt that if the ego were to leave, then Iwould be the emperor of this world. The egoshould be beautiful. What is the point of havinga beautiful body and an ugly ego? You canmake do with an ugly body but the ego shouldnot be ugly. Many people have ugly faces, buttheir ego is so beautiful that people willwelcome them with open arms, ‘Welcome sir.Come in.’

What is the need for the ego? How canwe even keep it alive? The one that has madeyou miserable for infinite lives is nothing but anenemy. Why must you abandon your positionas the ruler of the world and delve into pettythings like ‘this is mine’ and ‘this is yours’?

The ego is a crazy thing; you should notaccept it even if someone were to give it toyou for free. You have to remain in the Self, you have to become the Self and the momentthe crazy ego arises, throw it out.

The heavier the ego, the greater is theproblem

This ego has created nothing but a mess. You can undo the mess and accomplish your

goal by surrendering to the Gnani. A wise egowill not try to enforce its own wisdom whereasa foolish ego will criticize everything. Therefore, you either understand this fact or remainobedient and subservient (aadhin) to theGnani. Man does not have the power it takesto comply with a foolish ego, so the best waythen is to remain under the guidance of a GnaniPurush with humility. The foolish ego is sounpredictable that it will listen to the Gnani forthirty days and will discard his words andinstructions on the thirty first day! The sickerthe ego, the greater is the problem. There isno way out other than to surrender to theGnani.

What if the craziness of the ego arises?

Once a person meets a Gnani Purushand if his craziness arises due to his ego thenhe would lose the path of moksha forever, would he not? Otherwise do not come here atall, remain vitarag, stay away. There is nottoo much risk involved for the one who speaksfrom a distance however if he speaks negativelywhen he remains close to the Gnani, then it isnothing but a crazy ego. This crazy ego canruin one’s own gain.

Compassion of the Gnani

You are with me and when your fevergoes away shortly, then You are with Me forsure. This is a path of lift. However if youbecome unyielding and obstinate with Me, thenthings will be ruined for you. ‘We’ do nothave any quality that would push you awayfrom ‘us’. It is different if anything in me iswrong and unyielding, and therefore your actionbecomes inappropriate. But one-sidedinflexible obstinacy should not be there.

If your karma makes you obstinate, youhave to realize that to be so and you should

DADAVANI

tell yourself, ‘Do you not remain straightforwardhere too? I will have to fire you otherwise.’Intellect will bother you however this Akramwill protect you all the way. ‘We’ protect eventhose who may have thrown insults at us,because whatever insults he throws at us arenot due to his own free will. He is possessedby karma.

We understood that this person isabsolutely correct then we are totallystraightforward, nothing else and this otherperson keeps obstinacy even then we let it go,that too with understanding. We know that heremains obstinate because he is weak and doesnot have the energy (shakti). We keepcompassion, that too with understanding.

‘Do whatever you can’ – what kind ofego is that?

This world is so tough that it can harasseven Lord Mahavira a lot.

Even the Lord had met such questionersasking him, ‘Why did you do such a thing?’Oh, they would ask me too! This is becausehe has the right. Any person can ask anything. One can act crazy too! One will tell us toothat, ‘You do not have any sense.’ Then Iwould say, ‘I did not have that from thebeginning, you just found out today, but I knowfrom the beginning.’ Now he is speaking onown responsibility. But we have to explain himand turn him because he becomes responsiblefor committing a grave fault. Just as when adog barks a lot, it cools down when youpamper it, similarly when these humans bark, they cool down when we pamper them. Whena person is very angry then only he will dosuch a thing, no? He does such a thing out ofmisery, does he not? Will any person do anger-pride-deceit-greed kashaya with anybody if

he is happy? Will a happy person do kashayawith other person? But when one is in painand misery he does kashaya with other personso I would calm him down and then again Iwould make him break his viradhana (toactively negate and become averse to anotherhuman being). This is because he has not doneviradhana with understanding, he has doneso due to lack of understanding.

All these faults have happened due tolack of understanding only. The human beingsof the current times are such that they havenot done a single fault through understanding;indeed they are the best of the humans. Onlythe understanding (samajan) is scarce. And inold times people used to commit faults throughunderstanding. Their ego was like, ‘I know, Iunderstand that you are Mahavira. You arethe Lord of entire universe, I know that too.Go ahead and do what you can to defeat me!’Such human beings used to be there whocommitted faults deliberately withunderstanding. They are called unusual humanbeings. Is it a task of a little child to commitsuch a big fault with such a great One? No.So then, such a person will go straight to theseventh hell from here. From there he will goto the celestial world and then he will comehere and attain the religion of vitarags and goto moksha. This is because he fought withvitarags, didn’t he? The Lord had said that ifyou want to fight then fight with a vitarag butdo not swear bad words. If you wish to fight, then fight with a vitarag. Fight really good, beat each other too, then you will bind accountwith them. However do not fight with thesepeople at all. If you will fight with an Americanthen you will have to go back there again. Youwill have to marry a Mary and if Mary divorcesyou, then what will be your condition? So thisis how all this! One cannot understand these

DADAVANI

drifting trends of karma and where it will leadone to, in the various realms of existence.

Loss is one’s own only, through thecrazy ego

This crazy ego will destroy him; it willcause a lot of damage to his own self only. And the poor people at home suffer a lot fromthe disturbance. That’s why the women usedto say that, ‘We are the wise ones from otherfamilies and that’s why the households arerunning well.’ Mother (Zaverba, Dadashri’smother) used to say this.

What all the women are saying is that allthe men are crazy and women are wise andthat is why the homes are running well, theywere saying this. Crazy ego. You havetremendous wealth within and there is extremeegoism, and this egoism has created anunnatural state. When my ego dissolved Irealized what craziness used to be there!

That hidden ego identified

My brother Manibhai was like a lion, ifhe walked out, a hundred people will scatteraround from fear; scatter around after lookingat his eyes. In those days how much powerwas there? I too, used to fear him. Such powerhe had! A man with tremendous power! Agrand sight to behold! All his mannerisms weregrand! Now tell me, will there be power inthis mind? Won’t it be intoxicated with power? Thus, my older brother was very egoistic.Outsiders used to say that he is egoistic andused to call me as the wise one. But what myolder brother used to tell me? ‘I haven’t seenan egoistic person like you in the entireGujarat.’ So I asked him, ‘For what reasonare you calling me egoistic? Where do yousee the egoism in me?’ Then he said, ‘Youregoism is a disguised egoism. I have

understood it well.’ Yes, there was a deepknot of egoism within me! He used to tell mebut I was unable to believe it. I said, ‘He isthe one with egoism.’ Then I searched and Irealized that there was a very huge ego. Ilearned about this deep tuber of ego later on;after he passed away. When the tuber of myego sprouted, I realized that, O ho ho!Manibhai was telling the truth! Then the egoismstarted to bite a lot. This bite I could nottolerate. How can it be tolerated? Later on,that tuber of ego went away too!

There is no telling when the ego will gocrazy

If you ‘saw’ it wrong, you will get the‘wrong’ punishment. The loss that you face isproportionate to the profit you made. So thisworld isn’t completely wrong! And if someoneknows how to collect and extract profit, hecan remain in shubha beneficial and helpfuldhyan meditation. But even then, he can’tcollect the total profit. Man cannot avoid theashubha harmful and inauspicious. Therefore, when one attains the shuddha pure state thenonly everything can get cleared. Otherwise, clearance won’t happen until then. This isbecause it can’t be predicted when the egowill start acting crazy at anytime. It is absorbedin intoxication madamast, filled with ego of‘I-ness’ mada and that very form of egoismcan’t be predicted when it will go totally crazyand haywire. If someone instigates even a bit,it can act crazy in any manner. And if a kingis instigated, he will say, ‘Burn them all rightnow.’ And at that moment he doesn’t realizewhat the result of this act will be. The natureof the ego is that it will use up all that is in itspower and influence.

What will a brother by birth, decidewithin? He will make a firm opinion that, ‘this

Page 14: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 13

DADAVANI

brother of mine is the type who will straightenout only when for once and all he is destroyedflat out.’ Even the brother by birth begins toget ready to hurt the one who is the unyieldingegoistic! The son-in-laws will mindfully awaitthinking that he is exercising his egoism nowbut one day we will put him in place. They willgo on digging from all four sides; dig and cutdown the tree so it will fall down on the ground! They won’t leave him alone.

If you throw your ego weight around alot, your brothers will say, ‘It will be good ifhe gets the run around, he will get straightenedout. Otherwise, he is not going to straightenout.’ So, what do the brothers say about theone with very heavy ego? They have this innerintent of making their brother with the egosuffer a heavy fall. This egoism has such badqualities that not only the brothers will say thisbut even the wife will think in her mind that hehas gone up too high, ‘Oh God, give him sucha push that he will straighten out.’ Now tellme, what quality of egoism is this that onecan’t get along with the members of ownfamily. No one likes such crazy ego. If it issomewhat proper, somewhat normal, it maybe useful! And what is there that necessitatessuch egoism? You don’t have thekingdom….oh, even the comfort of showeringin the bathroom may not be there, and youare doing egoism here unnecessarily!

If there are fifty people in this big room;they won’t but clash. This is because theegoism won’t but burst! The one with the shortfuse will be the first one to burst. And look;here there is no crazy ego; therefore even ifsomeone has kicked him, nothing affects him!

Your talk may be right but if it is notunderstood, then it will give rise to clash. If itis understood, there cannot be any clash! And

within all this, one’s egoism is in operation.Everyone’s egoism is different, is it not?

Straightforward ego will arise within aperson who is straightforward. Obstinate egowill arise in the obstinate one. Ego is of onlyone nature, but its colors appear in manydifferent shades.

This world would not have been so mad,if such ego was absent. All the pain dukhaexist due to the ego. There is no harm incontinuing to do the work, but egoism createsunnecessary storms.

Worthless crazy ego of pride

I am talking about the times before theenlightenment-Gnan. At that time, my ‘brain-intellect’ used to work well. I had a system-habit of giving advice to people. That meantbeing quite free and easy to give advice toothers, and people used to feed my pride, andI used to eat that too! They would come andtell me, ‘this troublesome thing has happenedto me, and I am in that trouble etc,’ and so Iused to tell them how to use a loophole andget out through a back-door. I used to givewrong advice to people. I would show peoplethe way to escape from their income taxcrimes; I would give them advice and makethem free. But that was equivalent to help themleave from the ‘back-door’. I understood thislater that I had helped them leave from theback-door. I misused my intellect and helpedpeople to escape from back-door and I hadshown them how to become free from incometax. I had asked them to leave from back-door. What benefit I got from this? They giveme respect (maan). I was hungry for therespect. I was not only hungry for respect(maan) but I was a beggar. Just as a beggarkeeps asking for alms, similarly I would beg

Page 15: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

14 March 2010

DADAVANI

for respect!

Yes, many such mistakes had happened!Did we have a law office? Lawyers do whatthey do for money; I used to do that to feedthe hunger for respect. It is all one and thesame, isn’t it? Everything is lawyering only, isn’t it? If one person is beating the otherperson, in this if we try to explain to the onewho is beating and turn him around, this isconsidered saving the other person. This waythis person will not lose and that person willnot lose, this way they will be free. If we takefees from this person and if we do not takefees from other person, then is it consideredsaving anyone?

And whoever came asking for help, evenif a thief came asking for help then I had helpedthe thief too. He would say, ‘Yes Dada, yougot my work done’, he would say that. Onlythis much was the hunger of the hungry onewithin for the respect.

Questioner: Respect (maan)!

Dadashri: If someone were to satisfythis much hunger of the ego then all his workis done. I would take all the responsibility. Hewould know that I am like a God. He wouldunderstand that I had done all this for hisunhappiness. I was not doing anything for myself.

One should have at least this much ego.Otherwise nobody would do anything good atall. And I too had the ego, that is why I wasdoing. Very heavy ego.

If someone addresses me as Ambalalbhaiand next day he addresses me as Ambalal, then I would not be able to sleep the wholenight. I had all that kind of ego. Crazy ego;worthless ego. That wealth of the worthless

ego never had fallen short.

The wounds of the crazy ego throughspeech

Egoism eats up all the energies (shakti)and that gives you the beatings in life. As ahuman being, if one does not interfere in thepresent flow of life, it would run very smoothly. However, unfortunately one does nothing butinterfere constantly from moment he wakesup. If one does not interfere in the slightest inthe present circumstance then one will havethe energy and reign of God. Instead oneinterferes and gives rise to one’s own reign.Thereafter, ‘Why did you do this way?’ ‘Thisis like this…’ Hey mooah (the one who isdying by the second)! Why don’t you die withease? (Whatever you do, you are dying, sowhy not take it easy?) Why not wash yourface and drink a nice cup of tea quietly?

The wife who is woken up from hernap, complains, ‘You don’t even rock thebaby. He has been crying for so long.’ Thehusband will retaliate, ‘Did I have to rockhim when he was in your belly? Now that heis out, you have to keep him.’ Now tell me,what is this woman likely to do if she is notsubmissive?

That which interferes is the craziness ofthe ego

Questioner: When you say that oneshould not interfere, does that mean that onehas to leave everything haphazard as it is inthe home, even when there are many peoplein the household?

Dadashri: You should neither leavethings as they are nor should you interfere.

Questioner: How would that bepossible?

Page 16: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 15

DADAVANI

Dadashri: How can you interfere?Interference is called the craziness of the ego.

Questioner: If work needs to be donein the home, can we tell him to do it?

Dadashri: Yes, but there are ways ofsaying it.

Questioner: You mean we should notbecome emotional when we say it?

Dadashri: At other times, do you notspeak sweetly to him that even before you arefinished he understands?

Questioner: What should I do aboutthe strong and abrasive speech?

Dadashri: Harsh language in itself isinterference! If your speech is harsh then youhave to use additional words like, ‘I requestyou…,’ or ‘I am asking you to please do thismuch.’ All you have to do is use such wordsbefore you proceed.

Questioner: When we say, for example,‘Hey, take this plate from here,’ …the forcebehind the way we say it…

Dadashri: When you say it withauthority, that is when you are interfering.

Questioner: So we must speak in alow volume voice.

Dadashri: It would be fine to speak ina low volume voice and tone, but some peoplewill still create interference even if they use agentle tone. Instead you should say, ‘I amrequesting you to please do this much for me!’Include a few extra words.

Egoism is a chronic disease

What happens to you if someone swearsbad words at you?

Questioner: If the ego gets hurt, I willfeel it, no?

Dadashri: Ego gets hurt? If ego getshurt, that would be good; it will get lessened. As it gets hurt and hurt again, will it not getexhausted? Do you want to keep the egofresh? Fresh? Do you have much need for theego?

Questioner: It stays with us all the time,no?

Dadashri: Yes, it stays near and near.It doesn’t move away anywhere else! All thisis because of it.

There was one man who had a Frenchcut hairstyle. He used to keep his hair thisway up to here. Once, the haircutting salonperson cut it a little more, so he got angry andgave him two-four slaps! ‘Hey, if it was cut alittle more, what damage did it cause?’ Butlook what the ego does! Do you have such anego? Does it create storms? Is it wise?Someone has wise ego and someone has crazyego! They are encamped on the basement ofegoism. They call people as ‘senseless’. As ifhe is a sack of sense! Such a person willtotally lose it and a person can become like astone (crass)! No one should be calledsenseless; there is the Self in him. Therefore, how much liability is there, if one is not awareof this?

This egoism is called a chronic disease. One can recover from it if one stays with Me,otherwise, people would make this diseaseeven more chronic and worse.

‘I am the only one that has any sense’– that is also craziness

If someone says, ‘You have no sense’,does it have an effect on you?

Page 17: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

16 March 2010

DADAVANI

Questioner: Of course, it will haveeffect.

Dadashri: Why? Are you a sack ofsense?

Questioner: I am not, therefore thereis effect.

Dadashri: And if someone asks, ‘Youare a collector of which district?’ Do you thensay that I am a collector?

Questioner: I am not a collector sohow can I say?

Dadashri: Here, about the collector, you have no effect; and why is there effectover there (no sense)? You have believed insidethat I am somebody, with sense.

Questioner: The ego gets woundedthere.

Dadashri: The ego within who holds,‘I have some sense’ gets wounded. If he goesto sell this sack of sense in the market, hewon’t get even four annas (one quarter). Thisis because everyone is a sack of sense! Whowill buy? If someone says something offensiveto you, immediately the sense, ‘I amsomething’, will arise. The belief is there that,‘I am the one with some sense’ from thebeginning. What do you say? Does your egobelieve something like that?

Questioner: Yes, correct. Right fromthe beginning I believe that I am the one withintellect, that’s how I am. How can anyone tellme off about anything!

Dadashri: This happens on certain daysonly, no?

Questioner: When I had not takenDada’s Gnan, I had this belief that no one can

tell me anything; my ego was like that. But,now I adjust everywhere.

Dadashri: Does the feeling, ‘I amclever’ remain?

Questioner: Yes, it does.

Dadashri: That is the biggest of alldiseases.

Questioner: But now that belief is notthere at all.

Dadashri: Nevertheless, do you believeit occasionally?

Questioner: The belief that, ‘I amclever’ is never there but I was careful aboutsomeone telling me off about something.

Dadashri: Wasn’t there something like‘Not getting under pressure from anybody’?

Questioner: Yes, that was there.

Dadashri: The fact that, ‘I amsomething’ was there, is itself a disease. Andthe clashes happen because of this diseaseonly. This disease does not leave even afterGnan is taken. Therefore, if this disease is stillthere, it should be eradicated. Otherwise evenafter getting this Gnan this disease will be there.Later on, if we tell ‘him’, he will understandand will get rid of this disease slowly. But if hewere not told, the disease will linger on in him. This disease should be ousted.

Signs of ‘I am something’

Questioner: What are the signs of this‘I am something’ disease?

Dadashri: It has all too many signs, allthe signs as in an ignorant person. He doeswhat he wants (dharyoo karvoo), and doessuch and such, when respect is given he feels

Page 18: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 17

DADAVANI

delighted. Most of them are diseases of thesetypes; they have many signs. If he doesn’t feelbitter when respect is given; he won’t be ableto remain in Gnan. A man with Gnan will gettired when he is given respect; tired as to whomthis respect is being given to? Respect is beinggiven to Chandulal, what to do aboutChandulal? Therefore, one should be verycareful about this disease.

‘I understand’ – that is also craziness

If a senior person is there even then theego says, ‘You don’t understand, you don’thave sense.’ Here comes the one who wantsto measure his intelligence! How can anyonespeak like that? Then there will be clashesonly, no? But one should not speak such hurtfulworlds like, ‘You do not have sense.’ Anordinary person will take on the responsibilityby speaking such thing because of lack ofunderstanding. But the one who hasunderstanding will not take on such aresponsibility. When the other person speaksnegative then he will speak positive. Otherperson may ask anything because of lack ofunderstanding but you cannot speak negativeor wrong, because you are responsible forthat.

‘You don’t understand’, you cannotspeak like that too. You can say that, ‘Brother,at least think! You think at least a little.’ If yousay, ‘No one has any sense,’ does it mean allare stupid? Do people speak like this or not?

Questioner: They do. This intellectualpeople speak in this way only that, ‘This persondoes not have understanding.’

Dadashri: Yes, people would speak likethat, ‘You will not understand’, to say suchthing is the biggest gnanavaran that whichveils the knowledge of the Self, karma. You

cannot say that, ‘You will not understand’, butyou should say, ‘I will explain to you’. If yousay that, ‘You won’t understand’, then it willwound the heart of the opposite person.

The ego (ahamkar) is such a thing. Whatdoes a volt power of four hundred volts tellyou? ‘Do Not Touch, Danger’. Similarly, egois a dangerous thing. It is like four hundredvolts. Do not play with it, do not touch it; donot harass it. What will be the result of irritatingit?

Questioner: Clash, clash, clash!

Dadashri: Clash! And it will bite youlike a snake. Just like a snake hisses and bites,no? Humans will bite in a different way, butbite they will!

‘I will see to that’ is crazy ego

Questioner: As an example, I have apending file with the income tax. Now, theincome tax officer does not have thisknowledge, so he is egoistic. Now, as a resultof such ego, can he harm me?

Dadashri: No, he can’t harm you ifyou don’t answer him with your ego.

Questioner: I don’t even go to him. There is no need for me to go to him but thisis a routine recurring file.

Dadashri: That is not a problem.

Questioner: But if he is an egoisticofficer, can he not hurt me?

Dadashri: He doesn’t have the powerto defecate, what can he do to you then? Hecan do something to you when you say that Iwill take care of such officers, I will take themon, and take them to task.

Questioner: No one will do such a

Page 19: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

18 March 2010

DADAVANI

thing.

Dadashri: Yes, if you are natural andhumble, then nothing will happen to you. Ifyou are not pushing him around, thenvyavasthit (scientific circumstantial evidence)will not change. That poor man has noindependent energy at all!

One cannot speak ‘Who has thecapacity and the energy?’

Questioner: On one hand you aresaying that he has no energy to defecate andon the other hand you are saying that he hasego.

Dadashri: If you push him around, hehas the energy to retaliate. So you should notthrow the words around. In the past I used todo so much insulting, because of egoism I usedto say that no one is capable of doing anythingin the world, who has the power? Now, Ihave stopped saying such words! Whathappens when one says this? It will offendsome celestial deity’s mind that, ‘Oh, he istalking about power, now I will show him off.’He will say this. It is the same as irritating theothers. One shouldn’t say such things.

Questioner: So then, no interference inmy scientific circumstantial evidences happens, unless I irritate him?

Dadashri: No, if you don’t do anythingto the ego of the other person, no one willinterfere with you. What concern do you havewith the ego of anyone else?

Nevertheless, I used to say this a lot.Oh, I was in so much ignorance that I used tosay, ‘Who has the power? There is no powerin the world that can do anything!’ But later itwas realized that if the deities hear this theywill feel, ‘What this stupid person is mouthing

off?’ this is all egoism. Wherever you see, inthe celestial world too, there is egoism.Everywhere, life is there because of egoism, and the one with the heavy ego will not butbecome more egoistic upon hearing suchwords. Therefore, one shouldn’t say anything.Remain humble; if you remain in humility, noone will bother you.

‘I did’ and ‘I will do it’ – that is alsocrazy ego

There was a mendicant who was saying,‘It will happen if I do it, no?’ I said, ‘Whydon’t you do it then?’ He then said, ‘It is myintention, I will do it.’ ‘Do it then!’ ‘For infinitelife times, so many chovisies (Succession oftwenty-four Tirthankaras in one era of Time-cycle) have passed and you are still wanderingaround here, and if you are the doer, whydon’t you get it done? Hey, you don’t havethe power to defecate, what is it that you aregoing to do? Why are you doing egoismunnecessarily?’

Everything that he is speaking is knownas egoism. ‘I did something and I will do it’ –to say this is known as double egoism.

Crazy ego creates obstructions

Every spoken word carries danger, soremain silent if you do not know how to sayit. Especially in matters of religion, it is verydangerous. That other danger in worldlymatters may vanish with ease.

Obstructions to Gnan (knowledge) anddarshan (vision) results when one misspeaksin matters of religion and, ‘You do notunderstand anything here, and I only have thecorrect understanding.’ Or if someone is beingimpeded in his attempts to attain Atmagnan, then these obstructions will be created for the

Page 20: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 19

DADAVANI

one who creates the obstructions. If someonesays, ‘The Gnani Purush has come, let us gosee Him.’ And at this time if you say, ‘huh, Ihave seen many such Gnanis, do not wastemy time.’ This is the obstruction for you. Nowhuman beings have the habit of sayingsomething or the other. If on the other hand, you have the deep desire to meet a Gnani butyour circumstances are such that you cannotgo, then your obstruction is broken. The creatorof the obstruction is doing so withoutunderstanding that he is causing the obstruction.

Some say, ‘Such Akram Gnan, how canit ever be? How can one attain moksha inone hour?’ Such talk immediately creates anobstruction. One can never say what will nothappen in this world. So this world is not suchthat it can be measured by the intellect. Thisis because what has happened, this AkramVignan, is indeed a fact. Very specificobstructions have fallen for Self-realization.This is the final station on the path of liberation.

The one whose obstructions for meetingan indirect (paroksha) source of liberation arebroken continues to have obstructions for thedirect (pratyaksha). And therefore suchpersons will only meet the indirect. And thereare very many obstructions for meeting thedirect source of liberation. Breaking of theseobstructions to the direct source results in thework of infinite life times being done directly.

Protection of the Ego

Questioner: You said that speechcomes out through the ego.

Dadashri: It is like this, there is nothingwrong with speaking; speech is a code word.It gets expressed and the sounds come out,but you should not protect or defend (rakshan)speech.

Questioner: Does ‘not protectingspeech’ mean that one should not feel, ‘I amright in what I said?’

Dadashri: ‘I am right’ is the protection(rakshan). There is nothing wrong if there isno protection. It will not hurt anyone. Whenyou protect your ego, then it hurts the otherperson.

A little child will not feel hurt even if Iwere to spank him a lot, but if you were tomerely tap him in anger it will make him cryprofusely. Therefore, the child does not getupset because of physical pain but becausehis ego is hurt.

The scripture writers have said that theego is such an attribute that it makes everyonecompletely blind. It creates enmity even amongbrothers. It will make one think and wish forfinancial ruin of his own brother; even a fatherwill wish that his son be reduced to nothing. What damage can the ego not do? Therefore, one should recognize and understand, ‘Whatis the significance of this ego within, as far asmy welfare is concerned?’

Questioner: But do we not need theego to do our work?

Dadashri: The ego to do the work isalways there. Who says no to that ego? Butyou should recognize and have theunderstanding of the ego that has caused somuch havoc and thereafter you will have noattraction or love for it.

Crazy ego shoots up against ego

Questioner: What should I do whenthe other person does not improve, no matterhow hard I try?

Dadashri: One has not improved

Page 21: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

20 March 2010

DADAVANI

himself and he tries to improve others – insteadit only leads to the other person becomingspoiled even more. The moment one tries toimprove the other person, the other personbecomes worse. What happens when the onetrying to improve others is spoiled himself? The easiest thing is to improve the self. If youhaven’t improved yourself and you try toimprove others, then it is meaningless. Untilyou improve your ‘self,’ your words will fallon deaf ears and bounce back; if you say,‘Don’t do it like this,’ then the other personwill say, ‘Go away. I will do it exactly likethat!’ You have just made him worse!

There is no need of ego in this at all. Ifyou try to get your work done through egoand intimidation, the other person will get evenmore aggravated. People will always be sincereto the one who does not have an ego; thereis morality with such a one.

We should not have ego; it hurtseveryone. Even a small child will becomeobstinate if you call him ‘stupid’ or ‘senseless’or ‘an idiot’! But if you tell him, ‘Son, you area very good boy,’ he will immediately do whatyou ask of him.

The moment you recognize that ‘ego isharmful,’ everything will becomestraightforward. It is not worth protecting theego; the ego itself is such that it will naturallyprotect itself.

Protection of one’s own self is crazy ego

It is a grave mistake to protect anythingin the front of the Gnani Purush. Protectingone’s self is considered the craziest intellect.Gnani Purush, who does not have anyattachment or abhorrence (raag-dwesh), areyou trying to show that you are correct toHim?

Questioner: I do not answer and whenI do, you become angry.

Dadashri: You are the only one whosaw anger in Gnani Purush. No one has everseen it. How utterly foolish is that! Gnani Purushdoes not have any anger. What kind of eyesdo you have? Gnani Purush’s words arestrong, how can He have any anger? Onecannot be called a Gnani if there is anger inhim. One who has anger, he is called an animal. You did not even recognize whether this isanger or what? It is a crime to protect one’sself. That is considered swachhand self guidedundertaking; it is considered over-wiseness. Ifswachhand remains after attaining Gnan, thenthat is considered a grave misery. If one cansee anger in a Gnani Purush, it is the end ofit, is it not? You have become (khengar)useless; you have become a sack full ofintellect! Now understand that and become aShuddhatma. One is considered a fool if hetries to have it both ways.

When is it considered sense? It is whenthe line ahead keeps clearing and there isconstantly a smile on one’s face. These arecalled ‘sack full of intelligence’. Their line isnot clear and on the contrary they createentanglements wherever they go.

Craziness of intellect – over-wiseness

Questioner: This intellect createsentanglements, what is that?

Dadashri: Entanglements is over-wiseness. Over-wiseness means that one triesto do everything according to his own wisdom. He continues to use his wisdom in everything. He will do what a Gnani Purush tells him, buthe will still use his own wisdom. Such as, if hehas been told to take the medicine at 3:00, hewill think, what difference it makes if he takes

Page 22: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 21

DADAVANI

it at 3:15? He will not cease to use his ownwisdom. And that is the cause of all theentanglements. Worldly life exists because ofintellect. If intellect acts crazy then you shouldsay, ‘I will drop you somewhere far away.’

What does intellect make you do?

It makes you do swachhand (be guidedby one’s own will and decisions). It will makeyou do swachhand even if you are always inthe company of Lord Mahavira. It will say,‘Lord may say that but….’ This is what yourintellect will make you do.

Once one of mahatma had scolded hisintellect, ‘Who do you think you are? I canunderstand all this. Are you trying to make afool of me? Are you arguing against His words, when His words are the ultimate words? Canyou not remain straight there?’ Intellect willmake you argue with your wife or yourchildren; but why here? Intellect will not letyou sit in peace.

Scolding is a crazy ego

What is this tongue and this speech thatcreates and destroys and destroys and creates? It is the ego of the previous life. It is becauseof this ego that the tongue lashes out ruthlesslyand creates vibrations, causing conflicts. Mostof the miseries today are because of vibrationscaused by the tongue and the speech.

At certain times, do you not speakpleasantly? You do so when you speak withyour boss or your superiors. But you use harshlanguage with those who work under you. Youcriticize and scold them all day long. Your entirespeech becomes ruined because there is egobehind it. There is nothing in this world worthsaying. Whatever we say, is ego. The entireworld is with an internal regulator.

Rebuke and scolding leads a person toavoid telling the truth and resort to deceit.Deceit arises in the world because of the fearof reprimand and rebuke. Reprimanding othersis the highest ego; it is a crazy ego. Censuringis only useful when it is not coupled withprejudice.

The laws of karma are such that if youscold your servant, your child or your wife foran hour, in your next life they will return asyour husband or your mother-in-law and dothe same to you. Surely we need justice? Youwill have to suffer the same thing. If you hurtanyone, you will have suffering throughout yourlife. Even if you hurt someone for just an hour, you will have to experience a lifetime worth ofsuffering.

‘I am verily in control’ – is crazy ego

As much as possible, it is worth doingfor the Self. And there is nothing that we canchange in this worldly life. In worldly life ‘You-the Self’ should tell ‘Chandubhai’ that, ‘Keepon doing work. Even if something changesafterwards do not scold, do not scold anyoneand keep on doing work.’ You should saythis. There is nothing to scold or fight in theworldly life at all. The one who has a diseasewill keep on scolding and fighting. Do thesecows and buffalos fight everyday! At the mostonce in a while, otherwise they go togetherand come together. No bickering with eachother or no trouble. There is no talk aboutscolding at all. Scolding means it is verily anego, an overt ego. It is called a crazy ego. Hewill believe in his mind that, ‘They cannot dowithout me. All this will be ruined.’ That egois called a crazy ego. So one should stopwhere there is a talk about conflict and fighting.

You should not say even a word to

Page 23: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

22 March 2010

DADAVANI

anyone in this world. To do so is a majordisease. Each one of us have brought our ownaccounts from the past. What is the point ininterfering? Stop speaking even a one word. Ihave given you the knowledge of vyavasthitscientific circumstantial evidences for this veryreason. So without the knowledge ofvyavasthit, a person cannot refrain fromspeaking. Because when the tea cups arebroken through the hands of the servant themooah—the one dying by the second, themaster, will not refrain from shouting. Will he?He will yell at servant, ‘Why did you breakthem? Are your hands broken?’ But now afterGnan, the tea cups are broken, then who brokethem? The Gnan of vyavasthit is given, sonothing has to be said, no? And that whichhappened is vyavasthit only.

Therefore, you should stop speakingeven a word. To do so is a major disease, according to the Lord. Only Gnani can speak. How is the speech of a Gnani? The speech ofthe Gnani is dependent upon the wishes of theother person. The Gnani’s speech emanatespurely for the purpose of fulfilling the wishesof others. Otherwise why will he have tospeak? Gnani’s speech is syadvaad (speechthat hurts no one’s ego or viewpoint), peoplelike to listen.

And the moment one listens to that otherspeech, it disturbs the self, and shakes oneup, and this causes so much sin (paap). Youcannot speak even a word in this world. Tospeak even a little is called (kachkach)bickering.

If we ask out there that, ‘What youruncle was saying?’ Then he would say, ‘Thatuncle was bickering for no reason.’ Then what, are these all animals, mooah? You are sayingthat your uncle is bickering. Hey you stupid!

Why do you keep babbling? There is nothingworth speaking. Yes, what kind of speechwould be of the speaker? The speech shouldbe such that one would love to listen, ‘whatdid you say, uncle? What did you say uncle?’And here, one will fight before even one speaks. One will say, ‘You leave alone your bickering, you keep creating interference unnecessarily.’

Only one thing is required to do in thisworld. No one should speak anything.Whatever is there, eat it quietly and go doyour own work, you should keep doing yourwork. Do not speak or do such a thing.

Questioner: But Dada, when I saysomething with anger to children or wife, itfeels like I am acting in a play…

Dadashri: Yes. There is no problem ifyou keep intent that it is transient and like aplay. If other person is fighting then it is notworth for you fighting with him. If he thinksyou are stupid then you should know so. Doeshe have a law in his hand for anyone going tomoksha? You should take the certificate fromDada, and check how His certificate is, that’sall.

When does the ego become alive?

Questioner: If someone tells me thatyou are like this and like that, that I am crazy, then I should not defend, should not protect.I should say that I have been like this from thebeginning. If I took a side uparanu or didprotection rakshan then nirjeev lifeless ego, will become sajeev living ego, is it true?

Dadashri: It does not become a livingego, but because you sided with it uparanumeans You will be forced into more dakhointerference—‘I am Chandulal.’ If you took aside, the whole night will pass in restlessness

Page 24: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 23

DADAVANI

due to interference. If he says, you are likethis, so be it, then it is over. If you try to doplus or minus then you will not get any solutionthe whole night. That is why you should say,‘I am indeed like what you are saying.’ If youtalk like that then the file will settle to someextent.

Questioner: What about the defeat Iaccepted in front of him? Like saying, I amwhat you say I am.

Dadashri: The one who accepts andadmits the defeat, what else is left for him todo? I have just shown you my way, the waythat I followed. The ego of ignorant state iscalled a live (sajeev) ego. After the realizationof the Self it becomes lifeless (nirjeev). If Yousided with lifeless ego that ‘I am not like this’,then it can become alive again. You have tobring closure of the lifeless ego, You do nothave to protect it.

And the moment one misses the fiveAgnas, the ego starts to become alive (sajeev). It will not take time, will it? For many peopleit has become sajeev alive again. You missedAgna, if you forsake the five Agnas theneverything becomes alive again. All those whohave given up, their ego is alive again. Thisego that has been given life takes its positionwhere it used to be in the past. If you do notabide by the five Agnas then kusang—company that takes one away from the Self, will eat you up. This kusang all around youwill eat up lifelessness (nirjeevta) of egoentirely.

‘It won’t work without me’ – is crazy ego

Questioner: Alive (sajeev) means whatkind of ego?

Dadashri: Alive (sajeev) means, ‘You

cannot do without me at all, I am verily thedoer. Who else can do? No one can do.’ Onedoes such egoism and that is living ego.

Questioner: Do you call it live egowhen this person feels like, ‘You cannot dowithout me’?

Dadashri: Such awareness that, ‘I amdoing’ during every action is verily live ego. Abarber simply has to make a decision that Iwant to shave this person, and it happens, butif he ever says that, ‘I am doing, no one exceptme can do it,’ then he would nick the customerand draw blood.

So if the work is done naturally thenone can get a hundred percent result and if heever tries to do something else then he can getforty percent result. So the result of naturalness(sahajata) is high. Ego is blind. It does not letyou complete your work successfully and apartfrom that it binds the next life.

Questioner: If I say that, ‘This cannotbe done without me’, so where am I gettingbound?

Dadashri: What is the necessity ofsaying, ‘You cannot do without me?’ Do thesegreat leaders say ‘what will happen of thisworld if we are not around’? Then the peoplewill say that, many people like you came andleft.

Questioner: If a person withcommonsense, does not exercise his ego bysaying, ‘You cannot do without me’ then whereis the question of binding karma in that?

Dadashri: Everywhere in the relativeworld it is the live ego. It is like this, what hesays in the home, ‘This household runs becauseof me, otherwise it is such that, if I am notaround then you would be in wretched

Page 25: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

24 March 2010

DADAVANI

condition.’ When he says like this then whathis wife will say, ‘look at this! Here comes theone claiming doership! This house runs becauseI am here, otherwise these girls would wander.’

There that driver will say, ‘I saved’. Andif we ask the one who was saved, he will say,‘It is just that I jumped high, that is I why I amalive. How he was going to save me?’ Thenthat policemen says, ‘It is because I was there, that is why you are saved.’ So all that iscraziness of ego.

All the responsibilities go on the headof an egoistic person

What does this king say? He says that,‘I killed hundreds of thousands of people.’The king is only doing the egoism; he is takingthe sweet juice of doership (garvaras).Actually, those who were in the war had killedthem. The king is taking on the liability withoutdoing anything! The killings are done by thosewarriors, yet the king says, ‘I killed.’ He sayssuch crazy stuff only. What kind of result dothose people who killed get? Because of this, the killer is acquitted. The rule is that the onewho is egoistic, the responsibility will go onto his head. If you say ‘I killed’- then, ‘takeit.’

Instead, he thinks that, ‘O ho ho! Myprestige went up in this world.’ Yes, the prestigedid go up on one hand, but it will bring resultand you will have to suffer it alone. The onewho does the egoism will get its result. Ithappens by itself; the result of karma madehim a king. But he does the egoism, ‘I did!’Then he will get the beating.

Crazy ego makes one worry

Questioner: You had said once insatsang that, ‘Worry is a sign of ego.’

Dadashri: Yes, why is worry known asa sign of ego? He feels in his mind that I ammaking it all work and for that reason heworries. I am the one making it work meaningwhat will happen to this daughter, what willhappen to this son, he says. What will happento this, how will it happen, what will happenif the house is not completed? He takes overthis worry on his head. He believes himself asthe doer. I am the owner, I am the only onedoing it; he believes this. He is not the doerand he unnecessarily takes on the worrying.

Worrying may be there because of senseof doership, but the doership intent is there inevery human being. Here, it is crazy egoism. To worry is crazy egoism. Everyone in theairplane may be enjoying a cup of tea or coffeeand this silly man goes on worrying as to whatwill happen if the plane falls down. Thenmooah, look at the people sipping tea andPepsi! Should this not be known? What kindof egoism is this called then? If you tell theother passenger that this man is getting thistype of thoughts; then he will say, ‘What kindof a person is he? Is he crazy?’ Therefore, there must be no worry at all.

‘I am something’ is craziness of ego

Questioner: Is there more pain andsuffering when you believe ‘I am something’.

Dadashri: Surely, you have to suffer it.One lets go of this belief, of ‘I-ness hoonpanu’upon suffering from the beating. Without suchbeating, it does not leave. One has toexperience the beating. Such experience isnecessary. Pratikraman does not help removethis ‘I am something type of I-ness.’

Questioner: How does one get rid ofthis sense of ‘I am so and so and I can do thisetc?’

Page 26: Let us identify the nature of the crazy ego

March 2010 25

DADAVANI

Dadashri: If one takes the beating thenonly it will, otherwise not.

Questioner: Having experienced abeating one can realize his mistake; but inreaction to the pain would he not go on awrong track?

Dadashri: One may really go off on awrong track. The possibility is unlikely forsomeone with our Gnan. Elsewhere this mayhappen. Our Gnan helps him look back anddiscover his mistakes even when he has goneastray.

Questioner: So later he has some innerburning effects and that is why he gets backon track?

Dadashri: Only such sensation tells himthe mistake has happened and therefore heturns around. This is because he has seen thedays without any such burning, and so themoment the burning discomfort arises, he turnsback. This is why people say, ‘Dada, afterhaving been initiated in your Gnan we cannotafford to venture elsewhere becauseotherwise the burning that arises isunbearable.’

Questioner: One’s interaction withpeople all around is such that if he carries aspecial talent, the ego gets nourished in thatcrowd and one gets accustomed to feedingthe hungry ego of pride within, becauseeveryone compliments and sweet talkswherever he goes. One feels good inside. Thecraziness of ego that ‘I am someone’ is buildingup. Is this not true?

Dadashri: That is the discharging—lifeless ego. There is no life left in this egoafter our Gnan.

Questioner: Isn’t it troubling even

though it is lifeless?

Dadashri: Being without life it does notgrow. Whatever is there will be resolved.

Questioner: But, can it not hurt andharm others?

Dadashri: Yes, it can hurt you as wellas the other person; although to a lesser degreeto both, since there is no life in it. One will notfall away from this Gnan. Actually your Gnanwould have reached its pinnacle if you keptthe discharge ego aside. Your ego has thistendency to interfere because of its belief that‘I am something’, ‘I am something.’ That muchof the ‘I-ness’ has not been removed. I amtrying to help you be rid of that ‘I-ness’ but itdoes not happen.

That ‘I-hoon’ has become sensitive thatis why all this interference—dakho happens. Isaid, ‘Hey! It is not there in anything! I am notin anything either, so where have you comefrom?’ Even then that ‘I-hoon’ does not leavefor you. Otherwise this Gnan is such that itcan manifest and shine gloriously. What for doyou need this ‘I-hoon’? It has to be removed. So let me give you the understanding of mytechnique. It is not worth interfering dakho (Iam Chandulal) in anything.

Until that ‘I-hoon’ is completely pulledout with all its roots, there is no telling whenit will grow all over again. When, under whatcircumstances, what may arise is unpredictable,so what is one to do? Ignorance has left. Nowone has to persist in digging out the ego. Andwhatever baggage there is; is of the ego. Thenecessary discharging ego is dramatic for sure. But within there is another that is surreptitiouslyentangling, and that is not easily known.
