Goodreads review: … “The Last Watchman of Old Cairo” is a moving page-turner of a novel by Michael David Lukas. This tightly woven multigenerational tale illuminates the tensions that have torn communities apart and the unlikely forces – potent magic, forbidden love – that boldly attempt to bridge that divide … Joseph is the son of a Jewish mother and a Muslim father, who is pulled into a mesmerizing adventure to uncover the tangled history that binds the two sides of his family. For generations, the men of the al-Raqb family served as watchmen of the Ibn Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo. Joseph learns of his ancestor, a Muslim orphan who a thousand years earlier served as the first watchman of the synagogue …”
LIFE & LEGACY SOCIETY RECAP
The AJ Life & Legacy Society held its inaugural event on November 22nd following AJ’s Kabbalat Shabbat service. Sixty people enjoyed a reception catered by Executive Chef Maureen Hartmann, who worked her magic preparing a delectable assortment of heavy hors d’oeuvres.
Opening remarks were delivered by Sidney Hymson, AJ Life & Legacy Committee Co-Chair. Jennifer Tuvlin, Federation Life & Legacy Coordinator addressed the gathering and presented a progress report. Rabbi Sarah Tasman, founder of the Tasman Center for Jewish Creativity, gave a meaningful talk entitled “Bless the Work of Our Hands: Building a Sacred Community.” Her message very accurately described the purpose of the Life & Legacy program. Life & Legacy Co-Chairs Sidney Hymson and Frankye Gordon planned this festive event.
If you have not yet joined the Life & Legacy Society, but would like to get more information, please contact Life & Legacy Chairman, Sidney Hymson at 609-4557 or email: [email protected].
AJ MEMBERS ARE THE BEST!
Recently, the tracks in the sliding ark doors in the Chapel were beginning to stick. Fortunately, Dr. Walter Olson was present at minyan, and was able to diagnose the problem. We are pleased to report that Dr. Olson performed minor surgery on
the door, and now it is good as new. He also adjusted and tightened the mechanism on the Sanctuary ark doors. Thank you, Dr. Olson, for the love and care that you show to our House of Worship!
AJ was recently notified that our cardiac defibrillator was out of warranty, and was being recalled. Quotes were obtained, and it was going to be very expensive for the shul to purchase a replacement unit. Drs. Armand & Marylee Rothschild learned of this need, and very generously donated a new defibrillator to the
synagogue. We are so grateful to the Rothschilds for the continued and frequent generosity that they bestow on Adath Jeshurun!
Over the past year, AJ has been regularly updating security around the building. One of those updates was the addition of iPad monitors in the Boardroom and Chapel, to enable those inside to see who is at the door prior to buzzing people inside. The synagogue owned one iPad, but was poised to purchase a second unit that was needed for the installation. At a Board
meeting, members were asked if anyone had an iPad they could donate. David Fuchs immediately raised his hand, and followed up with the donation of an iPad. Thank you, David, for stepping up so quickly, and enabling AJ to complete this project without spending additional funds!
KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE!
Several years ago, Adath Jeshurun members Phyllis & Michael Shaikun learned first-hand the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning. They were fortunate enough to live to tell about their near tragedy. Now
they would like to educate others about the importance of installing carbon monoxide monitoring devices. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, colorless lethal killer that can be detected by the proper placement of carbon monoxide detectors in the home. The Shaikuns have generously endowed the Phyllis & Michael Shaikun Tikkun Olam Fund to underwrite the cost of carbon monoxide detectors to help make them affordable for everyone. Carbon monoxide detectors are available in the synagogue office for $10.60 each, which includes sales tax. To obtain a carbon monoxide detector, stop by the synagogue office during business hours. Please bring exact change, a check payable to AJ, or a credit card.

“LEGAL HOLIDAY” MINYAN EXPLAINED
For many decades, Adath Jeshurun has modified the start time of morning minyan on the following six legal holidays each year: • New Year's Day • Memorial Day • Independence Day • Labor Day • Thanksgiving Day • Christmas Day
Statistics show that the majority of United States companies close on these six holidays. Since many people sleep a little later when they are not expected at work, AJ morning minyan on these six days begins a little later at 8:45 a.m., rather than the usual time of 7:15 a.m.
Statistics show that the majority of American companies DO NOT CLOSE on the following four federal holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Out of respect to the many minyan participants who work on these four holidays, morning minyan is held at the usual time of 7:15 a.m. This enables our working members to attend morning minyan, and still arrive at work on time. This information is always available on the AJ Website under the “Worship” information, and can also be found on the Messenger calendar for the specific month in which the holiday falls.
