Math Sort and graph flowers -

Use the flowers you

have (fake or printable)

and have kids sort them

by color (or another

way depending on the

kind you have). Discuss

the sorting rule and

count how many are in

each group. Make a

graph if you'd like.

Shape flowers - Use felt

shapes or printable

shapes to create flow-

ers. Talk with the kids

about the shapes

they’re using.

Plant the flowers game -

A dice game using pre-

tend (or real) flowers

and play dough.

Fingerprint flower book -

Print the book. Read each

page. Add the correct

number of petals with fin-

gerprints (use a washable

ink pad). Draw a stem and

leaves if desired. Can also

use dot stickers instead of

fingerprints.

Roll and graph - Print

the flower die, assem-

ble, and roll. Keep track

of the rolls on the corre-

sponding graph. See

which flower wins.

Flowers

LESSON ACTIVITIES - EXPLANATION

Science

Plant flower seeds -

Choose a few different

flower seeds. Plant them

and watch as they

grow. Keep observa-

tions in a science jour-

nal. This can be started

ahead of time if need-

ed. (TF)

Flower science and art -

Explore saturation and

colors while creating

coffee filter flowers.

Plant life cycle - Use the

life cycle printables to

order and discuss how

plants grow.

Flower senses explora-

tion - Walk through the

senses of sight, hearing,

smell, and touch in rela-

tion to real flowers.

What was observed? (TF)

Life cycle shared writing

- Write about how flow-

ers grow from seeds to

flower. Children can

illustrate the story.

Literacy

Picking ABC flowers -

Use fake flowers (or let-

ter printables on craft

sticks) for this activity.

Beginning letter flowers -

Assemble printable

flowers based on the

first sound in each pic-

ture.

Flower syllables - Say a

flower name. Clap to

count how many sylla-

bles are in the name.

Use the included printa-

ble flower cards or use

your own list of flowers.

Letter sorting - Sort flow-

er letters into two

groups - “in my name”

and “not in my name”.

Use other names or

ways of sorting the let-

ters if desired.

Name button flower -

Cut small flowers out of

felt (one for each letter

in child’s name). Snip a

hole in each one. Write

a letter on each flower.

Attach a button to a

piece of green ribbon.

Child threads the flow-

ers on in the correct or-

der. Use this post for ref-

erence.

Other Cupcake liner flowers -

Use cupcake liners and

buttons to create flower

art. (TF)

Pounded flower art -

Place white construc-

tion paper on a sturdy

surface. Place flower

petals and/or whole

flowers on the paper.

Cover with another

piece of white paper.

Use a mallet or hammer

to gently hit the paper

and pound the flowers.

Trip to a local nursery -

Visit a local nursery or

nearby garden to ob-

time to explore them

with the senses. Try this

color matching activity

while you’re there.

Flower garden play

dough - Flower fun with

play dough. (TF)

Flower snacks - Choose

a flower-inspired snack

or two to make. (TF)

(TF) - Toddler-friendly ideas that would work when home with children of different ages.

INDEPENDENT ACTIVITIES

These activities would work well as centers or work boxes during free play time. They’re

meant to allow children the chance to play, explore, and practice preschool skills on their

own. Children may still need some assistance at times, of course. They’re broken down by

subject area for reference. (TF) =Toddler-Friendly

Math

Number Cards - Match flowers

or sunflower seeds to flower

number cards.

Pompom Flowers - Cut out

stems from green construction

paper. Set out colorful pom-

poms, kid tweezers/tongs, and

a die. Roll the die and add the

correct number of pompoms

to create flowers.

Literacy

Letter Puzzles - Match upper-

case to lowercase letters.

Word Making - Use magnetic

letters, word tiles, or other let-

ter manipulatives to make the

flower words. Use the flower

sorting cards as a guide.

Science

Flower Observation - Set up an

observation table with pictures

of flowers at different stages in

the life cycle, as well as real

seeds, sprouts, and flower

plants. Let kids observe and

draw in science journals. (TF)

Sensory

Flower Play Dough Invitation -

Set out play dough, flower

cookie cutters, and craft ma-

terials. Children create their

own flowers. (TF)

Coffee and Flower Sensory Bin

- Fake or real flowers and cof-

fee beans make up this simple

sensory bin. (TF)

Block Play

Build a Garden - Use blocks to

build gardens. Add fake flow-

ers to be planted in the gar-

dens once they’re built. (TF)

LEGO Flowers - Use Lego or

Duplo blocks to create flowers.

Arts and Crafts

finger paints and pompoms,

along with paper. Children

can create their own flowers

using their fingerprints or pom-

poms. (TF)

3D Flowers - Place cardboard

tubes, paint, tape, tissue pa-

per, glue, and pipe cleaners

out. Children can make three-
