• Short, quick strokes of paint

• Use of grays and dark tones

• Wet paint applied to wet paint to mix colors easily

Cubism

Works done by Picasso and Braque captured a 3D view of an image. This was

revolutionary because all art that was considered traditional before cubism was

flat and 2D. This was a huge turning point in the history of art.

• Objects appear broken up into many pieces and then re-assembled in an abstract form

• Objects are depicted from multiple view points

• American post World War II art movement

• Known as rebellious• First specifically

American movement to achieve international influence

A Rebel Style

Abstract expressionism was known as rebellious because it’s

techniques and general style went against the specific art movement of the time; mainly European art. American abstract expressionists

experimented with color and shape to go against the particular European style of the time.

• Emotional intensity

• Influential American painter• Most well known for his abstract

expressionist paintings which are also known as “action paintings”

• Unique style of “drip painting”

Action Paintings

Action painting was a way critics described Pollock’s work because he

put all his energy and life into his works. He would literally throw or drip his paint onto the canvas. The

paintings turned into an action of the body conveying a second of action

and motion.
