1 means to “rebuke harshly”--a figurative extension of “striking at”

The word for “rebuke” in verse 20 is a different Greek word that means “to expose, convict, correct”

“Widow” means “having a deficiency.”

Widows are to be fully supported by the church only if they meet need, age, marital, and behavioral/reputation standards.

Older men who rule are to be given special honor, but not exempted from correction.

The church should make careful examination of those given special visibility in the church in order to identify both good and bad qualities and reputations.
