NATIONALISM IN GERMANY

Lesson 3.8

Knight’s Charge What is urbanization? What were conditions like in factories during

the Industrial Revolution? Be Specific? What group of people suffered from

workplace accidents more than any other? Explain Laissez-Faire economics. What do you think Nationalism means? If Mr. Sliwa could meet any famous person

(dead or alive) who would it be?

Weird Disney Fact of the Day!

Walt Disney was paid by the Third Reich to make a cartoon (prior to WWII) about German Nationalism.

Little did he know….

Nationalism Nationalism: Noun. 1. Patriotic

feeling, principles, or efforts. 2. An extreme form of patriotism marked by a feeling of

superiority over other countries.

For this unit, Nationalism means…Strong feelings of pride towards ones culture, country, or identity.

Later on, we will use definition #2 above to describe Germany.

Nationalism

How can Nationalism be a good thing?

How can Nationalism be a bad thing?

The differences between a “Nation” and a “State.”

Nation: A large group of people, united by common ancestors, history, culture, or language, inhabiting a particular territory. (The PEOPLE make a nation)

State: A territory considered as an organized political community under one government. (Boundaries, Government, and Organization make a state)

Nationalism CREATES Germany!

In the early 1800’s, German speaking people lived in a number of different informal “states.”

The most important of which included Austria and Prussia.

No, not Russia….Prussia!!!

Flashback

So this total bro named Napoleon invaded Austria and Prussia in 1806.

He wanted to create a unified , European “state” (empire) with French Culture at its heart (Nationalism).

Well, that does not turn out well (sad Napoleon is back)

Nationalism Creates Germany Germans however, saw themselves as

“different” from the French in heritage, culture, etc.

German speaking people began to demand a “Unified German State.”

They wanted their own state and country because they all spoke the same language (not French).

Congress of Vienna The Congress of Vienna

discussed creating a new Unified German State.

However, the problem was that in order for this to happen, every one of the German “states” (Austria, Prussia) would have to dismantle their entire government and build a new one.

Not gonna happen…

Bismark Unites Germany

Otto Von Bismark –Becomes “Chancellor” and unites the German States with “Prussia” at the head.

He was a very strong leader and had the ability to command multiple states.

How?

Bismark Unites Germany

“Blut Eisen” (Blood and Iron) – Order through ruling with power and strength

“Real Politik” – Realistic politics based on the current needs of the area.

Strengthened and built up the army Helped elect Wilhelm I as the King of

Prussia (KAISER).

Steps of Aggressive Nationalism

What would be the steps you would take to create your own “state?”

Step One:Can You do it alone?Nah Bruh. You need allies to help you.Get some allies!

Steps of Aggressive Nationalism

Step Two:You must find land and territory for

your state. What do you do bruh?Yeah…squad up and go fight some

people to get more land.

Steps of Aggressive Nationalism

Step Three:What about after your state is created

dawg? You must organize politics, government, and

unification.Wait…how do I “high school up”

organization?Do you guys even know what that is?Nah Bruh…

Annexation

Prussia (not Russia) attempted to expand and Annex (take control of) other German states.

Primarily Austria and Denmark. So….How do you annex someone? Usually through force. So, Prussia declared war on Austria and

Denmark (lasted 7 weeks. Prussia won)

Oh wait, You thought this

land was yours?

Nah Son….

Annexation

I mean seriously, who just annexes someone else’s property?

#‘MERICA!

Oh….Bismark…. Prussia then started a war with France

because of trash talk. Bismark “edited” a document to encourage a

war between Germany and France. Both sides read the document (Germany

and France) and thought the other was trying to “slay” them.

Germany was all like, “oh no you didn’t.” France was like, “nah son…squad up.”

(starts removing earrings and pins from hair)

SQUADUP!!!

I know you ain’t talkin’ bout my squad!

Wow…we got detoured…

So, Wilhelm I took the title of “Kaiser” (or king) of all of the German States (Germany) after winning the war with France (1871)

Dat ‘Stache though…

Birth of The German Empire Established a new German based

government Dey U…Knighted? Under one

language, culture, credo, and pride!

UKNIGHTED!

Germany Gets Stronger

So how do you get stronger as a country without going to war?

Germany would build up its industry, making them very wealthy and a POWERHOUSE in Europe!

How Dey Do Dat? This was possible because Germany Had:

Found a way to make STEEL more efficiently (stronger and lighter than Iron)

Large amounts of coal and ironAn EDUCATED workforcePopulation GrowthBuilt RailroadsApplied science to economics (new chemicals,

etc)Created a single currency (Deutch Marks)$$$$

Germany Gets Swoll (Strong) Nationalism also attempts to unite people

under one religion. Bismark even attempted to get all religions

to swear allegiance to the government He developed laws that unified the people

and steered them away from socialism and communism.

Germany is now one of the strongest countries in Europe!
