UNICEF - GLOBALA charity that is helped by volunteers and gains money by fundraising and donations. A pressure group that helps improve government policy and practice on child rights.

1. Write a definition for a charity and a pressure group

2. Draw a mind map and name different ways you can

protest

Pressure groups - Insider and Outsider

Insider groups – have government and public support in most cases. Act legally. Work with ministers to achieve ends.

Outsider groups – try to block government policy, sometimes through illegal means. The group may not have that much government and public support.

Direct action - a hard-hitting type of protest that makes a big impact

Indirect action - uses subtle ways to protest for a cause

Oxfam is an NGO (non-governmental organisation) that is not-for-profit and works to promote human good, operating separately from the government.

Martin Niemoller - First they came for the communists,and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists,and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews,and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew.

Then they came for meand there was no one left to speak out for me.

Homework - find a quote that inspires you as to why we should bother to make a difference. Write a couple of sentences explaining why

you have chosen this quote.
