May Angeli is the author and artist of a great variety of books. Her work has been admired for some fifty years most particularly her skill in woodcuts. She has received many awards, including the Grand Prix de l’Illustration de Moulins in 2013. Her books are collected by many national libraries.

ANIMAL RIDDLEA cross between an art book and an animated book.Featuring twelve different families of farm animals. The French version the book opens on a riddle teamed with a woodcut. The riddles aim to have the child and reader guess which animal will be revealed before lifting the flaps. When the first of the two flaps is lifted it reveals the illustrated answer to the riddle, the second to show images of animals from the same family composing triptych as shown above.

THE PUDDLE Magnificient woodcuts illustrate this lovely picturebook for toddlers. The rain has stopped. There is only one puddle left on the path. A bee, a swallow, some sparrows, a turtle, and a few ducks in turn cool down in this puddle. When a little girl arrives and says: « Me too! I want to play to play with you! »; the ducks, waddle away. But playing alone is no fun! Luckily, a small pig arrives. The strength of this picture book resides in its simplicity: the artist turns a prosaic puddle into a real piece of art. Children will be filled with wonder to see nature come to life shortly after the rain, and the animals’ parade to quench their thirst or to frolic in the water. The Puddle is an artist’s book for toddlers.

THE INSIDE-OUTSIDE GARDEN CHIARA MEZZALAMA, RÉGIS LEJONC

Chiara Mezzalama is an italian author. Inspired by her youth, this story is a powerful evocation of childhood. Régis Lejonc, a famous french illustrator, captures the innocence, hope and enchantment of new friendships.

A wartime friendship between two children, living on different sides of a wall.

In 1980, Chiara’s father is appointed italian ambassador in Teheran in war torn Iran. The rest of the family will follow in the summer. One warm evening Chiara packs her suitcase. She takes toys, where they are headed she is not sure to find some. Where they are headed, there is an Inside and an Outside. Inside: a wild and enchanted garden. Outside: a monster city, soldiers, bombs. Between both a wall. One day, a boy climbs over the wall and into the garden... Soon they become fast friends…

Published in partnership with Amnesty International France.

This timeless fable is an ode to books and freedom; to the power of words and culture in the face of oppression.Black smoke is rising from the city where a fire has been raging for months. In his palace, the Sultan rejoices as one by one, his kingdom’s books are tossed into the flames. Soon, all traces of the past will have disappeared. Only his own history will remain. When the fire dies, a child sifts through the ashes and finds a few words that haven’t perished resisted the flames: “O wonder, a garden in the flames.” Overcoming his fear, he copies them onto the palace walls. The crowd starts to imitate him, writing before words disappear from memory. The weight of these words leads to the collapse of the wall – and the tyrant. Barroux’s paintings offer splendid variations on colours. Lines of Arabic poetry appear here and there in the text and images.

TALES OF THE CHINESE PEOPLEGUILLAUME OLIVE, HE ZHIHONG

Seven wonderful traditional chinese tales. The characters in this book are as varied and as interesting as the people who invented them: an old man with a green beard, a dog that was born in an ear, a fierce and flea-infested ogress, a child who walked all his life to find the sun. Each of these stories reflects a different tradition. The authors, who love popular myths and customs, collected these tales from minorities living in China’s distant south-west mountains. Those presented here were selected for their impact and originality. Each ethnic group is portrayed in a painting on silk. The stories themselves are illustrated with paintings on rice paper.
