DECEMBER 2014 4 LAKE TAPPS LivingBestVersionMedia.com

Snag Island resident Leon Stucki (pro-nounced Stooki) has been involved in computers for a long time. Well before desktops, IM, cell phones, or even the Internet.“The year I earned my Ph.D. in Com-puter Science from UCLA was the first year such a degree was even offered,” he chuckled. “Before that, the closest degree offered was a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering. And that was way back in 1976.”After completing his Ph.D., Leon and his wife of 45+ years, Louise, left south-ern California. The couple settled in Au-burn in 1977, after receiving a job offer from Boeing.“My wife had grown up in Washing-ton,” he said. “I ended up spending eight years with Boeing, heading up one of the earliest software engineer-ing research groups in the world. we designed and developed some of the earliest computer-aided software engi-neering tools ever built.”But to Leon, who also holds an MBA, his true passion is empowering informa-

tion, both for technical and non-techni-cal use. Ensuring the right information is readily available to all interested par-ties. It was this passion that lead him to establish Future Tech Systems in Au-burn in 1987.“Bill Gates is famously quoted as want-ing to ‘Provide Information at Your Fin-gertips.’ While no one will argue that we have LOTS of information available to us now, we still haven’t really achieved the full intention of the famous phrase,” Leon explained. “What we have now is not so much information at your finger-tips, but files at your fingertips. We have custom program files, Word files, Excel files, PowerPoint files, Pictures, Videos, Visio files, and many more. Frequent-ly it becomes a major challenge when looking for the latest vital information. It is often like searching for a needle in multiple haystacks. You literally have files scattered everywhere. While you may not need every shred of informa-tion available to you, you do need the latest and most relevant information, and that’s where we come in.”This was the vision behind Envision®

VIP [Visual Information Portal], a soft-ware program designed to do just that. One that has been in continual develop-ment since the mid-1980s.According to a tutorial narrated by Leon, Envision® VIP gives clients the ability to intuitively organize and man-age any relevant information that is important to them. Quite literally any-thing of interest can be easily included and shared with all who could benefit from it.“Our program helps bridge communi-cations and clarify detailed information between tech specialists and non-tech decision makers. Important details can be collapsed or expanded to facilitate understanding.”“Envision® VIP helps empower our clients to strategize more effectively. To make the information work for them. Note, as an aside, I utilized these capa-bilities during the decade-long Save the Lake campaign.”After first visiting Lake Tapps in the mid-1990s, the Stuckis later chose to make the lake and Snag Island their

home in 1997. It was in December of that year that Puget Sound Energy an-nounced that the White River Hydro-electric Power Operations might shut down for good, putting the very ex-istence of Lake Tapps and her vibrant community in question.“We were placed in a situation where we might end up without a lake. I be-came actively involved with many other great community members who were equally concerned. A number of very diversely talented and concerned com-munity members banded together to solve this dilemma and ‘Save the Lake,’” Leon said. “The process went through many stages. We were really concerned that our lake not disappear or morph into sand dunes. That it might look kind of like how it looks today with the lake down so low.”While the White River Power Opera-tions did eventually cease in 2004, Lake Tapps and its vibrant community re-mains largely because of the efforts of residents like Leon Stucki.“One of our significant achievements was the negotiation of a guaranteed Lake Level Management Agreement

between our Community and Cascade Water Alliance.” he said.Leon was also instrumental in convinc-ing the US Postal Service to officially recognize Lake Tapps as its own com-munity, distinct from Sumner or Bon-ney Lake.“This change has been very well re-ceived in the years since,” he shared. “It always seemed strange to list Sumner or Bonney Lake as an address for someone living on beautiful Lake Tapps. But the reality is, we couldn’t have done it with-out the community. Literally thousands of volunteer hours, and extensive exper-tise helped preserve this community. It’s a spirit that remains strong today.”In addition to running a successful business and being involved in his com-munity, the Stucki family includes one daughter, three sons and three grand-daughters. He is very involved in his church, even serving as a “stand-in” for Santa every year. Leon is also an Eagle Scout, serves as the VP of the Lake Tapps Community Council and has been a Snag Island trustee for many years.

But for all his success, he is always quick to praise the community he and his family have called home for nearly two decades. “We love it here on Snag Island in the middle of Lake Tapps. We truly have some really great people in our com-munity.” •

First Layer2 packages ladyfingersSmall strawberry JelloSmall frozen strawberries sliced and drained.Enough good sherry to soak the ladyfingers. (I use Harvey’s Bristol Cream.)

Place one layer of ladyfingers in bot-tom of glass bowl, soak in sherry, put a layer of strawberries on top then another layer of ladyfingers, soak that layer in sherry.

Make Jello, according to directions except reduce water by half a cup.

Allow to cool but not set and pour over ladyfingers.

Refrigerate several hours.

Second LayerBird’s Custard PowderOne quart half and halfWhite sugar

Make custard according to instruc-tions on custard packet.

Allow to cool, stirring so as not to get a skin on it.

Refrigerate.

Third LayerOne pint of whipping cream1/2 tsp. vanilla

Right before serving, whip the cream and vanilla and put on top of the custard.

The above was my mother’s recipe. My best friend’s mother replaced the strawberries with canned drained apricots, which she marinated in brandy overnight, and used brandy to soak the ladyfingers and used apricot or peach jello.

FRITZ: My name is Fritz and I am a 2 year old Schipperke Mix. I am a very playful fellow with an energetic personality. I am a bit nervous meeting new people, so please be patient with me and go slow and I will love you in return. I would probably get along with a dog-savvy cat but I prefer a home with no kids.

BERNARD: My name is Bernard. I am a 5 years old large dog with an energetic person-ality and would get along with dog-savvy cats and other large dogs with a similar personality. I prefer kids 16 and older. I am rather protective of my food and toys. It is possible that I have allergies that may require follow-up care with my new vet

ARTHUR & MERLIN: Ar-thur and Merlin come with loads of good karma for their new adoptive family. A kind volunteer has paid their adoption fee. Both boys are neutered, micro-chipped and

are current on vaccinations. Merlin is a handsome, talkative 2 year old tabby with a great personality and always has a meow to share, especially at meal time. Arthur is a playful 6 month old tuxedo boy. They enjoy each other’s company at the shelter and are Feline Leukemia Positive, which means they must be the only cats in the home and cannot go outdoors. Infected cats usually have several years of good quality life before develop-ing signs of disease, and some individual cats may live much longer. FeLV poses no risk to dogs or people.

MIDORA: Hi everyone. Let me introduce myself. I’m Midora and today is my 246th day at the shelter. My dream is to be ad-opted before I have been here for 365 days. I mean, I really do have a lot to offer. I’m only 7 years old and am sweet, gentle and affectionate. Plus, I have the most gorgeous yellow eyes, if I do say so myself! Because

I was overweight when I arrived, I’ve been on a special diet to help me lose weight and to prevent diabetes. Guess what? I’ve already lost 2 pounds, so it’s working! I hope whoever adopts me will keep me on it so I stay healthy. Can you please help make my dream come true?

COMMUNITY INTEREST:

A Word from Bonney Lake Police DepartmentDuring this holiday season there will be an increase of packages being shipped to homes containing gifts and other valuable items. Every year we see reports of thieves following UPS, FED EX and USPS delivery trucks and then stealing the packages off porches during daytime hours.

Please take precautionary measures in order to prevent becoming a victim of package theft and have a plan for your packages that may be arriving at your home this holiday season.

• Leave a note not to leave any packages on your porch.

• Keep tracking number and follow the delivery schedule so you can arrange someone to be there to retrieve it; neighbor, friend or family member.

• Request signature proof of delivery.

• Have the package shipped to the local store or distribution center for pickup.

• Speak with relatives/friends advising them to let you know if they are planning on having any gifts shipped so you can keep an eye out for them.

• Have package delivered to your workplace.

Report suspicious activity of vehicles in your neighborhood. For your safety, do not intervene but try to write down the license plate number and get a good description of the suspect and call 911.
