The county’s first airport was dedicated in March 1930. Commercial service began in 1932 when Eastern Air Lines used the airfield for refueling stops. Eastern began passenger and air mail flights from Vero Beach three years later. The mid-1930s saw the start of efforts to attract a military air presence in the county. Several larger cities in the state urged building coastal air defenses along the coastline. Vero Beach’s airport manager, Bud Holman (for whom the stadium at Historic Dodgertown is named), wanted to be a part of that system. In December 1935, the Army Air Corps chose the Vero Beach airfield as a host site for its war games. Over two weeks, 200 planes were part of the maneuvers. Mock raids from Vero Beach destroyed ships and docks at Biscayne Bay and Tampa Bay. In 1940, as a national defense measure, the Civilian Air
Administration put $250,000 into the facility. Then, in 1942, the U.S. Navy selected the airport as a Naval Air Station. The Navy bought 1,500 acres around the 100-acre city owned airport facility and closed some streets to local traffic. It was to be a flight training base for about 3,000 Navy personnel and Marines. Pilot training began in 1943. Pilots practiced
dive-bombing, day maneuvers and night fighting in Grumman F6F Hellcats. By 1945, NAS Vero Beach was one of eight in the United States. It had its own satellite base and a small field at Roseland. Also that year, small fields in Stuart and Fort Pierce helped support NAS Vero. At its peak, NAS Vero Beach held 1,400 servicemen and 250 planes. The NAS was deeded back to the city in 1946.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on while waiting for Alabama and Oregon to play in college football’s national championship game:
• Law enforcement officers have never been under such scrutiny. Two highly publicized citizen deaths – by shooting in Ferguson, Mo., and after a chokehold incident in New York City – changed the dynamics in terms of public perception. Which is unfortunate. I have a suggestion that I’m hoping you’ll treat as a new year’s resolution. Sign up for a Citizen’s Academy being offered by the Indian River County Sheriff’s Office or the Sebastian Police Department. (The former starts Jan. 14 and lasts 11 weeks, and the latter starts Jan. 15 and lasts 12 weeks.) I attended the one offered by the Sheriff’s Office a few years back, and it remains one of the most satisfying experiences during my eight years here. I learned so much. I can pretty much guarantee you’ll see law enforcement work in a new light.
There’s no charge to attend either Citizen’s Academy. I can’t think of a better way to become a more informed resident of Indian River County. Talk to any Citizen’s Academy graduate, and they’ll tell you the same thing. If you’re interested in attending the Citizen’s Academy offered by the Sheriff’s Office, call 978-6317. If you’re interested in attending the one offered by the Sebastian Police Department, call 589-5233.• Sometime in 2015, the Press Journal will be moving from its half-empty building on U.S. 1 to the Seminole Building in downtown Vero Beach. Bob Brunjes, the publisher of Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers, tried to put a positive spin on the move when he announced it in a front-page column on Dec. 21. I have yet to talk with anyone who sees it that way.

LEMMON DROPS: Citizen’s Academy a great way to put yourself in shoes of law enforcement officers
Russ Lemmon
You can count the number of reporters based in Vero Beach on one hand, so it makes sense for the PJ to move to a smaller building.• One of my favorite interviews of 2014 was with Lila Jeanne Bussey, who will turn 90 in April. She has started a business with 20-year-old Eric Behymer called Estate Treasures (3200 43rd Ave., Suite 10). Lila has at least two “antiques” in her home that won’t be sold at the new store – an electric typewriter and a fax machine. Both are from the days when Lila owned a real estate agency in Missouri.• While out distributing Lemmon Lines last week, I had to smile over this clever name of a business on Ponce de Leon Circle: Ponce de Salon.• Pam Cooper, supervisor of the Archive Center and Genealogical Department at the library, knows I love numbers, so she sent me news about a milestone achieved by volunteers. “They indexed 100,000+ obituaries from 1912 to the present!” she wrote in an email. “The library receives requests for obituaries almost daily from lawyers, researchers, family
historians, detectives, and others. The complete index is online at http://irclibrary.org/genealogy/. “It was started back in 1986 by members of the Indian River Genealogical Society, and today it is done by library volunteers who index the following newspapers: Sebastian Sun, Vero Beach Press Journal (all versions), Fellsmere Farmer, Fellsmere Tribune, Newsweekly, St. Lucie County Tribune (prior to 1925) and Vero Beach 32963. Thanks to the many volunteers who abstracted and entered the data.” Those seeking copies of an obituary should contact [email protected]. A scanned image will be emailed back to you.• If more than 100,000 people have died in Indian River County since 1912, what has happened to all of the bodies? Tom Lowther, the owner of a local funeral home, provided a statistic that floored me. Approximately 95 percent of the deaths today in Indian River County are handled by cremation, he said. (I would have guessed it’s, at most, 30 percent!)

Happy New Year!
Some trivia: Whether at Bob Evans or C.J. Cannon’s, Russ and his wife usually eat breakfast at Table 51. In what will be an occasional feature, Russ breaks bread with someone you may or may not know. Jessica Bacher is a coach. Not for a sport, but rather for life. Earlier this year, she had some big life changes of her own. She decided to switch careers – she previously worked as a counselor for fifth- and sixth-graders in Ohio – and moved to Indian River County. Starting in January, she’ll focus on being a “divorce coach.” Yes, a divorce coach. She’s not interested in working with divorcees wanting to throw a pity party. “I want clients interested in moving forward,” she said. “They have the confidence to move ahead. They want to figure out, ‘What’s next?’ and ‘Where do I go from here?’ ” When Bacher, 40, got a divorce three years ago (after 12
years of marriage), she did not seek out a coach to help her through it. “I didn’t know ‘divorce coaches’ existed,” she said. “I didn’t know it was an option.” In addition to working with divorcees, she’s marketing her business – Get to It Coaching – to help people making major changes in their lives. (Her still-under-construction website is GetToItCoaching.com)
She says hiring a professional coach – she charges $1,500 for 12 sessions – provides you with an “accountability partner” to make sure you follow through on the goals you’ve set. “You’re paying somebody to keep you in line,” she said. Bacher says therapists, psychologists and counselors are mainly about “fixing the past.” “They want you to fly on your own,” she said. “Coaching focuses on the future. My job is to help you figure out what to do with the wings.”

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.
467. Theme from “Rocky” (“Gonna Fly Now”) (1977) Bill ContiMemory: If this song doesn’t motivate you to get going, nothing will. 466. “You Are” (1983) Lionel RichieMemory: You know, there’s something to be said about a love song with simple lyrics. 465. “No Rain”(1992) Blind MelonMemory: Here we are 20-plus years later, and I still remember the video.
