The Historic Jungle Trail – a road made nearly a century ago so citrus growers could haul their produce on the barrier island – winds for about 8 miles through the hammock habitat through the island north of Vero Beach city limits. Although cars drive along it, it’s mostly used by cyclists, joggers and walkers. It’s made of hard-packed sand. Public outcry over plans to abandon it in 1983 and 1986 resulted in the north end of the road – Jungle Trail north of Old Winter Beach Road – as an official Florida Greenway and a historic landscape. It’s on the National Register of Historic Places. A “dirt trail” back in 1920, the county designated it a public road. It was almost 14 miles long then and meandered past a schoolhouse, residences and through citrus groves. It had a grass median and ran from the Vero bridge (just north of the current Barber Bridge) north to the

Brevard County line. The beautiful shell/sand road with trees and shrubs with scenic overlooks of the Indian River prompted the Chamber of Commerce to advertise it on picture postcards. It became known as Jungle Trail, but also known through the years as State Road 252, State Road A1A, Inlet Road, Narrows Road, Orchid Road and Vero Road. Today, it begins to the north at the Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge and continues south,

through the refuge, and past gated golf course communities. If you are on it, watch for snakes sunning themselves in the road early morning or at dusk! You’ll cross Orchid Island Drive and State Road 510 (Wabasso Beach Road). Historic Jungle Trail ends at the paved Old Winter Beach Road.

Six bite-size Lemmon Drops to nibble on before shipping 2014 to the history books:

• I guess it goes back to when I was in junior high and, often with the help of my chauffeur mom, delivered the Indianapolis Star. Christmas tips provided such a thrill. Looking back, it wasn’t the dollar amount (I’d say the average tip was $3). Rather, it was just nice knowing my work was appreciated. You know what I mean? That’s why we make it a point to give a Christmas tip to “our” server at the three restaurants where we eat breakfast on a regular basis. It brightens their day. And we feel good because we’re able to say “job well done” to these hardworking women – Jessie at Bob Evans, Judy at C.J. Cannon’s and Michelle at JP Matty’s. There are hundreds of restaurant servers in Indian

River County. Their average pay is $19,000 a year, according to the website indeed.com. They have to put up with everything from unruly kids to grumpy adults. Worse, some people are just jerks – earlier this year, I was appalled to see one guy give the server a “one-finger salute” as he left the restaurant. Thankfully, the vast majority of customers are pleasant and treat the servers with respect. Which reminds me, I wonder how many single women on a date believe the old “waitress test” is still applicable in today’s world. That is, how a man treats the server is how he will ultimately treat her. Obviously, not all servers are worthy of praise. Some aren’t very organized, some don’t have the personality, and

some don’t have the physical coordination. As is the case with any job, the bad ones usually don’t last long. I know many of you already leave Christmas tips for servers. This is meant to be a nudge for those who typically don’t. If you go to a restaurant this week, won’t you consider leaving a few extra dollars for your server?• Thanks to Jane Young for letting me know about the really cool “Christmas doors” inside the office of Diabetes and Endocrine Associates, located at 2835 20th St. Photos of the four decorated doors are on the Lemmon Lines page on Facebook. If you don’t have Facebook, stop by the office and check out these doors! They’ll make you smile.• As someone who takes trash to the Winter Beach Convenience Center at least once a week, I was glad to see the County Commission reverse its decision to close the facility. If not for the unsung petition-gatherers outside the gates on 65th Street, this never would have happened. So, kudos to them for their tireless efforts.

• A Christmas downer: A local business owner called to report a nearby nail salon was targeted in a scam. The owner of the salon (who was not born in America) was told Florida Power & Light would be shutting off their electricity within an hour unless they sent money to an account. Thankfully, the salon owner consulted with a fellow business owner – who reminded the salon owner their electricity is supplied by the City of Vero Beach, not FPL. Why do people prey on others?• I’m sure I wasn’t the only person surprised by the repaving of a 2.2-mile stretch of Old Dixie Highway north of 53rd Street. It’s being done at a cost of $1.8 million. The county’s share is about $450,000. “Although motorists probably did not notice the asphalt cracking and raveling, the Old Dixie Highway pavement was nearing the end of its life cycle,” said Chris Mora, the county’s director of public works. Um, OK.• Here’s wishing you and yours a very Merry Christmas.

Merry Christmas!

As owner of a used DVD shop, I occasionally find fairly obscure movies that turn out to be quite good. Here are three of them:

• The Vanishing (1993, R, Directed by: George Sluizer). After his wife is abducted at a roadside gas station, Barney (Kiefer Sutherland) becomes obsessed with finding her. Long after the authorities have given up hope, Barney presses on and actually discovers the identity of her abductor. The ensuing cat and mouse game between the two will have you on the edge of your seat. This thriller also stars: Sandra Bullock and Jeff Bridges as the chemistry teacher-turned-psychopath who abducts her.• Away We Go (2009, R, Sam Mendes). Burt and Verona (John Krasinski and Maya Rudolph) are a very loving modern couple who are expecting their first child. Due to a bombshell dropped by their parents, they are forced

with making the decision of where they want to raise it. Their adventure begins! “Away We Go” is a hilarious and engaging road movie with a ton of heart and features a great supporting cast: Catherine O’Hara, Jeff Daniels, Jim Gaffigan, and Maggie Gyllenhaal to name a few.• The Jacket (2005, R, John Maybury). Jack Starks (Adrien Brody) is wrongly accused of murder and committed to an institution for the criminally

insane. There he is subjected to a bizarre experiment (straight-jacketed and locked in a body drawer) by the doctors. Jack has visions of his own imminent demise and struggles to make sense of it all, and prevent his own death, before time runs out. The talent-rich cast also includes Daniel Craig, Keira Knightly, Kelly Lynch and many more!

Russ Lemmon, who loves music (and lists), spent a lot of time putting together his Top 500 favorite songs of all-time. For the next few years, Lemmon Lines will be counting ‘em down.

470. “Fantasy” (1978) Earth, Wind & FireMemory: I love how this song starts out slow and builds to the point where you can’t resist singing the high-pitch parts. 469. “Here I Go Again” (1982) WhitesnakeMemory: A classic from one of the “hair bands” in the ‘80s (back when I still had hair). 468. “Wind of Change”(1991) ScorpionsMemory: This song would be a hit in any decade, from the 1960s to today.
