Historical noteWe understand that there has been a house on the site of Leigh Mill since around 1085. Standing on the banks of Statton Brook, and recorded in the Doomsday book, Leigh Mill ground corn before the First World War and for close on 900 years the inhabitants of Godstone and Wolcnested had baked their bread from its flour, other than a short spell when it produced gunpowder in the 17th century. The land of Leigh Mill was once owned by Eustace of Boulogne and the first name recorded in ownership of the mill, 150 years later, is Robert de Molendino. His family owned the property for a number of generations. Leigh Mill lay tenantless and in ruins after the Black Death, but recorded to have been in bad repair three years before it struck. Then, from around 1423, the mill was under the ownership of the St. Clair family, tenanted by the Lee family who prospered here. George Evelyn, responsible for bringing gunpowder to England, was teaching Englishmen the art of making gun powder owning one of a few licenced mills, and ensured Godstone Mills were producing and supplying gunpowder to the government, until they were then all closed in 1636. The current building, outlasting the windmills on Tilburstow Hill and Hilly Field behind the village green, is 18th century, and has been added to and converted into a charming residence where the current owners have been for 35 years.

The stunning mill pond sits to the north of the house and is home to beautiful wildlife. There is a large belt of flat land to the north of the mill, currently used as a 5 hole golf course, which would make excellent paddocks also. On this note, there is also a putting green on the right of the drive approaching the property. There is a further paddock to the South of the house, once used for the owners horse.
