Welcome to my new service

From personal experience, I know how

difficult it can be to decide what to do when a

loved one is taken ill or diagnosed with

chronic disease.

Due to the nature of disease, families

become very sensitive and protective of their

loved ones. Apart from the initial denial and

panic that people experience when they see,

sense or feel that something is wrong with

their loved one, together with the lack of

education available, is it really a surprise that

individuals don’t really know where to turn

especially those old age problems,

with rising care costs.

The experience has taught me just how

much I am able to contribute to my clients by

making sure they stay two steps ahead of

the system.

24 hour Runhe second staging of the HARP 24 willtake place at Westcliff Rugby Club and

Cherry Orchard Country Park on the weekend of22nd and 23rd June. The event is open to competitors of all abilities and involves running 4.2mile circuits through picturesque countryside. Aswell as giving participants the opportunity to get inshape for the summer, the event will raise muchneeded funds for the homeless of Southend. Thefirst staging of the event last year raised the magnificent sum of £4,500 for HARP and theorganisers are hoping to double that figure this year.

The event is aimed at teams of from 2 to 8 peoplebut individuals are also welcome. The idea is tohave a team member on the course throughout the24 hours of the event which starts at noon on 22ndand finishes at noon on 23rd June. However, this isnot obligatory and if teams wish to take a break, thisis OK. Last year one team ran one circuit each, thenpartied, stayed the night and left the next morning! The emphasis is on having fun while you run andcompleting the challenges of being involved for 24hours and running in the dark on the shortestweekend night of the year.

Is your business Mobile?ince the launch of Oracle over 7 ½years ago it has had the pleasure of

working with well over 1000 clients locally andknowing the success that many of them havehad from running advertorials in the magazines, felt it was about time it used the service itself tolaunch Oracle’s newest product, Mobile PhoneWebsites.

What’s a Mobile Phone Website?

I am sure that some of you will be asking thequestion what is a Mobile Website? Quite simplyit is a website used in conjunction with yourexisting website but for a mobile phone or anyother portable device.

When browsing the World Wide Web it can beextremely frustrating trying to read and navigatearound a standard website which has been orig-inally built for a standard computer screen. TheMobile Website allows users to navigate easilyaround a smaller and simpler version of theMother site. These sites have the advantage ofallowing the user to access the mobile friendlysites immediately while the thought is still freshin their mind, and allowing your business the

opportunity to grab that sale or purchase whilstit’s still hot!Below are just a few reasons why youneed to be thinking about having your websiteconverted into a mobile phone website.

With the launch of 4G in this country allowingfaster and better internet connection, the

People are spending more time on theirmobile phones than ever before.

It is predicted that by 2014 mobile internet will take over desktop internet usage.

One half of local searches are performed onmobile devices.

86% of mobile internet users are using theirmobile phone whilst watching the television.

Women aged 35 – 54 are the most active group in mobile socialization

On average Americans spend 2.7 hoursper day socializing on their mobile device.

approach to website creation that I straight awayasked her to help me out.

I was hugely impressed with the professionalapproach and how everything was indeed madeto seem very simple – I was included as part of theprocess and all my views and thoughts taken onboard and great advise given as we went along.

As I work in PR and Marketing I was possibly theworst client they had ever had! I examined everyword and every single piece of punctuation andmade innumerable changes so I could get it 100%how I like it – but every single time nothing as toomuch trouble and any problem at all, and thingswere done super fast.

Steve was a total angel and gave me a greattraining session and has been on tap for ongoingsupport as I get to grips with using the site.

I am absolutely delighted with my final website andthink it is everything I wanted and more – and I havehad tonnes of feedback from other people askingwhere I got it from as they want one too and I amvery happy to send them to the Oracle. I wouldheartily recommend anyone to work with them.-Tracy Jones www.brera-london.com

demand for immediate internet access from allportable devices will increase, allowing moreand more people to browse the net via their mobile phone. Other countries whose 4G is already up and running have already seen a significant growth in mobile usage.

According to estimates by The ITU (June 2012)there are 1.1 billion active mobile-broadbandsubscriptions in the world, that is 16 percent ofthe global population. Mobile-broadband subscriptions have grown 45 percent annuallyover the last four years and subscriptionsoutnumber fixed broadband subscriptions 2:1.

Natural Progression

Judging by the above evidence and seeing howthe mobile phone market is still growing at sucha pace it isn’t difficult to see why so many businesses are now making their general websites mobile phone compatible. This nextstage in the development of websites is a natu-ral progression and those businesses who wantto maintain a strong competitive edge will needto think seriously about updating their websiteto become mobile phone compatible in orderto maintain their market share and be crediblewithin this continually challenging technicalclimate.

very year the fashion industry tries torecycle an old look and push it as this

season’s ‘must have’. For years and some reasonknown only to itself, fashion was convinced weshould all be rocking the cowboy look and repeatedly flooded the High Street with plaid, denim and faux Stetsons.

But, as the folk singer Mike Harding sagely put it, it’shard being a cowboy in Rochdale, the spurs don’tfit right on your clogs and people laugh when Iride past, on our Alsatian dog.

For me, there is one wardrobe staple that nevergoes out of style and works with any outfit – thesimple, crisp white shirt. Whether on a man or awoman, nothing beats the white shirt.

The key is its versatility. Ditching a t-shirt for a collar conveys a more sophisticated appearanceand leaving a couple of buttons undone looksdressed-down and effortlessly cool. Frills and bowson a blouse add femininity and a touch of fun. Thisalso makes a blouse a little more ‘dressy’, whichmeans that it can be worn as a statement garmentin the office or for a night out.

A plain white shirt also acts as a blank backdrop

E

O

against which you can show off a ‘look at me’ accessory, be it an eye-catching necklace, over-sized watch, bracelet or bold-print silk scarf.Alternatively, keeping things plain and simpleallows you to show off a bold new hair cut ormake-up without any distractions. What’s more,it is the perfect way to let your personality shinethrough.

Teaming a shirt with skinny trousers and highheels creates a clever mix of professional, assertive and sassy. The versatility of the whiteshirt or blouse is never more perfectly demon-strated, than when you pull on a pair of bluejeans, or wear it with a suit or belted skirt.

Of course, there is one absolute rule, it must fit. Ifa shirt fits well then it becomes whatever youwant it to be and depending on your mood andthe situation, you’re wearing one of fashion’stimeless icons.

n the current environment of low interest rates, low economic growth and

modest but persistent inflation, savers and investors need to make the most of every opportunity to maximise the returns on theirmoney. Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) represent just such an opportunity; yet many people are wasting the valuable tax-saving advantages and investment potential provided bytheir annual ISA allowance.

There are two types of ISA: Cash ISAs are savingsaccounts where the interest is paid tax-free andStocks & Shares ISAs, as the name suggests, allowinvestment into a wider range of stock market andother financial instruments. The attraction of aStocks & Shares ISA is that both income and capital gains attract no further tax liability. However, there are restrictions on how much canbe invested in each type.

Figures from the Bank of England in Decembershowed that the average Cash ISA deposit rate isjust 0.65%. That a huge chunk of £200 billion insavings is failing to beat inflation is a starkillustration of how this rare tax-saving opportunity isbeing wasted (source: HMRC September 2012).

The reality is that the tax benefits provided by ISAsare best maximised by investing for the long termin assets capable of achieving capital growth andrising income. The likelihood is that interest rateswill remain very low for a number of years to comeand, regrettably, savers cannot even be sure thattheir Cash ISA account is achieving a better ratethan a standard deposit account. Against that

Money Matters

backdrop, whilst cash is certainly the right homefor money that might be needed in the shortterm, ISA allowances might be better utilised byinvesting in a diversified portfolio of assets thathave the scope to deliver higher levels of incomeand long-term capital gains and, in doing so,make the most of the tax freedom on returns. Ofcourse, investors need to bear in mind that thevalue of a Stocks & Shares ISA may fall as well asrise and it does not provide the security of capitalassociated with a Cash ISA.

As well as considering the best use of this and future years’ ISA allowances, those who have already built up significant ISA funds might beable to improve the income and capital returnson offer.

A thorough review of an ISA portfolio by an experienced wealth manager can ensure that it isappropriately structured and diversified to helpachieve immediate or future financial goals. ISAsshould be a cornerstone of financial planning, butit is also important to consider them in the context of an overall investment strategy and toensure that an ISA portfolio can be adjustedeasily to cater for changing needs.

hen I was young, my firstexperience of a dentist was when

I was told I needed to have a filling in mybaby tooth. I was absolutely petrified and myfriends really didn’t help by telling me it wasgoing to be very painful. And sadly that firstdentistry experience lived up to all thosebad expectations I had.

I remember sitting there in that chair andreally wishing there was a gentle, kindand patient dentist I could see who wouldmake all my fears of the dentist go away. Iwanted a person who would genuinelyunderstand why I was so scared and do allthey could to make my panic vanishwhilst also doing their best to make mytreatment as smooth and painless as possible.

Sadly that never materialised, so as I grewolder I became determined that the onlything for it was for me to become thatgentle, kind, patient and honest dentistmyself. That decision led me to universitywhere I trained as a dentist and I nowpractise at two clinics in Southend - King’sClinic in Leigh-on-Sea and Smiles onBroadway in Thorpe Bay.

W

Advertorial

If you are scared ofthe dentist, then this isthe lady you need to see…Childhood tooth trauma made Dee determined tobe the dentist you actually look forward to visiting

For me dentistry is all about those littledetails that make a big difference to a patient’s experience – both my surgeriesare designed around that philosophy.

I know the sound of drill can be quite disconcerting, but unfortunately for thetime being the drill is an integral part ofdentistry - so I came up with the idea ofproviding music headphones for patientswhich help drown out the drilling sound.

Another problem for patients is where tolook – you need something to distract

you and take your minds off what is happening, so on the ceiling above mydentists chair is a TV screen to occupy youreyes and thoughts.

I hate injections just as much as you so I gothat extra mile to ensure they are as painless as possible. I gently numb the target area of the mouth first with a soft, soothing gel before introducing the needle,so hopefully you will hardly feel it once I inject.

X-rays can be really uncomfortable too, having to put quite a big piece of plastic inyour mouth, so I will always do a relaxingbreathing exercise with my patients first tohelp them prepare for what is coming andmake it less stressful. Also there is nothingworse than holding your mouth open forages – it hurts! – so I finish off extendedtreatments with a jaw and neck massage.

I also understand a lot of the time thejargon that we dentists say makes norhyme or reason so I always endeavour tobe patient and speak in terms that thepatient understands as I explain thetreatment and advice. And all our decisionswill be based on what is best for you ANDyour wallet.

Coming to the dentist can be really difficult - even for those who aren’tscared! The last thing you need is to belectured – so I won't lecture you and Iwon't tell you what you need to do. I’ll always ask what you want and based onmy findings together we will develop arelationship towards you gaining ahealthy mouth.

As well as your day to day check up’s, fillings and extractions, I can also offer avariety of speciality treatments such asimplants, cosmetic dentistry andappliances to help treat clenching, grinding and jaw joint problems. I workreally hard to ensure my skills are constantly updated as I think it is reallyimportant to keep all treatments underone roof so patients know that they aregetting all the treatments they couldpossibly get from their one dentist theyknow and trust.

My fear of the dentist has never left me,so now every time I treat a patient I put myself back in that dental chair and remember how scared I was looking upat that person as they treated me, and wanting to be treated with that same gentle care that I now deliver to mypatients. It means I always strive to begentle and caring - and I think I’m gettingthere as my patients tell me it is likehaving butterflies in their mouths!

Next month’s recipe:

‘Classic Lemon Roulade'

‘Chargrilled Salmon with Asparagus in a Lime Vinaigrette’

It’s gluten free and Salmon isa good source of omega 3. You can grill, griddle or pop it on a barbecue in the summer. A big platter of this is lovely whenentertaining in the garden. Ready in 10 mins

Enjoy!

Brown takes charge! outhend United Football Club will behoping to make a late charge for the

end of season play-offs with new manager PhilBrown in charge.

Brown took charge on March 25th and signed adeal with the Roots Hall Club until the end of the2014/15 season. The new manager, who tookover from Paul Sturrock, is hoping his arrival canrejuvenate the squad.

Brown said: “I’m absolutely delighted to havebeen given this opportunity. A lot of peoplehave been asking me about when I’m comingback or whether I’d go down the media line.“My intentions have always been to get a freshchallenge and fortunately, after meeting Ron[Martin], the Chairman, I accepted the challengehere at Southend United with both hands.Hopefully we can go forward together.

“Football seems to have a lot of coaches andmanagers out there looking to get back into thegame. There are an awful lot of managers outthere, and by definition; the only jobs you getare when the clubs are in trouble. SouthendUnited definitely aren’t in trouble. We’re just onthe outskirts of the play-offs and there’s still anopportunity for us to get promoted.

Having sold 30,000 tickets for the big day atWembley against Crewe Alexandra in theJohnstone’s Paint Trophy final on April 7th, chief

executive Steve Kavanagh believes the volumeof tickets sold shows just how big the Club canbe. He said: “It underlines the need for a newground and shows the massive potential thisclub really has.

“If we can get things right and also have theright facilities then that potential can start to berealised.

“We set a target of 30,000 since the very first day, after the win against Leyton Orient in the AreaFinal, and within three weeks we had sold27,000 tickets.

“If half of the people who make the trip toWembley can come back to us here at Roots Hallthen our stadium would be full and reallygenerate the resources to help us push on.“We want them to give us a go and now thechallenge for us is to truly capitalise on thisopportunity.”

With Blues still to face Bristol Rovers andMorecambe at Roots Hall before the end of theseason, why not give the Blues Box Office a callon 08444 77 00 77 to book yourself a seat at oneof our two remaining home games.

his year I will have been in theAntiques business for 50 years and it

will be 40 years since I first had the gavel in myhand for an auction. You can imagine, I’m sure, that there have been a lot of changes in that timebut the strange thing is that like ladies skirtlengths those changes go in cycles.

Things are in fashion for a while and then outagain and with that the prices change. You willhave heard the expression “brown furniture isout” on TV and certainly if you have been sellinganything of that kind recently.

Whilst that may be no consolation if you are aseller it should whet the appetite of lots of

potential buyers because there are some terrificbargains out there but maybe not in the shops.Auctions are the supply point for the antiquestrade, dealing with estates and the goods andchattels of people who are downsizing but theyare open to the public too.

Are you getting my drift? Yes, of course you are.If you are hunting for furniture and decorativeobjects to enhance your home and be a good in-vestment (they are if you buy in a sluggish mar-ket like now) then get down to an auction andsnag a bargain. In fact you don’t even need toleave your arm chair. You can shop online justthe same as with a major store.

Simply check out the catalogue of anup-coming sale and if things catch your eye thenpop along and view them to check condition, size and so on and then sit back and bid in theauction room itself or even back in your armchair. It’s quite a buzz..........but be warned.........it’saddictive!

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas

his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
