The UK print industry has over 140,000 employees in around 10,500 companies. It produces a vast range of materials essential to everyday and business life.

Our training reflects the needs of this constantly changing industry and we can put together bespoke training tailored to your workplace. We boast state of the art facilities which are matched by the standard of expertise and teaching of the staff, all of whom have significant experience of working in the industry. We have been accredited by the National Skills Academy for Materials, Production and Supply and are BiT and Lean Management accredited trainers.

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with theoretical knowledge gained at College.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• a NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships)

• technical certificates relevant to their occupation and level of work• Functional Skills in English and maths• workplace Health and Safety knowledge.

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at College. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence.

Carton Manufacturing Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2069 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This level 2 course provides you with the theoretical andpractical based knowledge to support carton manufacturingprocesses. Designed for those who have already gainedemployment within the printing industry, It covers the following modules: essential good housekeeping, maintenance, health and safety, quality control and operating carton making equipment. These will be observed in the workplace to ensure you are competent along with portfolio building and online examinations.

Who should attend?Employees working within the print industry for at least 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionOnce you have achieved your intermediate apprenticeshipyou will be able to advance your career in your chosen field.

Carton Manufacturing Advanced Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2082 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?This apprenticeship provides employees in the print industry with the theoretical and practical knowledge to support carton manufacturing processes.

Who should attend?Employees working within the print industry for at least 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

Duration18 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionSuccessful completion of the apprenticeship could progress to become a machine minder or operator. Employees could advance their career in their chosen field, or continue onto a Foundation Degree in Print Production Management.

Print (Pre-press) Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2075 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?It provides employees in the print industry with the theoretical and practical based knowledge to support pre-press processes.

Who should attend?Employees working within the print industry for at least 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionOnce employees have achieved the Intermediate Apprenticeship they could progress on to the Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship in Print (Pre-press). Completing this training would enable employees to become a junior designer.

Phoenix Colour PLC has been in the business of providing commercial printing and marketing services for over forty years, and specialises in digital printing.

Peter Davis, Chairman, employs apprentice Sam Molyneux, who works as a Print Finisher Apprentice.

Sam completed his Apprenticeship in Print at Leicester College last year and is now enrolled on the Level 3 print finishing course. Last year Sam won the Apprenticeship Achievement Award at the Leicester Mercury’s Young Achievers’ Awards, in recognition for his hardworking attitude.

What is the training about?This training provides employees in the print industry with the theoretical and practical based knowledge to support the print administration side of the machine printing processes.

Who should attend?Employees working within the print industry as an administrator, for at least 30 hours per week and have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

ProgressionOnce employees have achieved the Advanced Apprenticeship they will be able to advance their career in their chosen field. Completing this training would enable employees to become an estimator or work within account management.

Print AdministrationIntermediate Apprenticeship

What is the training about?This Level 2 course provides employees with the theoretical and practical based knowledge to support print administration. Designed for those who have gained employment within the printing industry.

The course will encourage employees to start looking at how to improve their methods of working and produce high quality output.

This course will focus on the main components of print finishing from set-up to running a job and performing maintenance. Employees will be required to take exams to back up their knowledge and also be assessed in the workplace. They will gain a better understanding of print finishing and the print industry in great detail. Who should attend?Employees working within the print finishing industry for at least 30 hours per week and who have successfully completed an initial assessment process.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionFollowing completion of this course employees could chose to progress to management courses and also look to move into a supervisory role.

What is the training about?This course looks at the competencies required to run a printing press. Employees will learn in detail about health and safety, working practice and quality control. They will also start looking at how to improve methods of working and produce high quality output. Who should attend?Employees need to be in full-time employment to enrol on to this course.

ProgressionFollowing successful completion of this course, employees could chose move on to management courses and also look at moving into a supervisory role.

Digital ArtworkIntermediate Apprenticeship

What is the training about?This course provides the theoretical and practical based knowledge to support the creation of digital artwork for print. Designed for employees who have gained employment within the printing industry. Who should attend?Employees need to be in full-time employment to enrol on to this course.

ProgressionOnce the employee has achieved their Apprenticeship they will be able to advance their career in their chosen field. Successful completion of the apprenticeship would enable them to become an artworker, digital printer or pre-press operator. They could also move on to the Advanced Apprenticeship in Digital Artwork. Completing this course would enable them to become a junior or lightweight designer.

What is the training about?This course provides the theoretical and practical based knowledge to support machine printing processes. Designed for employees who have gained employment within the printing industry.

There are five different machine printing routes that may be studied towards – gravure printing, flexographic printing, lithographic printing, screen printing and web offset printing. Who should attend?Employees need to be in full-time employment to enrol on to this course.

This course will specifically focus on the creation of artwork that is print ready. Employees will be assessed in the workplace and will be taught theory at the same time at College and will be required to provide evidence of their ability and keep a portfolio of work.

What is the training about?This course combines knowledge and ability to produce digital products. It will focus on the digital aspects of print through the workflow to the finished product. Who should attend?Employees wishing to study this programme must be employed within a company that uses digital machinery.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionSuccessful employees can move on to the advanced apprenticeship. Within this field there are opportunities for progression within digital printing, but also into pre-press roles and also design. Supervisor roles could be a long-term aim and also to work towards a fully qualified printer.

Digital PrintingAdvanced Apprenticeship

Course Codes: C3289 Fees: 1Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?The Certificate in Printing and Graphic Communications equips them with all the basic theory and knowledge they need to work in the printing sector.

The employee will learn skills for a specialist role such as machine printing, print finishing, mechanised binding, desktop publishing and carton manufacture. The Certificate in Printing and Graphic Communications is for people who work, or want to work, in the printing industry. Who should attend?Employees need to be in full-time employment and have a good level of professional competency to enrol on to this course.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionSuccessful completion will aid career progression as a supervisor or team leader.

Business Improvement Techniques NVQ

Course Codes: C2079 Fees: 3Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This qualification focuses on the use and implementation of lean manufacturing techniques in order to make productionprocesses cheaper and more efficient. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study.

Training outcomesThe aim of the training is to help employees apply the methods of continuous improvement within their industry – skills that are currently in high demand.

The mandatory units of the programme cover those areas which have a common approach such as workplace organisation and problem solving. The optional units offer a choice of techniques and systems that can be combined to meet the needs of organisations and employees.

DurationThis programme will take a maximum of nine months and employees may start this course at any point during the year.

AssessmentThe qualification will comprise of being observed in the workplace by an Assessor and also the completion of portfolio work.

ESF Business Improvement Techniques Process NVQ Units

Course Codes: C2264 Fees: £0Start Date:Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?This qualification is appropriate for employees in the manufacturing sector, working across a broad range of areas. It is designed to assess occupational competence in the workplace where employees are required to demonstrate skills and knowledge to a level required in the industry. Who should attend?Employees would usually require at least four GCSEs at grade C or above, including English OR a full Level 2 Vocational qualification and English Functional Skills/Key Skills/Basic Skills/ESOL at Level 2. Employees without these qualifications who can demonstrate academic ability to succeed at Level 2 will also be considered.

Training outcomesThis programme covers areas such as safety and team working, application of workplace organisation techniques, carrying out lead time analysis, carrying out set up reduction techniques, carrying out mistake/error proofing.

DurationThis is a one day course.

AssessmentThis course is assessed via continuous assessment.

ProgressionThese qualifications allow employees to demonstrate competence in business improvement techniques at a level required by the manufacturing industry. Training outcomesSubjects typically covered are health and safety, communication, how to create artwork that is print ready and how to follow a brief set by your colleagues or the customer.

DurationThis programme will take a maximum of nine months and employees may start this course at any point during the year.

AssessmentThe qualification will comprise of being observed in the workplace by an Assessor and also the completion of portfolio work.

Digital Print NVQ

What is the training about?This qualification covers all of the essentials within today’s digital environment. At level 2, all of the training will be carried out under supervision from a work-based supervisor.

The employee will then be assessed by a Trainer Assessor on how well they carry out their tasks to a set criteria. Digital print covers the preparation of the files through to managing a digital printing device and output quality. This course also crosses over from pre-press to elements of print finishing. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study. It is ideal for anyone starting out in a job in printing or for those with some experience of printing wishing to progress in their career, increase their skills and take on more responsibility.

Training outcomesSubjects typically covered are health and safety and communication. Employees will be observed helping to make-ready and keep up the supply of materials throughout a run. As confidence and experience grows, they will move on to operating the equipment and managing the quality of output.

DurationIt will take a maximum of nine months and it can be started at any point during the year.

Performing Manufacturing Operations NVQ

What is the training about?Performing Manufacturing Operations is a work-based qualification designed for those employed within the manufacturing sector. The main objective of the qualification is to offer the opportunity to prove competence of industrial performance, knowledge and understanding and to recognise the ability of employees working in the sector. Who should attend?here are no formal entry requirements for this course, but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study.

Training outcomesThis Diploma covers multiple occupational areas and is suitable for people involved in the manufacturing sector from trainees to managers. Employees will be assessed on areas such as health and safety, effective team working, in conjunction with their daily activities dependant on the job role and nature of the business.

DurationThis programme will take a maximum of nine months and employees may start this course at any point during the year.

AssessmentEmployees will be assessed in the workplace.

ProgressionEmployees with this qualification are able to progress into specific areas of manufacturing such as print, furniture, food, or Business Improvement Techniques.

Pre Press NVQ

What is the training about?This training is carried out within the workplace under supervision from a work-based observer. The training will require the employees to collate a portfolio of evidence and will cover all aspects of pre-press. The learner will be working with artwork files and preparing them for print. They will also require a good eye for detail and working to briefs and tight deadlines. The training will cover the creation of files through to imposition schemes and final output of the files. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study and want to increase their skills and take on more responsibility.

Training outcomesIt covers health and safety and communication. Employees will also be observed preparing files that are print ready and how to output these files. This can be covered through creating PDF’s to outputting image carriers.

DurationIt will take a maximum of nine months and employees may start this course at any point during the year.

AssessmentThe qualification will comprise of being observed in the workplace by an Assessor and also the completion of portfolio work.

ProgressionEmployees may look to progress to higher level job roles such as a supervisor or team leader within a pre-press related environment.

Pre Press NVQ

Print Finishing NVQ

What is the training about?This course will focus on the finishing of printed material. This can range from a variety of machines and print finishing techniques that are widely used in today’s industry. At level 2, the employee will be taught the basics and will develop their set-up and running abilities. A portfolio of work will be gathered and observations will occur within the workplace. This course will be ideal for employees who are new to the job role or for those who want to refresh their skills. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study. Ideal for anyone starting out in a job in printing or for those with some experience of printing wishing to progress in their career, perhaps as a supervisor or team leader.

Training outcomesIt covers health and safety and communication. Employees will also be observed in the workplace helping to make-ready and keep up the supply of materials throughout a run. As confidence and experience grows, employees will move on to operating the equipment and managing the quality of output.

Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study.

Training outcomesThis course looks specifically at Print Finishing and how employees work within that environment, paying particular attention to health and safety, communication, organisation and also quality.

What is the training about?This qualification focuses on the employee producing printed goods. This covers the main printing processes of lithography (web and sheet-fed), flexography, screen, gravure. Employees will be taught the main principles of print and how to help set-up machinery and run jobs. Employees will also be taught how to maintain the presses and the health and safety involved within the industry. Who should attend?There are no formal entry requirements for this course, but employees must be employed within the area they wish to study and want to increase their skills and take on more responsibility.

What is the training about?It is designed to develop the necessary skills within traditional and Emedia applications for multimedia formats including web and print.

Who should attend?Employees with a GCSE English grade C or equivalent (without this you will be asked to complete a Literacy test) plus 80 UCAS points to include either:• Level 3 Edexcel National Diploma/GNVQ Adv/AVCE

in a related subject• A2 qualification in a related subject• A relevant Access to HE training course.

We welcome applications from employees who do not match the standard entry requirements but who can demonstrate commitment to studying this subject at university level, and who can evidence academic or vocational experience in a related field.

Training outcomesThe programme has a firm basis in design history and skill application followed by option pathways for Graphics and Emedia. In the first two years the programme focuses on the skills and knowledge required for a successful career in this dynamic sector. In year three there will be more independent academic skills and professional media practice.

What is the training about?This programme aims to provide graduates with professional work-ready skills and commercial business knowledge for successful careers in the Creative Industries. It will be delivered largely through a “project model” which reflects a modern multi-skilled approach essential to the development of a portfolio, freelance or employed career. Emphasis will be placed on the development of skills and knowledge enabling individuals to become fully engaged, independent and critical practitioners who have the ability to project manage and understand the entrepreneurial and financial requirements for success within the broad Creative Industries. This will be achieved through significant research to support project proposal, the implementation of business facing strategies to fulfil project realisation and professional development within relevant industries. Who should attend?Those who already have a pre-existing relevant Level 5 qualification such as Foundation Degree or HND.

Training outcomesThe ‘project model’ basis of this programme requires employees to research, propose and execute a body of work relevant to their sector. This will be managed through subject specialist input and guidance relating to the assessment components for the professional development/project preparation and work based project modules. Business skills and continuing professional development pertinent to freelance and micro business operation will underpin the student’s activities within the personal development/project preparation and professional practice modules. To support this module a “business for creative industries” programme will be delivered which seeks to develop business skills and future strategies to enhance commercial viability. Critical engagement with key practice and theory will be delivered through the creative and critical enquiry module. The programme aims to produce graduates able to create and market their own work, contributing to the future shape of the creative industries

What is the training about?This training gives employees confidence in using a digital camera, downloading their images and digitally outputting their work.

Who should attend?It is ideal for industry professionals who would like to update their skill set and learn a range of new digital photography techniques. It is also suitable for those in related fields who would like further insight into the world of digital photography.

Training outcomesEmployees will gain knowledge and confidence in using a digital camera, both to take photographs and to use ICT to alter or print them.

DurationNine weeks, three hours a week, 6pm to 9pm.

AssessmentContinuous assessment. Employees will be given one or two basic briefs/tasks to work towards and be expected to keep a supporting sketchbook/log book.

ProgressionEmployees could progress to an Higher National Certificate in Photography or the Traditional and Photoshop Certificates. Within the workplace employees could take and produce more photos themselves or use digital photography on a more regular basis.
