We have established relationships with leading industry suppliers which ensures that our onsite training facilities are stocked with the latest products, and use state-of-the-art techniques. Hair and Beauty companies can up skill their younger, less experienced workforce and develop and retain their experienced team members.

Apprenticeships

An Apprenticeship is a work based training programme which allows employees to complement the skills that they learn, develop and use within the workplace with theoretical knowledge gained at College.

Training outcomesOn completion employees will achieve:• an NVQ in their chosen occupation (NVQ Level 2 for

Intermediate Apprenticeships and NVQ Level 3 for Advanced Apprenticeships)

• Functional Skills in English and maths• workplace Health and Safety knowledge• personal learning and thinking skills• employer rights and responsibilities.

AssessmentAssessment is undertaken in the workplace and at College. Employees should demonstrate competence across various work-based tasks and compile a portfolio of evidence.

As a former Leicester College learner, Jo March, Salon Director for March Hair, has first hand experience of the standard of training courses and programmes available through the College.

After setting up her first salon in Market Harborough six years ago, Jo made sure her business ethos included supporting and training young people. She said: “During my days as a trainee hairdresser, I found I sometimes lacked the support I needed to enhance my training role. “I believe if you invest in your staff, it can help make the business stronger.”

Jo currently has eight apprentices across her two salons in Market Harborough and Rugby and has plans to expand on the training and courses on offer.

She added: “For me Leicester College is reputable and reliable. The courses are both bespoke and flexible, Leicester College has given me an outstanding service and that’s something I’ve never had that with other training providers.”

March Hair Hairdressing

Hairdressing and Barbering Intermediate Apprenticeship

Course Codes: C2477 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 2

What is the training about?It is aimed at employees who are already in full time employment in a commercial salon and who would like to gain an NVQ 2 (or equivalent) in hairdressing or barbering.

It is a two-year course where employees will develop practical skills and study hair theory and the science of hairdressing or barbering. Employees will attend College on a Monday or Tuesday and then work in a commercial salon for the rest of the week. An allocated College assessor will assess employees in the salon on a regular basis and liaise with the employer to ensure they receive the required training. Employees will also work towards achieving Functional Skills qualifications in English and maths. Who should attend?Employees working within hair salons with the following:Essential attributes are the ability to communicate with all levels of staff and types of clients, appropriate personal presentation, and a willingness to work flexibly. There are no formal exam entry requirements, but good GCSE grades in English, Maths and a design subject will be advantageous.

Duration12 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees may progress on to the NVQ Level 3 (or equivalent) qualification in their chosen career and achieve the Advanced Apprenticeship. On completion of this training employees will be able to gain employment in their chosen career path either in a salon or as a freelance stylist or barber.

Bridal Hair Certificate

Course Codes: C0628 Fees: £260 Start Date: 26 February 2015 Level: 3

What is the training about?It will provide further insight into the design and construction of bridal hair creations.

Who should attend?Employees who would like to learn the skills to be able to create bridal hair styles and how to attach ornamentation securely. Completing this training will broaden your employee’s portfolio.

Training outcomesThe training will include all the relevant Health and Safety relating to bridal hair styling. Practically employees will cover the various ways of preparing the hair ready for styling, the products available to use, and the types of ornamentation available and how to attach it securely. Styles will include rolls, pleats, knots, twists, plaits, curls and woven effects.

DurationTwelve weeks, three hours per week.

AssessmentContinuous assessment and exams.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees could progress on to a Level 3 hairdressing qualification, depending on their prior experience, or a Level 2 Diploma in Hair and Media Makeup.

Hairdressing and Barbering Advanced Apprenticeship

Course Code: C2478 Fees: 1 Start Date: Any time through the year Level: 3

What is the training about?It is aimed at employees already in employment as a stylist or barber. Employment in a salon is essential and employees must have a flexible working attitude.

Who should attend?Employees must be employed for more than 30 hours in the hairdressing or barbering industries, and successfully complete an initial assessment process. Employees must have already achieved an NVQ 2 (or equivalent) in Hairdressing or Barbering or have five years’ equivalent experience across the technical units.

Duration18 to 24 months depending on the employee.

ProgressionEmployees may wish to progress on to Higher Education or complete a teaching certificate. Employees will be able to open their own business, work in supervisory position within a salon, work on the cruise lines or as a technician within the hairdressing or barbering industry.

Barbering Award

Course Codes: C0640 Fees: £700 Start Date: 18 September 2014 Level: 2

What is the training about?A combination of theory and practical training to give employees information and knowledge, alongside a hand on approach to barbering.

Who should attend?Employees should have good communication skills, enthusiasm and commitment.

Training outcomesUnits include: health and safety, client consultation, shampoo and conditioning, cutting men’s hair, and cutting facial hair to shape.

DurationOne evening per week for 19 weeks.

AssessmentExams and continuous assessment.

ProgressionEmployees can become junior barbers within a salon or barbers, or progress to a Level 2 Hairdressing Diploma.

Asian Bridal Makeup College Certificate

Course Code: C0636 Fees: £180 Start Date: 6 November 2014 Level: 2

What is the training about?Employees will gain basic knowledge and understanding of Asian bridal looks, paisley and modern mehndi designs.

Who should attend?It is aimed at employees who have a specific interest in Asian bridal make up and mehndi, and need a basic knowledge of skin care, including cleansing, toning and moisturising.

Training outcomesEmployees will cover Asian bridal makeup application including strip lash application. Within mehndi employees will be practising and creating simple designs including paisley. Over the six week course, four weeks will be spent on Asian bridal makeup and two weeks on mehndi. Please note that a patch test is required for mehndi and lash glue.

DurationThree hours per week for six weeks.

AssessmentAssessment is continuous.

Nail Art Certificate

Course Codes: C3188 Fees: £175 Start Date: 14 March 2015 Level: 2

What is the training about?Candidates will study various nail art techniques including freehand painting, application of jewels, rhinestones and flat stones. The training also include other application techniques such as glitter dust, foil wraps, transfers and striping, as well as health and safety, client consultation, contraindications and aftercare.

Who should attend?Our beginners Nail Art course is designed for employees that are looking to extend their skills through application of nail art.

Training outcomesThe nail art techniques are demonstrated by the tutor. Candidates will be expected to perform nail art application on each other with support and guidance from the tutor. Upon completing the course employees will understand and be able to apply a range of nail art techniques.

DurationThis is a two day course.

AssessmentAssessment will be via coursework and exams.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees will be able to progress on to other nail or beauty therapy courses here at Leicester college.

Manicure Certificate

Course Code: C3187 Fees: £175 Start Date: 20 September 2014 Level: 2

What is the training about?A manicure treatment improves the appearance of the hands and nails. It is a very popular service offered in beauty salons, hairdressing salons and nail salons, it is also an excellent service for mobile therapists to offer. This course will provide the basic skills and knowledge needed in order to undertake manicure.

Who should attend?No previous experience, qualifications or knowledge within the industry is required to attend our manicure course.

Training outcomesDuring the course employees will learn about the products and equipment used to perform a manicure, as well as learning the techniques required for filing, treating cuticles, hand and arm massage and polish application, relevant health & safety, consultation skills and contraindications. DurationThis is a two day course.

AssessmentAssessment will be via coursework and exams.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees will be able to progress on to other nail or beauty therapy courses here at Leicester College.

Makeup and Lash and Brow Treatments College Certificate

Course Code: C0630 Fees: £250 Start Date: 26 February 2015 Level: 2

What is the training about?It is aimed at employees who have an interest in makeup and will give them basic skin care skills in day, evening and special occasion makeup and eyelash and eyebrow treatments.

Who should attend?Any employee interested in updating their skills in makeup and lash and brow treatments.

Training outcomesTraining will cover the structure and function of the skin, how to identify skin types, corrective makeup methods and selection of suitable products and equipment to provide makeup care treatments. Employees will also cover eyelash and eyebrow tinting, eyebrow shaping, strip lashes and individual lashes, together with related anatomy and physiology, contra-indications, aftercare advice and safe health and safety working practices.

Duration12 weeks.

AssessmentPractical assessments and a multiple choice exam.

ProgressionEmployees could progress on to a Level 2 in Make Up or Beauty Therapy, or individual awards in facial treatments, manicure, pedicure or waxing.

Waxing

Course Code: C3189 Fees: £150 Start Date: 25 September 2014 Level: 2

What is the training about?Warm waxing is one of the most popular salon treatments. This course covers areas of facial and body waxing using the “pot” and “spatula” system.

Who should attend?This course is ideal for beginners or therapists who want to update their skills.

Training outcomesOur full practical waxing training days will provide employees with all the theory and practical experience required to apply and remove the wax safely and professionally from the entire body including leg, bikini, underarm, lip, chin and eyebrows.

Over the duration of the course employees will cover the following: anatomy and physiology of the hair and skin, product knowledge, essential health and safety, contra-indications, consultation, practical application and aftercare.

DurationThe course runs for four weeks, one evening per week.

AssessmentAssessment will include practical assessment and an examination.

ProgressionOn completion of this training employees will be able to progress on to other beauty therapy courses here at Leicester College.

Gel Polish

Course Code: C3190 Fees: £175 Start Date: 25 October 2014 Level: 2

What is the training about?Gel Polish a very popular service offered in beauty salons, hairdressing salons and nail salons. This Gel Polish course will give delegates all the theory and practical knowledge required to apply gel polish effectively.

Who should attend?Our Gel polish course is suitable for both beginners as well as existing nail technicians although they will be required to hold a recognised manicure certificate to attend the gel polish course.

Training outcomesThe course will cover the following: • health and safety • contra-indications • preparation of the natural nails prior to the application

of Gel Polish • client consultation • application of Gel Polish (Colour and amp; French) • removal process of Gel Polish and aftercare. Gel Polish procedure is demonstrated by the tutor. Delegates will be expected to perform a Gel Polish application on each other with support and guidance from the tutor. Upon completing the course you will understand and be able to apply Gel Polish.

DurationThis is a two day course that runs on Saturdays.

AssessmentAssessment will include practical assessment and an examination.

ProgressionOn completion of the Gel Polish course progression can be made on to a range of Nail or Beauty related courses here at Leicester College.

Gel Nails

Course Code: C3191 Fees: £200 Start Date: 10 January 2015 Level: 2

What is the training about?Gel nails are a very popular nail service and this course will give you all the theory and practical knowledge required too be able to apply gel nails.

Who should attend?The Gel nail course is suitable for both beginners or for existing nail technicians though they will be required to hold a recognised manicure certificate to attend the gel nail course.

Training outcomesThe course provides both theory and practical knowledge with everything from natural UV Gel overlay, tip application, blending and shaping, maintenance, removals, as well as health and safety, consultation, contraindications, and aftercare.

All application and techniques are demonstrated by the tutor. Delegates will be expected to perform gel nail application on each other with support and guidance from the tutor. Upon completing the course delegates will understand and be able to apply gel nail enhancements.

DurationThis is a three day course that runs on Saturdays.

AssessmentAssessment will include practical assessment and an examination.

ProgressionOn completion of this training progression can be made on to other nail or beauty therapy courses here at Leicester College.

Artistic Makeup and Special Effects Foundation Degree

Course Code: C0039 UCAS Code L36 W452 Fees: £6,000 Start Date: 22 September 2014 Level: 5

What is the training about?This university-level course provides employees with the skills and knowledge needed to secure a career in artistic makeup within the fashion and media/prosthetics industries.

Who should attend?Employees require a GCSE English grade ‘C’ or equivalent (without this they will need to complete a literacy test) and 80 UCAS points to include either: Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical and Media Make-Up (plus 80 UCAS points), Level 3 Edexcel National Diploma/GNVQ Adv/AVCE, an A2 qualification in a related subject, Art and Design Foundation Studies, or a relevant Access to HE course.

We welcome applications from employees who can demonstrate a willingness and commitment to study this subject at university level.

Training outcomesThe programme will cover the following modules: • the human body • visual communication in design• postiche • fashion/editorial hair and make up techniques • specialist make up and historical and contextual

understanding. • advanced prosthetics• digital media for make-up industries • historical and cultural hairstyling • contextual referencing visual media • freelance practitioner • negotiated study.

DurationThe course is three days per week for two years, though employees may be asked to work on evening productions and events.

AssessmentCoursework and Exams.

ProgressionDelegates can “top up” to an undergraduate degree by joining the final year of the BA (Hons) Degree Creative Industries at De Montfort University. Employees may also apply to other universities to ‘top up’ on related degrees to work in fashion/beauty, theatre, film/TV or media as a freelance make-up artist or to seek employment in industry as a technician working with prosthetics.
