HOW DOES THE APPRENTICESHIP SYSTEM WORK?Once you’ve secured an apprenticeship at a salon, your trainerwillteachyoutheskillsthatyouneedtoknow.HITOwill arrange for these skills to be assessed. Because the qualification is skill based, the harder you work to learn each skill, the sooner you’ll become a qualified hairdresser.

SO HOW DO I GET STARTED?Tostartyououtonyourcareeryou’llneedtofindasalonthat’s willing to take you on as an apprentice. You may find alistofapprenticeshipsupforgrabsontheHITOwebsite.

You might need to go out and actually find a salon yourself. You’ll need to show your commitment to the salon, so that the employer knows you’re enthusiastic and dedicated to their hairdressing business. After all, they’re going to be investing a lot of time and money in you.

But you’ll also want to make sure that it’s the right environment for you! So take some time to get a feel for the salon vibe.

WHAT ELSE DO I NEED?Aside from a friendly personality, creativity, and a keen interest in fashion and hair trends (including keeping yourself looking fashion forward), you’ll also need at least three years’ secondary and/or tertiary education. A good level of Mathematics, Art, English and Communication Skills are important too. You may already have some of these key skills and units from your NCEA.

Oh, and you’ll need the motivation and desire to launch your career! If you’re dedicated to becoming a hairdresser there are so many cool places this can take you.
