MEMBERSHIP REPORT

Usually we expect the summer months to be relatively quiet for

Membership news with holidays etc but this year has been quite active, mainly for

the wrong reasons. Sadly, in recent weeks we have lost four stalwart members and

have no new members to fill the gaps. We heard of the passing of these four

members and appreciations appear in this Bulletin issue. Some of our recent losses

will be well known to longer standing members but will be strangers to newer

members, so we felt it is important to recognise their contributions made to the

Society over the years.

Margaret Gregory was a Full member, Jeanne Hare was an Hon Life member,

Rob Cassie and Violet Lovatt were both Life members and their contributions are

recognised in this issue.

At the end of July 2018 our remaining membership stood at 76 Full

members, 13 Life members, 4 Honorary members, and 2 Hon Life members plus 2

Juniors in Canada giving a Total of 95 adult members to support our activities.

Most of our paying members have paid this year’s subscriptions and I

apologise for an error in the Subs rate given in the last Bulletin. The rate this year is

NINE Pounds per person and I enclose a reminder form for your use, if needed (

21 unpaid at present ).

We would love to hear some good news from Members for a change so get

your pens / pencils out and let us know what you have been up to.

Recipes

Edinburgh Scones Ingredients

10 oz. Self raising flour 2 tsps baking powder

¼ tsp. Salt 1 dsp. Sugar

2 oz. Butter ½ cup Currants

1 egg Milk as required

Method

Mix together dry ingredients, then rub in butter and add fruit. Combine egg

and milk and add to the dry mixture, to form a soft dough. Knead on a lightly

floured board. Roll out and cut into ½ inch thick rounds, Bake in the oven at 450º

(gas mark 8) for 10 minutes.

Scotch Snow Cake Ingredients

1 lb Arrowroot 8 oz. Castor Sugar

8 oz. Butter 6 Egg whites

A few drops of Almond or Vanilla Escence.

Method

Combine arrowroot and sugar. Cream butter, then gradually stir in sugar

mixture, beating well. Beat egg whites until stiff, add to the mixture, and beat for 20

minutes. Add a few drops of essence. Pour into a greased, 8 inch tin and bake for 1

to 1½ hours in a moderate oven 350º to 375º Gas mark (4 to 5)


Mrs Jeanne Hare

an appreciation

It is with great sadness that I report the loss of Mrs Jeanne Christine Hare who passed away on 17th March 2018 and whose funeral took place on 11th April from her home in Hinckley.

Unfortunately, the Society did not get this news until June so could not support the family at the

time. Jeanne was born in Coventry with a maiden surname of

Morris but she had a Scottish grandmother and on her

application form to join the Leicester Caledonian Society gave “Sutherland” as the part of Scotland with which she was most

associated. She married Tony Hare at Market Bosworth in 1946 and had two sons. She had a dress shop in Hinckley

called “Just in Time” and later worked as a secretary in the

family engineering business. She now has 2 sons, 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren to carry on the name.

She and Tony were keen Scottish country dancers and were members of the Royal Horticultural Society which

involved them in flower show judging and they were delighted when grandson Tom won a Gold medal at Chelsea. They also

enjoyed antiques and attended sales in London.

Jeanne became the Honorary Secretary to this Society from 1990 to 1994 and was also Chairman from 1993 to 1994. She maintained her interest in the Society so with Tony was awarded

Honorary Life Membership at the AGM in 2016. President Murdo Ferrier presented them with their certificates on 24th May 2017.

We send our condolences to all the family.

Miss Roberta Cassie SRN an appreciation

It is with considerable sadness that we report the passing of one of this Society’s

stalwarts from our Life Membership list.

Miss Roberta Isabella Cassie was born on Christmas Eve, 24th

December 1922 at

Burton upon Trent the 6th of a large family of twelve children. Both of her parents were

Scottish, her father’s side from Falkirk and her mother’s was from near Dunbar. Rob was

proud of her Scottish heritage and maintained her extensive Scottish links most of whom

live in or around Edinburgh.

We know relatively little about her early life but she showed a vocation for

nursing and enrolled as a trainee nurse and was State Registered in London on 25th

November 1946 after examination at Northampton General Hospital.

Her first recorded address on her application form to join this Society was given

as Zachary Merton, (convalescent home) at Woodhouse Eaves, Leicester where she was a

nurse and the form was dated 14th

October 1972. She was proposed by Janet Cutting, the

then President and seconded by Miss Adams who was a leading dancer at the time. She

gave Edinburgh as the place with which she was most associated and paid the princely

sum of 75 pence as a subscription. She became matron of Ashby & District hospital and later moved to

Leicester in New Parks where she lived with her sister Jean.

She became a Life Member in March 1972 and continued her association with the Society becoming

President from 1981 to 1984. Her abilities gave her a wider audience and she was elected President of the

Scottish Presidents’ Association 1993 to 1994, the 6th

from our Society and she is well remembered.

She continued to show an active interest in Society affairs and attended several Burns Dinners in her

later years including one in 2011 with Alan Mouncer as President plus five of our Past Presidents. Latterly she

became less able and retired to an apartment in Birstall.

In her younger days she was known as a “teller of stories” which were published as “Cassie Roberts”

tales but which are now hard to find.

We send sympathies to her extensive family who saw her off on her last journey on 27th

Mrs. MARGARET GREGORY

An appreciation

17/9/1944 - 5/6/2018

Margaret was born in Banbury and met Greg while she was at school. She went to university and became a

teacher. After Greg and Margaret were married and had Michael their son, they moved to Wigston, Leicester, and

then Karin was born.

Margaret taught at Leicester Grammar School and later at Abington School, Wigston. Margaret was always

busy. She was a leader with the Brownies and then the Guides, and ended up as Commissioner for the Guides. She

was a member of the local W.I. taking up various offices. She belonged to the Wigston Methodist Church and was a

member of the choir. She even had time to pursue her favourite hobby, gardening, but even this lead to making jam

from her home-grown produce to sell in aid of the church funds. She then went on to organising the Shoe Box

charity.

Margaret and Greg became regular members of the Caledonian Monday night dancers. Margaret being

Margaret took over collecting the money at the door and organising the tea rota! She always made the new members

very welcome. When Greg became treasurer of the society Margaret supported him at all the Caledonian events.

Margaret sadly passed away on the 5th June after a brave fight against cancer and she will be sorely missed by

all her friends in the Leicester Caledonian Society.

PLACES OF INTEREST AWAY FROM THE USUAL TOURIST

ROUTES.

FRANK SLIDE ALBERTA CANADA

We visited here in 2007 and received a very warm welcome. They have an affinity to Aberfan. The

information below is from the website Mysteries of Canada.

Frank was a burgeoning mining town of 600 nestled in the Crowsnest Pass in the shadow of the

massive Turtle Mountain which rises over 7,000 feet above town. With a river and a railroad running from

Frank to Pincher Creek and to Blairmore.

The local Indian tribes would not camp near the base of the Mountain calling in the “Mountain that

Walked” On the morning of April 29,1903, the town and mountain became one as a 70-million-ton wedge of

overhanging limestone broke away, shattered into large boulders, crashed 300 feet down the mountain across

the valley and 500 feet up another mountain on the other side of the valley and is known as the Frank Slide.

In a brief 100 ear-shattering, bone-jarring seconds, 76 people lost their lives, 23 were injured and 17 miners

were trapped inside a mine shaft behind over 100 feet of rubble and stone.

In 1901, excavation of the mines had begun and a drift mine was sunk deep into the bowels of

Turtle Mountain to mine the massive deposits of coal beneath the eastern slope of the mountain. Tremors

became a regular occurrence in the mines, especially in the early morning hours, and the miners became quite

accustomed to the shaking. Besides, the tremors made their work a lot easier. By April of 1903, the mine was

almost ‘self-operating’ in that all the miners had to do was to shovel up the coal as it fell from the ceiling.

A group of 17 miners went to work the midnight shift that fateful night in April. The mine shaft,

for some time, had been experiencing mysterious crackling and rumbling. When Turtle Mountain “walked”

that night, the miners found themselves 100 feet from the mine mouth behind a wall of rock. Luckily none of

them were hurt. With water seeping in and an air shaft blocked by limestone boulders. For over 12 hours they

dug a new shaft in the soft coal and early in the morning of April 30 they broke through into the dawn light and

were safe. During the tunnelling, one of the miners broke his leg. He was lifted from the shaft on a stretcher

only to find his home destroyed and his wife and three children had perished. These same miners then went on

to continue in the rescue of fellow residents of the town

Thankfully only 75% of the town was affected in some way. Of the 66-100 people unaccounted

for and presumed dead (the official record states 76), only 12 bodies were recovered. Among the known dead

were 21 children.

One of the most spectacular escapes was that of Marion Leitch, a baby at the time. She was thrown

from her crushed home on to a boulder which, in turn, crushed a neighbour’s home and came to rest. She was

found sitting on top of the boulder in a pile of hay which had been ripped out of a mine barn by the boulder.

Marion went on to live a full life away from Frank.

The town of Frank has rebuilt from the rubble. Some 6000 people now live within the shadow of

the “Mountain that Walks”. But none will ever forget the Frank Slide.
