MEMBERSHIP NEWS

I hope you enjoyed a good Year that’s past and are looking forward to an

even better New Year. Our membership numbers are still on the low side and we do

not have any new members to welcome. If you know of any potential Caledonian

Society members do please get in touch and / or pass them a copy of your Bulletin

to give an idea of what’s on offer.

I am sorry to hear that 3 members are not renewing their membership for the

coming year and two members have not paid their subs for the current year. Age

and some infirmity are largely to blame for the losses rather than any declining

interest in our activities.

Sadly, we have recently lost a long term member Mr Douglas Plimbley who joined in October 1975 as an Associate Member but who maintained Full membership to the present time. His application form did not give any Scottish roots or obvious links and I never noticed a Scottish accent. He was a regular attender at St Stephen’s UR Church and I mainly saw him at St Andrew’s services each year. He may have been a Dancer since he joined as an Associate all those years ago at the subs rate of just £1.25. His first wife, Kath, died in 2004 and he is survived by Margaret to whom we send our sympathy.

Merry Christmas from Canada

Members will remember Eleanor Donaldson, who joined us in March

2006, for her replies to the Toast to the Lassies at Burns’ Night dinners. She trained

as a dietician and shared some of her interests with talks to the Society. She married

Dr Kelvin Ng in Glasgow in Sept 2012 and they moved to Hamilton, Ontario,

Canada when Kelvin had a Fellowship in neurology at McMaster University. They

are both overseas Members of the Society and keep in touch with news and cards.

We recently had this card addressed to the Society and I thought we should share it

with members. Their daughters are Elizabeth (four), Georgina (three) and Alexa

(one) are growing fast and have recently taken up ice skating with hard hats like

American footballers. Kelvin is working hard and Eleanor hopes to return to work

soon as Alexa started nursery recently. Best wishes from the Society to them all.

For information: Elizabeth Louisa Ying Li Ng is the oldest daughter, followed by Georgina and

Alexa..

HOGMANAY.

The Society along with the Leicester Branch of the R.S.C.D.S. held a

Hogmanay Party at the Glenfield Sports Pavilion, which was attended by about 40

members.

Along with dancing there was an intriguing quiz set by Colin Headley as a

story quiz which included reference to some 34 Scottish dances. Also, there was a

musical quiz by Gill Mouncer and a T.V. and film themes by Murdo Ferrier. Gina

Ferrier had compiled a photo quiz of 40 film stars, Politian’s, sports people and

topical persons in the news from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

We all had a good laugh with Charades again set by Gill and then a skit on

the news by the two Ronnie’s alias Alan Mouncer and Brian Stevens, in Dinner

Suits and black tie.

All to soon it was the New Year followed by Auld Layne Syne. Many

thanks to all who set quizzes and Brian Stevens for convening the celebration not

forgetting the organizing committee of 3

Following its success, we have booked the same venue for Hogmanay

2019 so put it in your diaries as places are limited.

President.

Homemade Scottish Sausage Rolls

A Scottish recipe using beef instead of pork,

to fill puff pastry to create incredibly delicious Sausage Rolls. PREP TIME 20 minutes, COOK TIME 25 minutes, TOTAL TIME 45 minutes.

Ingredients

a) 1 slightly beaten egg white, to brush pastry

b) 3/4 tsp black pepper

c) one package puff pastry

d) water

e) 1/2 tsp nutmeg

f) 3/4 tsp coriander (dried, ground) do not use fresh cilantro

g) 1 1/4 tsp salt

h) 1 lb ground beef

i) 1 cup plain breadcrumbs

Instructions

1. In a large bowl, mix together the salt with all the spices and breadcrumbs. Add the ground

beef, and about 1/2 cup of water. Using your hands, mix all the ingredients together until it

has a meatloaf texture, adding water as needed. The sausage should hold together when

squeezed, without being too wet.

2. Place the puff pastry on a clean counter, mat or board. Cut into rectangular(ish) pieces,

they don’t need to be exact, depending on the size of the rolls you want to make; from

cocktail size to “man” size. Alternatively, you can make a long roll and then cut them into

the size you desire.

3. Shape some meat into logs, and place close to one end of the pastry, but don’t put too

much meat or they will burst open when baking.

4. With your finger, lightly dampen one of the edges with a little

water, seal shut, then crimp with a fork, as shown. 5. Place on a lined (Silpat, aluminium foil or parchment) edged

baking tray, make three or four small cuts in the top of the

pastry, and brush with a little beaten egg white.

6. Bake sausage rolls in preheated 400º F oven for about 25 minutes or until golden brown.

7. Serve with brown sauce.

BURNS LUNCH

January 25th was a date to celebrate the birth of Robbie Burns. It

started well with an interview at Radio Leicester on the Ben Jackson show

who quoted the first verse of the “Toast to the Haggis” The President

chatted with Ben over various items but mostly about haggis and its

flavour and together with a brief history of Burns. Mention was also made

of the Society dancing and the Royal Country Dance Society in Leicester.

After the interview it was on to the Belmont Hotel where we kept

with the Societies traditions with Haggis bashed Neeps and Tatties,

followed by raspberry cranachan.

However, all was proceeding well, when all power and lighting to

the Hotel was lost (curtesy of Western Power, who were working outside).

So the haggis was piped in by our Piper Carl Wilkinson and addressed by

John Smith in candlelight.

The President rose to say Grace and all the lights came on!! (was

it something that was said!!).

Soon after the haggis was served and the chattering continued

right through to the short formal Toast to Robbie Burns by John Niblett, a

Toast to the Lassies by Ralph Spence and response by Margaret Spence.

All too soon it was time to leave with requests for the same next

year, As Ben likes Haggis the President has subsequently invited Ben and

his crew along to our lunch next year, so to that end a provisional booking

has been made for Friday 24th January 2020. Please make a note in your

diaries.

Murdo Ferrier

President
