Get it? No? Well you should, because a short while ago, Lego Worlds was released on Steams Early Access Program. Alongside the trailer embedded below, Lego Worlds was also just released on Steam Early Access. What does this mean? Well essentially, it means the game is in a playable state, and the developers are wanting feedback from the community, but it’s in by means finished. Think of it as a Pre-Beta. Lego Worlds is set to follow in the same direction as Minecraft, with its proceduraly generated worlds, allowing the player to choose from an infinite sandbox full of items, places to explore, things to do, and structures to build. Currently only in Early Access, Lego Worlds “will be a fully open-world, creativity-driven game.” There’s a new kid on the block.

Get it?

Currently only in Early Access, Lego Worlds “will be a fully open-world, creativity-driven game.”

There’s a new kid on the block.

The game is planned to be on Steam Early Access for the duration of 2015, then the Development Team will look at a release candidate for early 2016 but only if they feel the game is complete and ready for release, as well as being in-line with the communities visions for a great game.

In a statement, the managing director of TT Games Tom Stone said

“Lego Worlds embodies the physical, Lego brick-building fun that people have enjoyed for decades, on a digital platform that delivers an entirely new type of experience with the beloved bricks. From the brick-by-brick editor, to discovering an expansive range of items, characters and creatures to populate your worlds, the creative possibilities are endless.”

The basic idea of the game is relatively similar to that of Minecraft, however with one difference.

The players can choose to either drop into randomly generated worlds, or they can enter existing worlds which can be altered by hand or by using pre-built structures in order to change the worlds to something of their own ideas.

Some players that accomplish in-game rewards and achievements will also get physical Lego sets, although specific details weren’t disclosed.

In the future, Lego Worlds will also add multiplayer support and sharing features. How these will be implemented is unknown, but it might be similar to how Minecraft multiplayer and sharing works; Players join Minecraft Servers Hosted by other people and interact with the world and other players.

Time will tell however if Lego Worlds can compete with both Minecraft’s massive multiplayer community (now approaching 20 million players) and how easy it is to setup a Minecraft server for friends, or a community.

With the wide variety of customization, server types, and sizes available for people looking to run their own Minecraft community, it’s going to be hard for Lego Worlds to snatch up some of the space in the Multiplayer-region.

On top of this, last month YouTube announced that viewers watch Minecraft videos more than any other game on the platform. These potential issues combined with Minecraft’s dominance of the open-world sandbox genre will make it very hard for Lego Worlds to distinguish itself. The developers are going to have to come up with some unique ideas.

What do you think about Lego Worlds? Do you think it is too little too late? Will Minecraft be toppled by a new giant? Are bricks and blocks even that different? Let us know in the comments below!
