Background/SummaryThe Auntie Karen Foundation invites you to participate as a sponsor at our tenth annual Legends Of...Concert Series. In 2004, our inaugural event featured Rober-ta Flack in concert with special guest, The Capital City Chorale. In 2005, we pre-sented Jazz Legend, Dianne Reeves with special guest, The Auntie Karen All Stars, South Carolina’s Finest Musical Talent. Patrons are still raving about Al Jarreau (2006) and Patti Austin (2007). In 2008, we welcomed The Joe Sample Trio and Take 6. While in 2009, we showcased funk Legend, George Duke and jazz vocal-ist, Rachelle Ferrell. 2010 brought us the singer/songwriter duo, Ashford & Simp-son, while in 2011 we showcased 10 time Grammy Award winner, singer, songwriter, producer, Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. 2012 we welcomed two Grammy Award winning Legends: Ramsey Lewis, pianist and the return of vocalist, Patti Austin, 2013 sold out performance with Gladys Knight. Join us on February 21, 2014, at The Koger Center for the Arts in Colum-bia, SC, as we celebrate our 11th Annual Concert!

The Auntie Karen Foundation created the Legends of...Concert Series to pay tribute to the contributions African American mu-sic has made to history. Each year during Black History Month, the series profiles a jazz, rhythm and blues, gospel or blues artist who has made a lasting contribution to the history of music. The series places a special emphasis on Jazz Legends. In addition, we have extended our series to include “Legends of...In the Schools”. “Legends of...In the Schools” is a series of art events designed to salute African American Heritage. Events include: Folk Art, Quilting, Dance, Spoken Word, Writ-ten Word and Music. Through a partner-ship with The Columbia Museum of Art, on the last Saturday in January 2014, we will feature some of the best local and regional artists at no cost to the public.

Auntie Karen® FoundationThe Auntie Karen Foundation is a global, nonprofit, 501(c) 3 charitable corporation certified by the state of South Carolina on October 31, 2001. The foundation’s mission is to create and implement a series of reproducible community outreach programs designed to empower, enlighten and educate through the arts. Programs include:

Annual Young Entrepreneur’s Conference For the eleventh year, this innovative conference held on the campus of Benedict College has brought together youth (ages seven to twenty two) from across the region to foster economic empowerment. Each year, ten young entrepreneurs under the age of twenty five are featured. Auntie Karen’ s Place TV Pilot: Auntie Karen’s PlaceThe Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with SC ETV and Palmetto Health Children’sHospital to produce a 30-minute DVD that uses puppets and music to provide a simple way to explain life skills such as: health, emergency preparedness, jazz music and financial literary. The Foundation received a grant from the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Columbia and SC Competitive Grants program.

Artpreneur/Technopreneur Classes The purpose of the Artpreneur/Technopreneur classes is to “inspire a new generation of business leaders through arts and technology”. Classes include: visual art, dance, creative cooking, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, spoken word and etiquette. The Auntie Karen Foun-dation’s Artpreneur pilot program started in 2003.

Hugs From CarolinaThe Auntie Karen Foundation partnered with Auntie Karen Inc. and City Light Inc. to cre-ate Hugs From Carolina. Hugs From Carolina, a division of Hugs Around The World, has Olivia The Octopus spreading hugs to the survivors of Hurricane Katrina. The program was launched in Biloxi, Mississippi on October 14, 2005. Children were given an adoption kit which included: an Olivia The Octopus Hand puppet and the book “Olivia Gave A Hug Today”. Once again, Olivia and City Light Inc. joined forces with a Hugs Campaign in Saluda, SC.

Legends of...(A Salute to Black History)The Auntie Karen Foundation pays tribute to the contributions of African Americans with the Legends of...Programs. Each year, the celebration includes: Black History Program with The Columbia Museum of Art, The Legends of...Master Class with CSAM (Center for Southern Af-rican American Music at USC) and The Legends of...Concert & Silent Auction (Koger Center)

Gordon’s GardenThe Gordon’s Garden Program was created to teach kids about healthy living habits. Gordon, an original Auntie Karen character, is an overweight, purple Jamaican Yam. The Jamaican Yams are used to teach healthy living skills to youth via music, books and DVDs. The fear that Gordon’s weight and eating habits are putting him at risk for developing diabetes was the inspiration for the garden.

Auntie Karen’s character Olivia The Octopus is an International Jazz Diva. The Hugs Around The World campaign was created to have Olivia travel the world giving hugs. To date Olivia has traveled to Brazil, Costa Rica, Venezuela, Japan, Holland, Ghana and Nigeria.

a Tribute to George DukeKirk Whalum, Lalah Hathaway & Jonathan Butler

Kirk WhalumSoulful, passionate, stirring...these are the words most often used to describe Kirk’s music. Forged from his Memphis, (TN) gospel roots and his 1980‘s initiation into the thriving Houston, TX nightclub scene, Kirk’s big, rich tenor sound is unmistakably his. The 80’s were highlighted by Kirk’s stepping out of his blossoming sideman role and forming his own band. It was there that Kirk ultimately developed both his “voice” and songwriting in the crucible of the local club scene––especially at a rooftop club called Cody’s. It was also in Houston where jazz pianist Bob James “discovered” him and brought him on tour, which led to five successful albums

with Columbia Records, including Cache, Kirk’s first #1 album. As well, Kirk and Bob received a Grammy nomination for their collaboration album, Joined at the Hip. After moving to Los Angeles, Kirk became an in demand session player for top artists like, Barbara Streisand, Al Jarreau, Luther Vandross, Larry Carlton, Quincy Jones and most notably, Whitney Houston, amongst many others. It’s his sax heard on the mega-hit, “I Will Always Love You.” Kirk soon followed that career high point with his phenomenal hit album released on Warner Bros. Records, For You, perhaps the most successful of over 25 solo recordings to date; others include his eclectic Gospel According to Jazz series, (Chapters 1, 2 and 3).

An ordained minister, Kirk has earned his Masters of Art in Religion. Kirk is the recipient of numerous awards and acknowledgements for his musical excellence including three Dove Award nominations, an NAACP Image Award nomination and has won two Stellar Awards-Gospel music’s highest honor. An eleven time Grammy nominee, Kirk won his first Grammy award for Best Gospel Song (“It’s What I Do”-featuring Lalah Hathaway) alongside life-long friend and gifted writer, Jerry Peters.

Lalah HathawayBorn to R&B/Soul music royalty, most people know her simply as the daughter of late Soul music legend, Donny Hathaway. But there is more to Lalah Hathaway than that. A trained pianist and vocalist, she is a graduate of the Berklee School of Music and her career has spanned two decades. She made her music debut in 1990 on Virgin Records with the self-titled album Lalah Hathaway. In 2008, Lalah released her 4th solo album Self Portrait, which garnered her first Grammy Award nomination for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance. 21 years after the release of her first LP, her career continues to thrive. In total her work includes multiple solo releases, guest collaborations and a steady stream of unforgettable live perfor-mances.

Ms. Hathaway has recorded and toured with several legendary acts including George Benson, Joe Sample, George Duke, Marcus Miller, Mary J. Blige, Kirk Whalum, Gerald Albright, David Sanborn, Carl Thomas, Angie Stone, Robert Glasper, Grover Washington, Esperanza Spalding, and Prince.

Jonathan ButlerBorn in Cape Town, Butler was the youngest of 12 children. He discovered a gift for music early in life and began singing and playing guitar at age seven. As a child, he traveled all over South Africa performing with a troupe of 100 children, getting a first hand look at the country’s disturbing dichotomy---devastating poverty and extreme affluence that existed under Apartheid.

Butler signed his first record deal as a teen and became the first black artist played on white South African stations. “That was 1974 and it was a song titled ‘Please Stay,’” Butler recalls of the historic tune, which won a Sarie Award, the South African equivalent of a Grammy. “Back then I was with an independent label called CCP Productions.”

Butler has toured the world with such acclaimed artists as Kirk Whalum, Dave Koz and Ruby Turner. He’s earned Grammy nominations and rave reviews in the jazz and R&B fields, but his gospel albums hold a special place in his heart. “I wrote ‘Falling In Love With Jesus’ and that opened the door for me to walk seamlessly into my ministry.”
