EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT! School has started.....and so haves our seminars! I am very excited to announce that after a brief sum-mer hiatus, we have kicked off our seminars for the year. We started with an exceptional seminar given by Judge Tommy Thompson with a look into the County Court. I would like to give a special thank you to The Getaway Deli for being our food sponsor for that seminar. Coming up on September 25, Attorney William Gladson will give us a look into Gun Law in the Courtroom. I know Shelly and Jeannie are working hard to plan another great year of legal education for us. Speaking of another great year, MCLSA is off and running with our fundraising events. On September 13 we are having a “Girls’ Night Out - Open House Fundraiser” featuring Glamour Snapshots, UndercoverWear, Amanda’s Cup of Beads, and Baked Greats of Ocala. Anyone is welcome, members or non-members but we are asking you to leave the little ones home for this event. On October 12, MCLSA will be hosting a Community Yard Sale. This event is geared towards helping us raise money for our holiday endeavors. Start cleaning out your garages and closets now. We will need everyone’s help with getting items to sell and people to sell-sell-sell those items. Please look for these flyers in this edition of The Legal Pad. Who will be this year’s Top Dog? Don’t forget to nominate your boss for our Boss of the Year Contest. Deadline for the nominations is September 3, so don’t delay and nominate your boss today! Did you know MCLSA gives a scholarship out every year? Scholarship forms and rules are in The Legal Pad and I ask that all of you pass at least one application along to someone. Education is a wonderful thing and being able to help provide it is priceless! MCLSA is not just all work. For play this year we have Family Fun Night on October 26. We will be hosting a family-oriented “Halloween Spooktacular”, featuring carnival games, costume contests, food, treats, and maybe a few tricks. Please join us for a “ghoulish” good time. FALSS just completed the 1QMM in St. Augustine. This meeting featured excellent seminars and the new mem-bership contest was introduced. The 2QMM will be held in Boynton Beach and is also a FALSS-hosted meeting. Please read the Chapter Liaison report for all the details. We have several events going on for the next couple of months and I look forward to seeing and working with you. I encourage all of you to “Take A Gamble on MCLSA”!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Did you have a great summer? Are you going to have an awesome fall? Of course you will! Life is good and don’t forget it. Remember that with fall comes the moving of the clock, football games, holidays that involve lots of baking, and SCHOOL. Yes, I said school. If you haven’t been caught in school traffic, you will, just wait. I would like to point out that we currently have 94 members. It would be wonderful if we had at least half of that number of members present at our monthly business meeting at the Elks Club. Take the time to
jot down on your calendar lunch with MCLSA on September 12, 2013, and check us out. We don’t bite. We excite! Make sure to ask me at the monthly semi-nars for your membership badge and certifi-cate. I will have them in my trusty notebook. Don’t be shy. Step up and show me your smile. The First Annual Spooktacular (Halloween) Event is being held at my home on Saturday, October 26, 2013. See the flyer in this issue for all the details. Remember to support your boss and nomi-nate him/her for Boss of the Year. See the flyer in this issue for all the details. Humor...
A doctor and a lawyer in two cars collided on a country road. The lawyer, seeing that the doctor was a little shaken up, helped him from the car and offered him a drink from
his hip flask. The doctor accepted and handed the flask back to the lawyer, who closed it and put it away. Aren’t you going to have a drink yourself?” asked the doctor. “Sure, after the police leave,” replied the attorney.

Holidays are upon us! I know we have many exciting things planned this holi-day season so we will be busier than ever. MCLSA’s family fun night will be held on October 26, 2013. Lela has graciously offered the use of her home as the setting for our “scary” Halloween “Spook’ Tackular”. If you have not al-ready done so, please contact me to volunteer to help plan or just give ideas for food, drinks and games. Also, please remember to bring a bag of candy to each monthly business meet-ing as we will need plenty of candy to stave off the little hobgoblins! I will be scheduling a committee meeting soon to iron out all the details and ask for volunteers to help bring our “scary” night to life. Stay tuned! The FALSS 2nd Quarterly Member-ship Meeting will be held in Boynton
Beach, Florida at the Marriott Court-yard on October 18 and 19. As al-ways, FALSS knows how to put on a party. So if you have not attended a meeting before, please join us and meet some wonderful people, par-take in the exciting educational op-portunities, attend the membership meeting and have a relaxing week-end at the beach. I look forward to the upcoming holiday season and all the opportuni-ties to give back to our community. I hope you all will join me in helping MCLSA represent the spirit of the season.

Hi MCLSA! I can’t believe that summer is al-most over and school has started up again. My niece, Meagan, started middle school this year. I was lucky enough to take her for orientation at Ft. King Middle School. She was so excited! It was nice to experience that new beginning through her eyes. With summer winding down and school starting, that also means the
SECRETARY’S REPORT
The deadline for submitting this bi-monthly report coincided with the start of a new school year for most of Marion County’s public and private schools. Face-book is full of pictures of happy faced kids dressed out in their new back-to-school clothes, lurking behind them are parents with huge smiles on their faces. The prior week’s paper had pictures and captions of college kids and parents unloading trunks full of dorm filling niceties. I have always loved this time of year. It’s a time of antici-pation, excitement, and trepidation. High School, College and Pro Football news and scores dominate the newspapers, airwaves and conversations. This year the conversa-tion that dominates the MCLSA circles is the talk about our upcoming “SPOOK
TACKULAR”. Scheduled for October 26, 2013 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Lela and Lee Prine have graciously agreed to allow this event to take place in their back yard. Our ever active group has planned a wonderful evening for all MCLSA members and their extended families. I urge all of you to come on out, meet and greet your fellow members and enjoy a wonderful fun filled evening. The FALSS 1st Quarter meeting held in St. Augustine was great. The seminars, Mur-der in the Moonlight and Pitfalls of Probate, were informative and well presented. The Ghost Tour was enhanced by Amy’s stash of instruments to detect the presence of ghosts. I never knew such things existed. The food and fellowship were great and I will never forget seven women crammed into a five passenger Buick. I’m looking forward to the 2nd Quarter meeting to be held in Boynton Beach October 18-19. I would suggest bring-ing bathing suits because it should still be beach weather in Boynton. MCLSA has plans for several fund raisers to boost our already flush treasury. This is great because we have several benevolent
projects in the works and the funds will be needed. I have written a check for $500.00 to the University of South Flor-ida student account of Tsigana Kubiszak. She is the 2012-2013 MCLSA scholar-ship winner. It is always a joy to write these checks to further the education of deserving students. Well, my report is done. Please read the entire “Legal Pad” for all the informa-tion MCLSA has to offer regarding up-coming seminars, fund raisers, social activities and FALSS information. Please patronize our Advertisers, their ad mon-ies are greatly appreciated.

PARLIAMENTARIAN’S REPORT
The FALSS 1QMM was held in our nation’s oldest city, St. Augustine, which is celebrating its 500th birthday. The meeting was hosted by FALSS and President, Lori Wilkinson, selected the theme “Reflect about FALSS.” We began at 8:00 a.m. Saturday morning with our first seminar, “Murder in the Moonlight”, presented by Howard "Skip" F. Cole, III . He gave us a look into the murder of a wife and shooting of her husband, the only witness, who claimed they were shot by a rob-ber. Of course after a long investigation and trail, a jury found the husband guilty and he will spend the rest of his life in prison. Our second seminar was entitled “Pitfalls in Probate and Guardianship and How to Avoid Them”. This seminar included a comical twist presented by Attorney Sara Caldwell. She talked to us about the common filing problems and how to fix them, along with fixing accounting mistakes. The membership meeting followed after lunch (which was yummy-yummy!!). FALSS reported having has 159 members, of which 14 are new members. We were also informed of the new membership contest for this year – "Re-Energize Yourself at a Florida Theme Park". With each new member you sponsor, you get a chance to win a prize each quarter. This will also enter you in the Annual
Meeting Grand Prize Contest Drawing! The more members you sponsor, the more times your name will be entered in the grand prize drawing. The Grand Prize winner will receive their choice of tickets to any Florida theme park (up to a $250 value). The winner for this Quar-ter was none other than our own Shelly Owen Heatherdale. Congrats, Shelly!! The optional event for this Quarter was called “Ghosts & Gravestones Frightseeing Tour by Trolley”. We all had a “howling” good time and thanks to Amy Phillips for bring her "ghost buster" equip-ment. The 2QMM is being held October 18-19 in Boynton Beach and is also a FALSS-hosted meeting. The seminar on Saturday is entitled "Challenging Issues in Today's Family Law Practice from I Do to I Don't Anymore". Florida Bar approval has been applied for with 4.0 CLER credits including 1.0 of ethics. Look for the registration forms in The Legal Pad. I hope to see all of you there.

When written in Chinese, the word 'crisis' is composed of two characters. One represents danger and the other represents opportunity.
~ John F. Kennedy While preparing for this year’s theme “Re-energize Yourself in FALSS,” I ran across this quote from President Kennedy. In-stead of panicking during a crisis, I attempt to challenge myself to use my talents to keep myself and others in my wake out of the pits.

This month’s Member Spotlight is on Isabelle Grenitz-Hutchins. Born in Brooklyn, NY and raised on Long Island (near the Belmont Racetrack), Isabelle graduated high school and attended Queens College. In 1973, she married and moved to Los Angeles, CA. Her legal career began in NYC doing bankruptcy, where she worked for the Vice President and Legal Counsel for CIT Financial Corporation. When she and her husband moved to California, she “stayed home for a while and ate everything in sight until I said no more staying home for me.” She got a job in the bankruptcy depart-ment of a large law firm there. Her most ‘exciting’ times were during her stint in California, thanks to the earthquakes and fires. While living in the foothills one morning, she and her hus-band heard a helicopter and thought the Russians were invad-ing, as they could not understand anything being said. Several min-utes later, a deputy came to the
house and told them to leave in 15 minutes. “I packed a suitcase and my husband packed a brown belt, a black belt, but no pants that needed any belt, of course. He also took seven pairs of socks!” That was the Monday prior to Thanksgiving. They removed them-selves to a hotel, and Isabelle re-turned to work while her husband went back to the house to water the roof, as many roofs in Southern California were shake (made of wood) and fast to catch fire and burn. “We got back home on Wednesday evening before Thanks-giving. We said a prayer for Thanks-giving dinner, with little interesting to eat.” When Isabelle’s husband became ill it was too hard to be 3,000 miles from family, so they relocated to Ocala in 1989, where she could stay home with him. Her father lived in Ft. Lauderdale and came up by Amtrak every month for a while to give her a break. Isabelle has been a member of both our local and state associations (the old and the new) since 1989. “Education was the main reason, as I was new to Florida.” She became FALSS board certified in 2005 in Probate. She has always been an active member of our state associa-tion, but since her retirement in 2005, she has become a very active
member at the local level, as well. Isabelle is also an expert on parliamentary procedure and keeps our sometimes raucous business meetings from turning into a red hot mess. Hee! She has also been a part of the Sunshine Committee, as well as advertising chair for The Legal Pad. She has also been a mem-ber of the International Associa-tion of Administrative Profession-als since 1983 and Legal Secre-taries International, Inc. since 2000. She is a nationally certified legal secretary specialist in Pro-bate. “I retired in 2005 and still enjoy all of the education MCLSA of-fers and continue to go to FALSS meetings where I have made friends from all over the state,” Isabelle writes. Isabelle says, “I love MCLSA!”, and we say, “Right back at ‘cha’, Isabelle!”
