    Are You Sabotaging Your

    Career?By Vicki Voisin, ACP

If you could foretell the future, you'd know if you'll be staying in your present job or looking for

another one down the road. Or maybe you don't have to be a psychic because almost everyone will be inthe job market at one time or another. When that happens, will your online presence sabotage your careermove?

Do you have friends on Facebook? Are you Twittering with your Tweeps? Are you connecting onLinkedIn? Have you made MySpace your space? Do you bare your thoughts on your blog? These (andother) social networking sites usually allow you to post as much information about yourself as you like...youreducation, work history, favorite music and books, political leanings, and religious preferences. You canupload pictures, post videos, join groups and causes and become a fan of many. There are also 'statusupdates' that offer information about how you're feeling right this moment.

You are, in essence, dropping clues right and left about yourself and you may be offering too much

information. Many companies (that includes law firms) now use social networking sites to screenprospective hires. They may also use them to check on the behavior of current employees. A simple entry of

a name in the Google search box can reveal all kinds of information...some of it may be embarrassing.

Social Networking isn't just about you. You really have little control over who sees your information. Yourcontacts have access to it. Their contacts have access. Those contacts have access. You can see how theweb widens.

How much should you reveal about yourself? That's the $64,000 question and depends on yourcircumstances. It would be best to err on the side of caution. It's probably not good to post the picture of youdancing on a table at Senor Frog's in Cancun. Does a recruiter need to know that you are 32, single,Catholic, have a mad crush on Hugh Jackman and would throw your Jimmy Choos at a political candidate ifgiven a chance? Probably not! You might also want to refrain from commenting about your boss and co-

    workers.

There are other things that are probably best kept to yourself:

Medica l informat ion Plans to quit your current job Your love life/sexual preferences Pol it ics and rel igion Salary/financial information Gossip Racially charged jokes and profanity Confidential work information

You might give this some thought: Remember the last time you had a conversation with someone,

perhaps a friend, family member or maybe a total stranger...and you found the conversation going

south when you were given way too much information? Perhaps you learned more than you needed toknow about the person's financial situation, their marital problems, or t heir last surgery. Your view of theperson was changed forever. The same thing can happen when you reveal too much information online butyou may not even know whose opinion you have influenced.

Your online presence is a virtual resume. Craft your profile very carefully so you reveal only positiveinformation. Don't use a screen name that gives a poor impression. Don't post pictures or videos youwouldn't want your mother to see. Delete any photos your friends might post that show you drinking andpartying. If any off-color comments are associated with your posts, delete t hem immediately. Choose yourFacebook friends and followers on Twitter wisely. You don't have to accept every request.

Your challenge: Do continue to enjoy your social networking. It's a great way to connect with friendsand colleagues. It's a fabulous networking tool. Just remember to exercise caution so that your socialnetworking presence will make you the person everyone will want to hire.

    HERES WHY

    PARALEGALS

    ATTEND THE IPA

    EDUCATION

    SEMINAR AND

    ANNIVERSARY

    DINNER

    BY: Caren Mansfield, a

    member of the Illinois

    Paralegal Association

    On November 4, 2010

    the Illinois Paralegal

    Association will hold its

    Annual Fall Education

    Conference. The IPA cel-

    ebrates its thirty eighth

    anniversary as an associa-

    tion with the Anniversary

    Luncheon. Featured

    speaker for the luncheon

    is Edward C. Carter,

    Assistant Attorney

    General. The purposes

    for the IPA hosting the

    Education Conference

    and Anniversary Dinner

    are several-fold.

    For many years the IPA

    has been hosting educa-

    tional conferences. With

    the passage of years the

    Education Conference has

    expanded to multi-track

    sessions of substantive

    continuing legal educa-

tion. In an effort to reach

as many paralegals aspossible who are practic-

    ing in different areas of

    the law the sessions range

    in topic from corporate

law to family law to real

estate law, just to name a

    few. Technology sessions

    are also provided so para-

    legals have an opportuni-

ty to be right on target

    with the newest and most

    recent software and hard-

    ware.

    The luncheon speaker

brings timely issues to theEducation Conference

    attendees. This year Mr.

    Carter will discuss his

work as a supervisor of a

    staff of prosecutors in the

    Attorney Generals office

    that works with federal

    and state law enforcement

    agencies in the investiga-

    tion and prosecution of

    economic crimes perpe-

    trated against Illinois citi-

    zens, business and state

    government.

    A reminder here. The

    IPA was formed to pro-

    mote communication

    between the paralegal

    profession, the legal pro-

    fession and other organi-

    zations as well as to

    encourage continuing

    legal education for parale-

    gals in their areas of

    respective specialties.

    Also, the IPA was formed

    to inform members of

    developments in the para-

    legal profession. The

    Education Conference

    and Anniversary

    Luncheon provides the

    IPA an opportunity to

engage in all of the pur-

    poses for which it was

    formed. The Education

    Conference allows mem-

    bers and non-members

    alike the prospect of cred-

    ible, often innovative con-

    tinuing legal education. It

    also allows paralegals to

    meet other paralegals and

    lawyers. Networking is of

    primary importance for

    paralegals. It allows for

    the exchange of new

    ideas, good old ideas, and

    a chance to make

    acquaintance with indi-

    viduals who one might

    not otherwise meet.

    The Anniversary

    Luncheon is a chance for

    paralegals to network,

    socialize and learn. The

    IPA makes this lunch

    event a time to recognize

    efforts by members on

behalf of the IPA and the

    profession.

There is still time to sign

    up and attend. Dont miss

    this opportunity to learn.

    Visit the IPA

    website at

    www.ipaonline.org for an

    Education Conference

    brochure. You can sign

    up online. Contact

    Yvonne at 815-462-4620
