Leeds Bradford Airport is bringing forward plans for an exciting new development at the airport. The scheme which is anchored by a new arrivals hall and immigration area will also include additional departure gates and extra seating for departing passengers. The development is being brought forward in line with the Airports ‘Route to 2030 Strategic Development Plan’ objective of creating a modern, attractive environment for our passengers. The proposals will provide the facilities, amenities and capacity for the Airport to handle 5 million passengers, a 25% increase on current passenger numbers. The new arrivals hall will be located to the east of the existing terminal building, adjacent to the airport lounges and departure gates 6,7 and 8. It will sit alongside the current apron and form a new focus for arriving passengers to the airport and improve the passenger experience. The proposal signals a major investment in to the airport from its new owners, and will provide the airport with the infrastructure to deliver an improved customer service and accommodate future growth. As well as providing additional jobs, the proposals will bring a fresh new face to the airport to act as a gateway for the City Region to the rest of the world, increase inward investment opportunities and increase the contribution the airport makes to the regional economy. Leeds Bradford Airport: Terminal Extension

The Need

Leeds Bradford Airport welcomed 4.08m passengers in 2017 and has an ambition to grow to 5m passengers by 2023 and 7m passengers by 2030. In order to achieve this, improvements are required to a broad range of terminal facilities and airside operations.

Phase 1 of the Airports investment strategy has already taken place with the refurbishment of the existing food and beverage offer in the main terminal, improvements to car parking, new snow clearing equipment, a rebrand of the Airport and additional lounge facilities. The terminal building is now nearing capacity however, and improvements are required to improve the customer experience for both existing passenger numbers and to accommodate future growth.

With this in mind, LBA is looking to bring forward Phase 2 of the investment strategy in the form of a new arrivals hall. The proposals are outlined on the following boards but will in essence address concerns expressed regarding the arrivals experience, by providing additional immigration and baggage reclaim capacity, as well as providing additional gate capacity for departing passengers.

Looking to 2020, Phase 3 of the investment strategy will see the refurbishment of the main terminal building to provide a larger central security area, and an expanded food and beverage offer. Phase 4 will then see an expansion in airside facilities such as additional aircraft stands, fuel farm facilities, taxiway improvements, etc.

As the airport approaches 5 m passengers, there will be a need to expand the terminal further to accommodate 7 m passengers. This will see an expansion of the terminal extension outlined in this consultation event, as well as an extended pier with additional departure gates and baggage reclaim facilities.
