In October 2001, Ledcor selected JD Edwards as the best solution to meet their needs for enterprise resource planning. Since then, Ledcor has experienced a significant level of growth that JD Edwards was capable of managing and scaling to.

Over the past 3 years, system and business utilization has continued to expand and that, in turn, increased demand on the software for new functionality and improved capabilities. As a result of this increased demand Ledcor undertook an upgrade assessment.

Upon completion of the upgrade assessment of JDE 8.12, several objectives were identified. The objectives were strongly supported by the three key drivers.

Delivering the Right Solution

In 2008, Ledcor decided to proceed with an upgrade to JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, release 8.12. The selection of an implementation partner was key to a successful upgrade project for Ledcor. A poor quality upgrade would ultimately lead to ongoing issues in training, problem resolution, bug fixes, user adoption and overall dissatisfaction among the business owners and end users.

Based on the size and scope of the upgrade project, it was evident that Ledcor’s project team would require assistance from a full service implementation partner who could provide project management, application, technical and database consulting, coupled with training and hardware sales and services.

In the fall of 2008, Ledcor selected Syntax based on the strengths demonstrated across all of the RFP requirements, and the project commenced in January of 2009. Syntax’s vast JD Edwards experience, proven Upgrade Methodology, and strong functional and technical resources provided Ledcor with the assurance of a successful project.

Syntax Application consulting services provided net change training, business process modeling support, integrated testing for existing applications as well as implementations of new JD Edwards modules. Technology consulting services consisted of technical upgrade installation & conversions, security re-design, high-availability implementation, infrastructure support and EnterpriseOne technology training.

The upgrade involved over 900 users, 1,200 menu items and 1,400 documented business processes. It was clear that the delivery of training would define the success of the project. As a result,Syntax was also engaged to prepare all EnterpriseOne end-user training materials using Oracle User Productivity Kit tools, providing strategy/content standards, UPK training, content development, deployment support and go-live monitoring.

Why UPK

Ledcor was looking for a solution that would allow for the delivery of high quality and consistent training content over a compressed timeframe. In addition to the training requirements for the upgrade project, Ledcor took this opportunity to also establish a long term strategy for the ongoing documentation of business process and training content using the User Productivity Kit (UPK).

The use of UPK allowed Ledcor to leverage pre-built content that documents best practices and could be easily customized to match Ledcor’s requirements. It allowed the company to deliver rich training and business process content across all JD Edwards. As new business processes are introduced via JD Edwards, UPK content is simultaneously developed to ensure rapid and consistent user acceptance.

Expected ROI

Using a proven Upgrade Methodology, Ledcor’s project team skillfully maneuvered their way through a well planned and executed upgrade project.

Contributors to the success of the project included the following:• a strong project team • an experienced, full service consulting team • proven project management both internally and from the consultant • constant cross functional and project wide communication • rigorous documentation and testing of over 850 business processes • the development and testing of 400 training documents & simulations using UPK • the delivery of training to 900 JD Edwards end users • a project delivered on time and on budget on June 15, 2009

When surveyed, Ledcor’s project team rated the upgrade a 100% success with project management, training and communication cited as the top three factors.

As a result of the upgrade, Ledcor has increased the utilization of existing JD Edwards application functionality, realizing improved execution of individual tasks and business processes. Ledcor also identified additional opportunities to improve processes through the utilization of JD Edwards. These will now be scheduled as post upgrade projects.

The upgrade proved to be timely, as demands on Ledcor’s system have increased in recent months. The team and the tools are noe able to execute requests more efficiently and effectively.
