THE WIDER WORLD THE FOOD CRISIS

For people to be hungry in the 21st century is neitherinevitable nor morally acceptable. The solution lies inpro-poor policies that prioritise the needs of small-holder farmers. We must tackle poverty, unfair trade

rules and climate change (OXFAM 2009).

    WE KNOW THAT

Food security underpins global security; Food trade is central toglobal trade; and agricultural development is the best route toachieving economic growth that reaches the rural poor andmost vulnerable in low income countries.

Agricultural development on its own is not enough. Fairtradeprovides the missing link: a just trade

Fairtrade in the context of the food security challenge

    Fairtrade strengthens smallholder economy

Emphasis on working with small farmers. In several products

    exclusively.

Grow their own food next to export crops (as a rule)

Market access against fair prices helps producers livelihoods(and keeping their land)

Earned money is spent locally to stimulate that economy

Labour intensive way of working source of income for many,

often less demanding on the environment
