Principal’s Message Student were welcomed back to full time learning with an archway of blue and white balloons. It was great to see all the smiling faces and the willingness of our students to engage in class. Staff and students alike have expressed how happy they are to be back onsite, in classrooms and re-engaging with each other and their class. Remote learning has certainly not been straightforward, but I could not be prouder of how our teachers, support staff, students and families responded to the challenge. I would like to extend my gratitude to parents and carers for their understanding and patience as teachers retake the reins of your child’s education. We have a real focus on literacy and numeracy skills at the moment in each classes. Today you will receive a new guide to NSW students returning to face-to-face learning which was updated on July 11 by the NSW Department of Education. There are some minor changes till the end of term but a more ‘normal return’ to schooling next term with some restrictions still in place. Staff will reflect on these new guidelines and a more detailed update will be published to parents about how we will implement these at Berkeley Public School closer to the end of term.

Virtual Assembly On Wednesday our first assembly was held via video to each class in the school. This was to recognise all the great work being done by students. A video was taken of our school leaders reading out the names of award recipients. Each class teacher would then hand out the physical award to the students in their class. A big shout out to Ms Davies and Ms Newton who did a great job taking the footage and editing this. Ms Newton even made a number of cartoons around our PBL focus for the next 2 weeks which kept the student really engaged. Many thanks for the hours taken to produce this.

Semester 1 Reports In line with advice from the NSW Department of Education, our school reports for Term 1 and 2, 2020 have been adjusted to cater for students learning from school and at home. This report will not grade student achievement using the A-E scale as in previous reports. The teacher’s comments will focus on English and mathematics as well as learning that students have undertaken in other Key Learning Areas. The report will also provide information about student attendance, their commitment to learning and identify the next steps in learning. At the moment we are still having some technical issues formatting the new report but hope they will be distributed sometime in Education Week (Week 3 next Term).

Opportunity Class Changes to the opportunity class placement process for 2020 Year 4 students The 2021 Year 5 opportunity class placement process was put on hold in April 2020 due to COVID-19. We now have a revised and simplified timeline for the OC placement process to ensure that students and families can have certainty about their placement as soon as possible. The changes include:

• A new date for online applications

• Parents must register and apply between 9 June 2020 and 26 June 2020

• Late applications cannot be accepted

• A new test date - Wednesday 16 September 2020 To ensure fair and consistent assessment of students across New South Wales, students will be offered places based only on their test results this year – there will be no school assessment scores. There will also be no opportunity for appeals given the tight time frames. For further detailed information and access to the online application please visit: https://education.nsw.gov.au/public-schools/selective-high-schools-and-opportunity-classes/year-5 Kind regards Wayne Osborne Principal

Three actions you can take to help manage the spread

1. Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly. 2. Sneeze into your elbow or a tissue, disposing of the tissue straight away and then washing your hands. 3. Stay home if you are unwell and in schools, send home staff or students who show signs of

being unwell through the day.

Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week at Berkeley Public School

In Week 5 and 6, students at Berkeley Public School celebrated National Sorry Day and National Reconciliation Week.

National Sorry Day

National Sorry Day is held on 26 May every year to remember and recognise all those who were affected by and continue to be affected by the ‘Stolen Generations’. Sorry Day is celebrated in Australia as a time to remember the past actions of our Government and to say sorry. It is also a day of healing for the Stolen Generations, their families and communities.

Following the whole class discussion, students in Year 3-6 watched Kevin Rudd’s Sorry speech. The text ‘Sorry Day’ by Coral Vass, was read to Year 3-6 students whereas a local dreaming story from this area was read to students in Kindergarten and Stage 1. Students then decorated a blank hand with words, phrases and colours to represent their understanding of National Sorry Day.

National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is celebrated each year from 27 May to 3 June. It is a time to celebrate and build on positive and respectful relationships and connections between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and Non-Indigenous people.

Students in all stages participated in a discussion around this year’s theme, ‘In This Together’ and what that means to them and the wider Australian community. Year 3-6 students participated in conversations around the two significant dates for Reconciliation Week and how these events have shaped Australia today. Lastly, students from all stages decorated two blank hands (shaking) with words, phrases and colours to represent their understanding of National Reconciliation Week.

Below are some photos of students acknowledging these important events. Amber Quintal Teacher

Reminder – Sick Students Students who are sick, however mild, are not to attend school. Contact the office and we will record the absence as ‘sick’. This does mean that we will contact you if your child presents as sick to the office during the day. Given the current situation all cases will be deemed genuine. Please ensure your contact details are up to date.

Attendance Be ‘ON TIME’ to get a great start!

• Students have a chance to unpack their belongings and to play with their friends.

• Students are ready to start school with the class without being rushed or feeling frustrated. • They are present to hear important morning announcements and the day’s routine. • Teachers and students who have already begun work are not interrupted.

• Students get into the habit of punctuality, which is important in all aspects of life.

• Arriving 20 minutes late to school each day, is the equivalent of missing 11 school days in a year.

Birthday Treats Unfortunately, in the times we are living in at the moment, cakes and birthday treats are not permitted to be sent to school to celebrate a child’s birthday. Guidelines from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) have advised that sharing of food or drink, and the use of communal water bubblers is prohibited to prevent transmission of disease in schools.

Canteen, Uniform Shop and Breakfast Club Both the canteen and uniform shop are operating as normal. The uniform shop is open Tuesday and Friday morning between 8.45 and 9.15am and entry is via the gate on George Street near the new bus shelter. Breakfast Club is still suspended.

Pedestrian Crossing Parents and students please use the supervised crossings rather than using the area closer to the roundabout. Set an example for all regarding safety around our school.

Garden News As we returned to school the weather has cooled down a little so there are lots of new things growing in the garden. The summer fruits and vegetables like watermelons, cucumbers, zucchini and figs have been replaced with things that like it a little cooler – spinach, broccoli, cauliflower and pumpkin. There has still been plenty of sun to keep our passionfruit vine happy and healthy which is great to see. We also have some new native plants that should be very colourful and attract plenty of birds. There are lots of jobs for students to do during their kitchen/garden lessons and lunchtime Grub Club so I am looking forward to everyone returning to look after our wonderful garden at Berkeley Public School. THE IMPACT OF PRIVACY LAW ON THE INFORMATION PARENTS CAN BE PROVIDED ABOUT OTHER PARENT’S CHILDREN

Our school holds information about our students. Some of this information is highly sensitive.

The way this information is collected, used, disclosed and secured by our school is subject to NSW legislation including the Privacy and Personal Information Protection Act 1998, Health Records and Information Protection Act 2002 and the Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998.

These laws limit the circumstances in which your child’s information can be disclosed to other parents. They also limit the circumstances in which you can be provided with information about action the school has taken in relation to other people’s children.

This means, for example, you may not be provided with complete details of the action the school has taken in relation to a student who has engaged in unacceptable behaviour that has impacted on your child.

You should not assume that no action has been taken because you cannot be provided with information about what the school has done to deal with an issue relating to your child’s interaction with another student.

Our school takes inappropriate behaviour from students very seriously and responds to that behaviour consistent with the school’s student discipline and welfare procedures.
