History
http://www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk/research/research-guides/thomas-ferens.aspx
Thomas Ferens is an important person for the city of Hull. This is because although he wasn’t born in Hull, he came to Hull to work at what was Reckitt and Sons, and stayed here. He decided to give a percentage of his wages to help the city of Hull, even when he was just a clerk. As his wages increased so did the amount of money he donated to good causes. He wanted to help the people of Hull and so he gave money to help build the Ferens Art Gallery (above). He wanted to help artists to show their work and to help the people of Hull enjoy looking at the art for free.
19
History
http://www.hullhistorycentre.org.uk/research/research-guides/thomas-ferens.aspx
He also helped students by giving money to buy and build the University of Hull.
He helped the people of Hull to have a green space to enjoy by donating money to help build the boating lake at East Park which is a large park that the people of Hull can enjoy for free.
He also helped the elderly providing funding for twelve almshouses, known as the 'Ferens Rest Homes' for elderly people. When he died, he left his huge house on Holderness Road to help the elderly and it is still a residential home today.
