Adult Education Mental Health Research 2015—2017
In 2015 sixty local authorities in England began a research project to test whether short, part-time community learning courses in adult education settings can help people develop strategies to manage mild to moderate mental ill health, specifically anxiety, depression and sleep disorders. This research is funded through the £20 million Department for Education (DfE) initiative announced in the 2014 Autumn Statement. For more information visit mhfe.org.uk/content/CLMHP-local-offer-info.
Learning in mind is an established programme of short courses designed to help people improve their mood and general wellbeing. Each eligible learner can enrol on one free course that will offer opportunities to build confidence, feel more in control, learn from others, improve skills and abilities, and meet new people. For more information please call 020 8550 2398.
Find out about our wide range of fun, short, ‘Learning in mind’ courses and
activities available to you across Redbridge. We’re working in partnership with
organisations to help support people’s mental health and wellbeing.
We are delighted to welcome you to the second year of
our Learning in mind programme. Evidence suggests that
adult learning can improve mood, reduce depression and
improve wellbeing. With 1 in 4 people
likely to have mental ill health in any
year these courses can really make a
difference to people’s lives.
Redbridge Institute is a friendly,
inclusive and enjoyable place to
learn. We look forward to welcoming
and supporting you on your journey.

Choosing the right course
The courses for Learning in mind are designed to help anyone who is looking for
ways to improve their mood, health and general wellbeing. Before you choose your
course, take a moment to think about how you have felt over the past two weeks and
work through the self-assessment guide below.
How do you feel? No, not at all Some of the time
Most of the time
All the time
1. I feel optimistic about my future
2. I’ve been feeling useful
3. I’ve been feeling relaxed
4. I’ve been dealing with problems well
5. I’ve been able to make up my own mind
Signs of Anxiety No, not at all Some of the time

Please remember this is only a guide and if you are concerned by your results
or the way you are feeling, please contact your GP or the Redbridge IAPT
Service on 0300 555 1220 for further support, information and guidance.
Choosing the right course
Once you have completed the self-assessment guide, look at how many times you
have ticked the same colour. This will guide you towards the most suitable course for
you right now.
If you have ticked mostly green, you already have some confidence
in social settings, and have gained awareness and understanding of
how you feel and what makes you happy. Taking the next step could lead to increased periods of ’good times’.
Any of our courses will help to increase your wellbeing but you could also think about
trying new courses that would challenge you, encourage you to think about new ideas
and explore new ways of coping with daily life.
If you have ticked mostly purple, any of our creative expression, arts
and crafts and/or physical activity courses will all help to improve your
wellbeing.
Also you could think about any of our courses which explore self-help
methods as these will give you techniques to change the way you feel, think and
behave.
If you have ticked mostly blue, any of our creative expression, arts
and crafts and/or physical activity courses will all help to improve your
wellbeing by providing an opportunity to talk about feelings and
emotions in a safe environment without being the main focus of the
course.
These courses will encourage wellbeing by giving you some ’time out’, teaching you
some new skills and helping to increase your confidence in social settings.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I have to disclose details of
my medical history?
No. Learning in mind is a research
project funded by the Department for
Education which aims to test whether
adult education courses can have a
positive impact on people’s mood and

anything about your previous medical
history. All answers are treated in the
strictest confidence and should you
not meet eligibility criteria for any
reason, you will be offered
information, advice and guidance on
alternative options.
Do you have childcare facilities?

NHS Five Steps to
Mental Wellbeing
What are the NHS five steps to wellbeing?
There is lots of evidence suggesting that there are five steps you can take to improve your mental wellbeing. If you give them a try, you may feel happier, more positive and able to get the most from your life.
connect – connect with the people around you: your family, friends,
colleagues and neighbours. Spend time developing these
relationships. Why not try our Pottery for Beginners or enrol on
our Colour Me Happy course?
be active – you don't have to go to the gym. Take a walk, go cycling
or play a game of football. Find the activity that you enjoy and make it
a part of your life. Why not try our Yoga or Pilates courses, or
enrol on our Gardening in mind course?
keep learning – learning new skills can give you a sense of
achievement and new confidence. Why not try our Positive
Psychology course?
give to others – even the smallest act can count, whether it's a
smile, a thank you or a kind word. Larger acts, such as volunteering
at your local community centre, can improve your mental wellbeing
and help you build new social networks. Why not apply to be a
Learning in mind volunteer?
