Before you start your course, we’ll assess your prior knowledge of German in a placement test. Our course groups are international, so you’ll be speaking German right from the very fi rst lesson.

LESSONSOur instruction is full of variety and based on communicative methods. You’ll practice speaking, listening, reading and writing in realistic situa-tions and with authentic texts. The course contents are up-to-date and based on an intercultural approach. With topics, projects and research centered around life in Germany, you’ll explore German culture and get to know the course location.

THE COURSE SYSTEMOur course system is based on the six levels of the Common European Reference Framework for Languages (CERF). As a result, the language skills that you acquire in our courses can be objectively assessed and compared against international standards. The course system is con-sistent and transparent worldwide. After completing a course, you have complete fl exibility to continue learning at a Goethe-Institut in Ger-many or another country, or to enrol for one of our online courses.

The media resource centers at the Goethe-Instituts in Germany: Here you can learn, do research, engage in discussions, prepare for classes or study for exams – according to your individual needs. However, this is also a place where you can relax, read a newspaper or con-verse with other course participants. This makes learning German even more fun. Our media resource centers have four zones:

LEARNING ZONEThe Learning Zone is intended for quiet study. Here you can work by yourself and focus on your learning goals. There are also com-puters for looking up information or searching for extra materials.

COMMUNICATION ZONEThis zone is intended for communicative activities. It is ideal for discussions, group work, practicing with learning partners, and other shared learning activities.

INFORMATION ZONEFor help using the media resource center, details about activities at the institute, or information about the culture and leisure programs, the Information Zone is the place to go. You can also get advice here on self-learning materials or support in using media or other resources. You’ll fi nd information about Germany, current events and new books. Here we also display projects by course participants.

Learning a new language is a very good thing. But the experience is greatly enhanced when you also get to know the country where the language is spoken. That’s why, as well as language training, we offer an exciting range of activities outside the classroom. You’ll get to know the city where you’re learning from all sides while experiencing culture, sports and fun with your classmates.

NEW EXPERIENCES EVERY DAYDuring the week we generally offer events and programs every day. Our city walks will help you to fi nd your way around, while special thematic tours provide insights into interesting aspects of local life and history. You will also have a chance to visit institutions, companies or universities to learn about the economy, education and society at your location.

SPORTSWhenever possible – subject to the group’s interests – we will organize sporting activities for you. Depending on the season, you will also be able to attend live sports events.

WEEKEND EXCURSIONWe organize weekend daytrips for our classes. You can explore the landscapes and natural surroundings of the region on hikes, and visit castles and other high-lights on sightseeing excursions. On most of these outings you will have the chance to take a tour and enjoy a meal with the group. Our extracurricular programs also include one-day trips to interesting nearby cities.

THE BEETHOVEN CITY ON THE RHINE

Ludwig van Beethoven was born in Bonn in 1770 in a house that is now just one of the city’s many museums. An annual international music festival here also bears the great composer’s name.

The University of Bonn is one of the largest and most prestigious in Germany. Those studying there, along with the many tourists from Germany and abroad, enjoy the lively theater scene. Another big attraction is the Bonn Summer Festival, which features enchanting outdoor concerts. A boat trip on the Rhine is a wonderful way to see the Rhine valley, a world cultural heritage site, with its many castles and hillside vineyards, and the famous Loreley.

BREMENTHE LITTLE STATE

The “Free Hanseatic City of Bremen” is Germany’s smallest federal state and its 10th-largest city. In recent years this traditional over-seas trading and shipbuilding city has become an important center for aerospace engineering and the sciences. The Technology Park near the University of Bremen has gained wide renown.

But Bremen has many other claims to fame, such as the medieval city center, Hanseatic brickwork architecture, the ‘Town Musicians of Bremen’, and its distinctive beer. In 2004 the imposing Bremen city hall and the Roland Statue were designated as UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites.

Frankfurt, the site of the world-famous Frankfurt Book Fair, has a long tradition of forging strong links between culture and commerce. It is home to 190 publishing houses as well as the headquarters of the European Central Bank and the interna-tionally prominent Frankfurt Stock Exchange.

Germany’s southernmost big city has a wealth of cultural offerings, with eight municipal theaters, cinemas, libraries, numerous museums and galleries competing for visitors. The famous college of music, the

Schwäbisch Hall brings history to life: The historical center of this former Free Imperial City with a 1000-year history is replete with half-timbered houses from the late Middle Ages.

Schwäbisch Hall is considered the most important regional hub between Stuttgart and Nuremberg. Key factors in the local economy of the town, which has a population of 37,000, are the insurance indus-try, mechanical engineering and trade. Culture is everywhere in Vienna. The historic city center has been designated a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. You learn in a group for approximately eight weeks. There are four possible starting dates per year in Freiburg and six in Berlin.

This will enable you to develop your language skills and combine any number of courses to create a systematic language-learning program. At the start of your course we will ask you about your individual learning goals and follow up with ongoing support during the learning process. This results in tight integration of the classroom lessons, self-study activities and practice. At all levels you also have the option of taking one of our examinations, which are recognized around the world.

In the Intensive 4 Plus courses you will receive intensive group instruction in German in the morning. In the afternoon you will then practice the new material in a practice program prepared by your teachers. This will include vocabulary, structures and contents from the morning sessions involving a variety of approaches such as multi-media resources and creative activities. You may also be sent out into the town with special language assignments or just work on your own personal learning objectives. You will have the direct support of an experienced teacher who will provide practical learning tips and corrections.

Our Heidelberg Summer Course will sweep you away to one of Germany’s most beautiful cities. In this course you’ll combine an intensive German course in the mornings with an extracurricular and cultural program offering lots of variety. Guided excursions to the Neckar valley, Rothenburg or Würzburg, daytrips to the Pfalz region, the Imperial Cathedral in Speyer and the excellent vineyards of the region are included. The course takes place in the fully equipped conference rooms of the Chester Convention Center.

In the immediately adjacent four-star Chester Hotel, we have reserved a double room for individual use for you with breakfast. Enrollment is handled through the Goethe-Institut Mannheim.

Combine your language-learning holiday with a trip to Schwäbisch Hall, an enchant-ing city with a medieval feel in one of Germany’s most beautiful regions. In the company of course participants from all over the world, you’ll get to know Germany and its people while experiencing the many facets of this country. When planning the course, we take into account your requests for special topics and include your learn-ing objectives.

This course is designed for participants in and around the 50+ age bracket. The lessons take place in the morning. In the afternoon you’ll meet for various activities such as walks with the group, hikes, tours and museum visits. Of course you’ll have the opportunity to make your own plans as well. In the evenings we’ll arrange vari-ous activities such as attending the theater or concerts, movie nights, wine tastings and get-togethers with Germans. On the weekend we’ll go on a daytrip with you.

Our small-group SuperIntensive 2 program offers all-day language training at a high level of learning intensity and efficiency. The Superintensive courses will get you to your language-learning goals very quickly. With the daily practice opportunities you’ll be expressing yourself better in German within a short time.

You will be part of an active, highly motivated group with an average of six and a maximum of 10 participants. The lessons are geared towards real-world usability and reflect important intercultural aspects of communication.

We have integrated phases of individual learning and practice into the course program, with your personal learning process supported by our experienced teaching teams.

For advanced learners who wish to prepare for a Goethe-Zertifi kat exam and already have language skills at the desired exam level.

Learners will get to know the examination structure on the basis of examples and simulations of the various sections while practicing techniques/strategies.

At the institute, you will learn in modern, well-equipped classrooms and will have full access to a media resource center, including an extensive collection of DaF practice materials.

EXAM PRACTICE

Are you planning to attend college or university in Germany? First you will have to provide proof of German language skills. In our preparation courses you will receive instruction from specialized teachers as well as individual advice and support. You’ll become familiar with the TestDaF or Goethe-Zertifi kat C2 exam, practice the question types in all sections of the exam, and improve your language skills.
