COMMUNI-K LEARNING, FAITH & LEADERSHIP MARCH 2016 A Kennedy Catholic Lancer Publication www.kennedyhs.org 140S 140th Street, Burien WA 98168 Kennedy Catholic High School PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE I was recently asked to speak on behalf of Fathers at the annual Father/Daughter Dinner Dance. Always an honor, I humbly accepted, not because of my amazing wisdom and understanding. Quite the contrary, I am learning from my daughters every day. It is more about discovering the very essence of what that relationship can become if only I open my eyes and turn up the hearing. This was my opening remarks and prayer. Good evening, Dads, close your eyes and describe the dress that your daughter is wearing. Now, describe the way her hair is worn. Open your eyes. How did you do? Daughters, think of the most amazing time you had with your dad. Dads, try and guess which amazing time it was. When I think of my three daughters, 26, 14 and 13, I often see them as toddlers, at birthday parties, soccer games and helping with algebra homework. How often, I overlook the amazing beauty, talents and gifts each of them have! Just yesterday, I discovered the importance of eyebrows. Daughters, your dads are probably not aware of the amazing times you’ve shared. It is not that we don’t care or are, by nature, oblivious. We just get busy. So, you have to demand our attention and give us permission to notice, especially now! Tonight is a date night for the two of you. Time to gather in prayer, discuss what connects you with each other, to reminisce and have fun. For Mykelanne, Lara and Catherine, date night with Dad by themselves means undivided attention, time for important questions or answers to challenging situations, or opportunities for Dad to learn more about the importance of eyebrows. Good and gracious God, you have given to us fathers, evidence of your love for us, those beautiful examples of fatherhood. Dads should be so lucky. Thank you for the gift of fathers, the protector, the listener, for taking the time to be present to me. Let this relationship grow tonight, with your Holy Spirit in the middle, in the form of love, wisdom, gentleness and a forgiveness of our lame efforts to dance. The next day, I had a sophomore girl come up to me and share with me that this was one of the most amazing times she has ever spent with her father. “He [her dad] got really emotional when he couldn’t guess my amazing moment with him. It was having breakfast at IHOP, just the two of us, after Mass, when my mom was home with a cold. It was a little thing, but a big thing to me because it was the first time we ever talked about anything but ‘how was your day.” Dads, look for ways to engage your daughter; regardless of their age. This fatherly moment inspires amazing memories. Daughters, demand time with your dad, alone. Ask him the tough questions or simply, enjoy strawberry waffles together. PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEI was recently asked to speak on behalf of Fathers at the annual Father/Daughter Dinner Dance. Always an honor, I humbly accepted, not because of my amazing wisdom and understanding. Quite the contrary, I am learning from my daughters every day. It is more about discovering the very essence of what that relationship can become if only I open my eyes and turn up the hearing. This was my opening remarks and prayer.

Good evening,

Dads, close your eyes and describe the dress that your daughter is wearing.

PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGEThis week I had the honor to sit on a faculty panel for the final ISLE presentations. Our seniors completed the presentation as the culmination of the project. Over the course of the year I have been getting to know the students in academics, sports, performing and fine arts activities, dances and retreats. This panel provided me the opportunity to meet them in an entirely different way.

I have always been impressed by the caliber of our students, but the presentations blew me away! Not only were the presentations professional, academically and technically sound, but they were meaningful! As the seniors shared the story of their service projects, the depth of their experiences was evident. I think, to some extent, some of the students may have entered into the ISLE project as just something to complete and checkoff for graduation. But as they shared their service journey, and connected their learning to the Catholic Social Teachings, I could tell that the experience had a direct and dramatic impact on their faith. Several expressed surprise

at how much the service actually impacted them, several gained a deeper understanding of the world around them. All of them experienced growth in faith and a desire to continue to serve their neighbors.

I am so proud that we offer the ISLE project opportunity to our students. We are truly living our mission of graduating leaders following Christ.

ADMISSION’S MESSAGEIt is easy to find inspiration when walking through the halls of Kennedy Catholic High School. There is a deep sense of school spirit and pride, which is a direct result of the hard work and passion of our faculty, staff and student body. Our students work with purpose to create an atmosphere that includes everyone. Their common theme: communication, intentionality, participation and follow-through. All are honored to be part of the Lancer Nation.

We will be joined by an outstanding and diverse group of students that make up the new freshman class. It is an exciting time! The pursuit of academic excellence is a hallmark of Kennedy Catholic and our staff is committed to the students entrusted to their care. Teachers excel as champions of academics, yet they are also advisors, scholars, artists and mentors. It is that direct mentorship that plants the seed of leadership in each and every student walking these halls. The gift of a Kennedy Catholic education is priceless.

We are excited to welcome the Class of 2020 to our Lancer family - these young adults have chosen a school that will empower them, motivate them and guide them to explore their passions and achieve their dreams.

Laissez les bon temps rouler! Even though Mardi Gras was early this year (February 9), that didn’t stop the French students from celebrating it. Each level of French learned something different about Mardi Gras / Carnaval history and customs throughout the French-speaking world over the course of two weeks. The French 1 students created presentations about Mardi Gras / Carnaval in order to teach their classmates the local customs in Paris, Nice, Haiti, Martinique, Trinidad & Tobago, Mobile (Alabama), and French Guiana. The French 2 students focused on the Winter Carnaval in Quebec – a

completely different experience than what one would expect in New Orleans. The French 3 students learned about the exportation of the Acadians from Canada (Le Grand Dérangement), their transition over time to become the Cajuns of Louisiana, and today’s influence of French on Cajun life. All of the classes watched videos of the celebrations and created appropriate projects: masks, snowmen, crowns, and jesters. In addition, the students were able to celebrate with food – everyone’s favorite! The students experienced everything from croissants and crêpes to gumbo and king cake. It’s fair to say a good time was had by all! Joyeux Carnaval!

Elementary Band Program Band members throughout the nine elementary schools that make up the Kennedy Catholic Elementary Band Program are VERY engaged focusing on the fundamentals of music. Fifth graders will soon enter into the world of “real” concert band music. This is in preparation for the Band Festival and individual school spring concerts. The older students are playing – saying – or identifying complex rhythms - a wonderful approach to ear training. Air Support is another “hot topic” in the classroom. The Chromatic Scale will be the next area of learning.

2016 Honor Band has been diligently rehearsing twice a month at the high school and it promises to be another outstanding group!

BOYS BASKETBALL HEAD TO STATEOur boys basketball team had a great season and a tremendous post season! Thank you to the entire community who fulfilled a wide range of valuable roles which made this experience special and memorable. Congrats to Head Coach Don Hoffman, his staff and the players. They represented who Lancers are very, very well! -Annette J. Duvall, Athletic Director

Highline Times: Lancers Narrowly Miss State Final by Tim Clinton:

Kennedy Catholic proved to be tough in the semifinals, coming within a heartbeat of a win and the state championship game. The Lancers did sink what would have been the winning shot -- right after the final buzzer. Kennedy Catholic had possession of the ball trailing O’Dea by a 61-60 score, and worked it to Keannu Royster through a frenzy.

Royster took a shot with time running out, only to have it partially blocked by O’Dea’s Race Porter. The deflected ball went to Matthew Sasonoff of the Lancers just to the right of the basket and he quickly popped it into the net. But the shot was waved off by the nearest official as coming too late and it was the Fighting Irish who came away with the victory.

“We were one tenth of a second late or we would have won the game,” said Kennedy Catholic head coach Don Hoffman. “The kids played hard. Both teams played their guts out.” O’Dea head coach Jason Kerr agreed. “You had two teams out there battling,” he said. “The Kennedy Catholic kids played their tails off. They kept coming at you. They never gave up.”

We have great committees already hard at work for the Classes of 1976, 1986, & 1996 but we are still seeking volunteers for 2006!

Student Reflection:“I absolutely loved the Freshman Retreat. On the first day of the retreat, I thought it might be boring and that we wouldn’t do anything, but it was extremely fun. The next day was awesome. I loved the service at the White Center Food Bank, Mass, and the Friday night games. The final day we had a dismissal and an overview. It was really fun to see all of the things that everyone did throughout the retreat. I loved my leaders and they helped me have an awesome experience. This retreat helped me feel that the ‘Lancer Family’ is not just a slogan, but an actual family.” -Jovial C.

Rotary Students of the MonthCongratulations to Joseph L ‘16 and Christine K ‘16, the February Rotary Students of the Month for the Burien-White Center Rotary Club. Joseph and Christine were honored at the February Rotary luncheon.
