Dragons

Year 6 Session 2/2

Hi Year 6,

This week in Reading and Writing, we will be focusing on the mythical creatures, known as dragons. We will use our creative minds to identify the features of dragons and how those features help dragons to survive and strive in their worlds. This is the 2nd session, so make sure you try Session 1 first.

LO: to use my comprehension skills

E – Which word is closest in meaning to ascend?

a) fall

b) rise

c) action

R – Where is the ship?

I – What do you think the man is painting?

The man might be painting….because….

C - How has the artist made the dragon-led ship stand out?

You will find the answers at the end of the document.

You will need . . .

Something to draw on (an exercise book or some plane paper)

Something to write with – any pen or pencil will do.

Pre-do: Vocabulary Task

Read this text and then answer the questions.

Into the night sky, the dragon-led ship ascended. At the prow, a dozen dragons beat their wings, dragging the ship behind them. Higher and higher they flew until the lights of the homes below mirrored the stars above.

Leonard had dreamed of this night, this adventure, all his life. From his perspective, the fully-grown dragons’ awesomeness could be appreciated: their golden skin shimmered in the moonlight creating an opalescent glow. Their vast wings thrashed and with every flap, the iron chains around their bodies chimed. Each short snout pointed in the same destination.

Alongside the ship, little Leonard dreamed of the day he would become a great, strong dragon and join his brothers and sisters on their journey. He longed to lead the sky-craft on its voyage, through the sky. For now, he was happy to fly beside the small, wooden ship for his time would come.

The answers are at end.

Day 2 Writing task

You will need . . .

Something to draw on (an exercise book or some plane paper)

You may want something to write with – any pen or pencil will do.

The dragons in Leonard’s Adventure were extremely helpful and good at their job, pulling the air-ship through the sky. Their physical features (the way they looked) helped them to do their job.

I wonder what other jobs dragons could help us do.

Perhaps miniature dragons could help us find items we drop down the side of the sofa.

Maybe your dragon would fly you around while you read. It would be quieter to read way up in the sky!

Last time, we described dragons and you may have drawn your own dragon and added descriptions.

Today, why not try writing a list of helpful jobs your dragon could do or tell someone in your family.

You may even include how it uses its physical features to help it do its jobs.

Here are some examples:

Have a go at writing or telling a family member how your dragon can use its features to be helpful. If you did not draw a dragon yesterday, draw one today or use this picture.

ANSWERS: to use my comprehension skills

d) The word is ascend (say: a-send)

e) Ascend means rise (b)

r) In the sky – the moon is visible

i) As always, this is up for interpretation but as long as you have used the image to justify (back up) your idea, you are on the right track. Ideas could include: he is painting a map of the world below because in the picture, he is up high. The man is painting the night sky because it is night time in the image.

c) The author has made the ship stand out by making the background (sky) dark blue and has made the ship and dragons lighter in colour. Some of you may also have realised that the colours used are contrasting (and on opposite sides of the colour wheel). Artist use contrasting colours to make certain items in the picture the focus.
