Make lovely patchwork quilts and bags

The sense of achievement is incredible. I cant believe I made these beautiful things!

“I’ve never had so much fun making things that are not just useful but truly beautiful too. By the end of the full day workshop I’d made a unique bag and am planning to make a patchwork quilt as my next project. Its such fun and Karen is so patient, it doesn’t seem like a class.”

Karen runs weekly patchwork classes for all abilities from September to April. She also runs full day workshops on selected Saturdays through the year. Her shop sells patchwork fabrics, patterns and notions.

world has opened up. We covered

so many aspects, like understanding

choosing fabrics and learned so many different

sewing techniques. There's so much I

can do now."

Kate removed the whole mystique around sewing, now it’s a joy, not a choreA textile artist, Kate offers a range of sewing classes and workshops for adults and children from the age of ten. Make felt accessories and decorations

Jacki says the only limit is your imagination, I ended up taking workshop after workshop to increase my range of skills

“Until I came to Jacki’s workshops I didn’t realise how many things you can make with felt. In just one session we learned all about the various wools to use and how to add surface colour and texture with decorative fi bres. So far I’ve made really professional beret, hats, wall hangings, table mats, scarves and bags.”

Jacki Sleator teaches felt-making to adults and children at private venues and art centres throughout Northern Ireland. Workshops can be adapted for beginners or those with experience.

Revamp your own furniture and make matching accessories

Emma and Joanne really helped ignite our inner creativity.

It’s amazing how you can transform

tired pieces of furniture into unique

masterpieces. We joined workshops in crafting, sewing

and painting and were soon creating fabulous cushions

and lampshades and revitalising

furniture with stylish upholstery and special paint

techniques.

How to spin yarn

Now I use the yarn I’ve spun myself for everything I knit or crochet.

“The countryside of Ulster was once full of yarn spinners, the basis of our world beating linen industry, so it felt like we were connecting to our heritage, learning to spin yarn with Janine. In a surprisingly short time we learned all about teasing, carding and using a spinning wheel and drop spindle.”

Based in Omagh, Janine offers classes to small groups and individuals. If you have your own spinning wheel, bring it along.

Make exquisite jewellery

Carol taught us all the basic

techniques of jewellery making in

the beginners’ class and we were soon creating the most

beautiful necklaces, bracelets and

earrings. Samurai warriors used the ancient Japanese

art of Kumihimo to lace their armour, but Carol uses a

modern adaptation of the braid to

create exquisite beaded bracelets

and necklaces.

Thanks to Carol, making jewellery is not just a hobby but a lifetime passionCarol runs beginners, Kumihimo and beaded stitching classes at her studio, four miles from Omagh. They are open to individuals or groups (minimum of four people). Classes last around three hours and include refreshments

Create beautiful Paverpol sculptures

It puts sculpture into the hands of ordinary people like me, it’s such a thrill

It was so fulfi lling actually sculpting beautiful pieces of artwork for the home and garden from all sorts of everyday objects such as wire, tin foil and an old t. shirt. Paverpol dries quickly but allows you enough time to shape your sculpture. Louise helped me make an elegant lady fi gurine and the amazing thing you take your fi nished piece home with you at the end of a one day workshop.

Louise delivers community arts classes in Paverpol sculpture to individuals and groups of all ages and abilities.

Learn to write creatively

They say everyone has a book in them, thanks to Emma I’ve started mine

I’ve always wanted to write, I just didn’t know how to start, until I met Emma. She taught us about developing characters, structuring our stories, how to write good dialogue and even had us writing in different genres by the end. She also gave us sound advice on how to get our work published.

Published author and scriptwriter Emma Heatherington offers one-day classes (10am – 4pm with a lunchbreak) for groups of up to 12 people (16-plus). Children’s classes (8 -12) are also available, as are teenage workshops for 12 - 16 year olds.

How to fly fish

There is no better way to unwind, boating in this tranquil idyll, waiting for the fish to bite

I’d wanted to try fl y fi shing for ages, but didn’t know how to start. This was the ideal way. All the equipment was supplied, the fi shery – a 12-acre stream-fed lake surrounded by rolling grassland and woodland – was packed with rainbow trout and the instructor who took me out on the boat made it seem like second nature.

Instruction/boats available by booking. A wheelie boat onsite caters for wheelchair and disabled anglers

How to look after your horse

We had a brilliant holiday, and so did our horse!

It sounded funny when Dad said we were bringing our horse on holiday. But we all had a great time. They taught me all about grooming my horse, how to maintain the stable and lots of things I didn’t even know about, like plaiting. My horse is happy, now he’s treated like a king!

A perfect 20 kilometre trail along the Blackwater River - so fl at even a beginner like me had no problems.
