Learn to be safe in the kitchen. Family & Consumer Science Manchester Public Schools 2013 KITCHEN SAFETY Slide 2 TO PREVENT CUTS : Cut away from you. Keep your fingers away from the knife. Hold a knife only by the handle. Use caution with sharp objects like can lids. Use sharp knives, not dull blades. Wash knives separately. Slide 3 Kitchen Sanitation Wash hands before and after working with food. Wash hands after sneezing, coughing or bathroom use. Tie back long hair. Keep work surfaces and kitchen equipment clean Use a separate spoon for tasting and serving food Slide 4 To Prevent Foodborne Illness : Store perishables immediately! Keep hot foods hot. Keep cold food cold. Keep hands and work surfaces clean! Dont Cross- contaminate avoid the transfer of bacteria from one food to another. Slide 5 To Prevent Burns: Keep pot handles turned toward stove center. Use pot holders or well padded oven mitts on hot objects. Use a long handle wooden spoon to stir hot foods. Tilt pot lids away from you. Slide 6 Fire Safety Prevention Keep flammables away from the stove/oven Be careful of loose fitting clothes. Clean grease off oven and stove top. Never use water on a grease fire: cover with a lid to cut off oxygen, smother with baking soda, or use a multipurpose fire extinguisher Stand by your Pan. Dont leave your cooking unattended. Slide 7 To Prevent Falls and related injuries: Immediately wipe up spills. Keep the floor uncluttered. Use only sturdy stools or ladders to reach high objects. Dont store heavy objects in upper cabinets. Fix or report broken appliances & equipment. Slide 8 To Prevent Electric Shock : Unplug appliances when not in use. Keep appliances away from water and wet hands. Check the UL label for safety Dont overload outlets. Dont stick metal objects inside electrical appliances. Slide 9 To Children Safe in the Kitchen : Create a no zone around the oven area. Keep pot handles pointed toward the back-center of the stove top. Keep chemicals and medications away from a childs reach. Lock them in a secure cabinet. Keep matches and lighters in a safe/secure area.
