An Overview of Teaching and Learning Online

• Personal Experience with and Reflections on Teaching Online The Good – Online Learning Communities

• I also thought that not having to "GO' to class – in other words, physically going to a location to 'learn‘, would take away part of the socialization and group interaction but, honestly, I felt (and still feeling) more attached to the group than in any other face to face class I took before.  Coming home, open the VCC site and seeing what is going on for the day, is a commitment even stronger that having to go to school.(by course participant COI)

The Good – Flex-Time Teaching• Multitasking – “In and Out”• 24/7 Approach to Teaching

An Overview of Teaching and Learning Online

• Personal Experience with and Reflections on Teaching Online The Bad – “Always on Deck”

• Multitasking – is Daunting for Some- ‘not everyone’s cup of tea’

• 24/7 Approach to Teaching- ‘it’s all too much’ – some are overwhelmed

The Bad – ‘Bad Apples in the Barrel’• Online Learning Communities are ‘Classrooms’ –

they sometimes (rarely) contain disruptive elements(not as easily dealt with as F2F situations)Solution: “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

An Overview of Teaching and Learning Online

• Personal Experience with and Reflections on Teaching Online The Unexpected – Technical Difficulties

• Online is a Technical Environment – unexpected interruptions DO occur – be prepared– Provide Tech Support Info upfront

– Practice Safe Computing – install security measures

The Unexpected – ‘Life Goes On’• Online students and teachers have a life and life has

its twists and turns (requires understanding, empathy, flexibility, and common sense)

Identify Opportunities to Teach and Learn Online

• The ‘Opportunist Mindset’ Scan your Environment to ‘See’ Opportunities

• Prepare Proposals to Employ Your Broader Knowledge and Skill Sets

Inspiration and Motivation:• “A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds”

Sir Francis Bacon (1561 - 1626)

• “Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them.” Anne Landers (1918 - 2002)

• “Problems are only opportunities in work clothes.” Henry J. Kaiser (1882 - 1967)

Identify Opportunities to Teach and Learn Online

• The Integration of Work and Learning/eLearning – Schooley of IBM (quoted in CLO Media*):

“In the past, when it was time to learn you stopped your work”

… (now, it) has moved to learning right at your work location via e-learning, the virtual classroom and resources that are informal in some ways, but when you think about the amount of learning that one gets once you leave school in an informal way, you get it more informally than you do formally. In fact, I think it’s something like 80 percent is done on an informal basis as opposed to maybe 20 that’s a formally structured event.”

…the integration of work and learning is closely linked to increased performance because if employees can get the learning or the information they need in real time, the sky is the limit on what they can accomplish.
