egg (nit) hatches, a shell of the egg remains on the hair shaft. The emerging louse is called a

nymph. It goes through 3 stages as a nymph before becoming an adult louse. Only the adult can

move from human head to human head during direct contact. It is possible to get live lice from

shared hats or family brushes and other objects but the louse cannot live off the host human over 2 days due to the

need to feed off our blood, like a mosquito. They are NOT able to jump or fly but they are fast and do not like light. They

love the warmth and protection of the areas around the ears and back of neck. Full adults are just the size of a tiny

sesame seed from tan to grayish white in color. Anyone can get lice. During the school age years, children are spending

a lot of time in close proximity to friends; they play with each other’s hair, play dress up, give hugs, watch movies on

carpet/area rugs or on fabric furniture next to friends and siblings, try on Halloween costumes and hats at the store,

read in beanbag chairs together, use their beds as seating, have sleepovers, etc. These behaviors increase the chances

of the spread of lice. Since these are age-appropriate activities, regular monitoring of your child’s hair is the best

preventative measure. It is especially important to check your child after trips, extended family visits and after long

breaks before returning to school. Contact your school health provider for more information, resources and support.

*LOST & FOUND is Overflowing!! Parents – Our one Lost & Found class has now turned in to 2 boxes and both are

beyond capacity. Please tell your child to be sure to look through the boxes. Or you may come in yourself and check out

the contents. Please remember that clothing item, lunch boxes, etc. will get back to its owner if it is labeled with a name

– PLEASE LABEL ALL CLOTHING, LUNCHBOXES, BACKPACKS!

*PTYL Registration for T-ball, Baseball, & Softball Players: Porter Township Youth League (PTYL), will conduct our

last chance sign-up for t-ball, baseball, and softball on Sunday, February 21st from 11 AM to 4 PM at Boone Grove High

School. If you have not yet signed up please come out and see us. Once you sign up, you can have your

baseball/softball player stay for open gym. Open Gym times are shown below.

●8u / 10u Baseball – 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. ● 12u / 15u Baseball – 12:30 p.m. to 2:00 p.m.

●8u / 10u Softball – 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. ● 12u / 16u Softball – 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

*Jump Rope for Heart: During gym class for the past couple of weeks , our students have been participating in the

American Heart Association’s “Jump Rope for Heart” fundraiser. Our students have raised $1994 for this worthwhile

program. Mr. Lukas would like to thank all the students and families that contributed. All prizes will be awarded after

they have been shipped from the American Heart Association.
