English Language Arts (69 pts. Total)
• The grade 8 LEAP English language arts assessment includes a written composition, short-answer questions, multiple-choice questions, and an extended-response (essay) question.
• Phase I:• Writing consists of a prompt that requires students to write a
composition. (12 pts.)
• Phase II:• Reading and Responding consists of 20 multiple-choice questions, 8
short-answer questions, and one 4-point essay question based on reading passages. (40 pts.)
• Using Information Resources consists of 5 multiple-choice questions and 2 short-answer questions. (9 pts.)
• Proofreading/Language consists of 8 multiple-choice questions. (8 pts.)

The Reading & Responding Section of the ELA Test: (40 pts. total)
• Read, comprehend, & respond to literature (10 pts.)
• Read, analyze, & respond to literature (12 pts.)
• Apply Reasoning and Problem-Solving Skills (18 pts.)
The Writing Section of the ELA Test: (12 pts. total)
Students’ compositions are scored for elements of composing [4 pts.] (such as elaboration and coherence); for style and audience awareness [4 pts.](such as vocabulary and sentence variety); and for sentence formation, usage,
mechanics, and spelling [4 pts.].
Proofreading (8 pts. total)
• All items in the Proofreading session measure the use of the conventions of standard English (punctuation, capitalization, complex sentence structures, etc.)
• There are 8 multiple choice questions. (1 pt. each)
Using Information Resources (9 pts. total)
• Items require students to locate, select, and synthesize information from a variety of texts, media, references, and technological sources to acquire and communicate knowledge.
• There are 5 multiple choice questions (1 pt. each) and 2 constructed response questions (2 pts. each).
