announced the new engine we were in fact ahead
of the curve, since no new aircraft was announcedat the time, Marc Ventre recalls. But we alsounderstood that airlines were expecting a sub-stantial reduction in fuel consumption before theywould make a commitment. Time has proven usright: when Comac launched the C919 in 2009we were ready. The two world leaders followed:in 2010 Airbus tabbed the LEAP as one of thetwo engines offered on the A320neo, and in 2010Boeing chose it as the exclusive powerplant onits new 737 MAX. Orders have poured in sincethen, along with service contracts. When Snecmaand GE renewed their partnership, they extendedit to include aftersales service, so they could offerintegrated packages, including both the originalengine and support services. This proved to be anexcellent idea, since 90% of customers choosingthe engine have opted for this package.
While awaiting the LEAP service entry in 2016,CFMs assembly lines are already running at fullspeed to handle the large backlog of orders for theCFM56. According to Marc Ventre, Were goingto reach an unprecedented rate of about 1,600engines per year. Our facilities are ready, and we arealso making sure that our suppliers can sustain thisaccelerated pace. At the same time, LEAP devel-opment is proceeding on schedule, with the firstground test of a complete engine slated for 2013.
in half and 15 dB less noise. At the same time,it maintains the well-known reliability and lowmaintenance costs of the CFM56. Airlines wantengines that are reliable, fuel-efficient and inex-pensive to operate, notes Marc Ventre. And thatswhat we give them with LEAP. Were also capi-talizing on the reputation of the CFM56, and wehave retained the basic architecture of this provenengine. Furthermore, we renewed our partnershipwith GE until 2040 back in 2008, at the same timewe launched the new engine, thus reassuring themarket that the winning CFM team would still bein place for the next generation.
