League and to honor the sustainers who paved the way for the League to become what it is today. The 80th Anniversary Celebration included jazz music, a delicious spread of hors d’oeuvres, refreshing wine and delightful conversation with League members across all generations.

Originally founded in 1925 as the Junior Workers, we were formally accepted into the Association of Junior Leages International in 1929. Throughout this year, we will recognize and celebrate our 80th birthday with the use of an anniversary logo.

Watch for this designated logo, which specifically recognizes the number of years of service we have given to our community, on apparel, in the press, and at community events and fundraisers of the League. Join with us as we honor 80 years of service, and begin our next 80 years!

Over the summer I had the pleasure of working with the other Georgia League Presidents to create the Junior Leagues of Georgia Million Minute Read initiative.

The event hosted 75 children with a diverse representation of preschool-aged children from the Atlanta area. The First Lady read a story and each child in attendance took home a book, crafts they made at the event, a backpack including school supplies, and a blanket.

Throughout the year, our League will keep track of how many minutes we spend reading to children in our community. Our placements that involve reading such as Arts Reading, Smart Choices and Kids in the Kitchen will all contribute their reading time towards our League-wide goal of 77,000 minutes. In addition, we will have many opportunities where a League member (Provisional, Active or Sustainer) can volunteer their time with reading a story to a group of children and turning in the minutes to help us in reaching our goal.

Please look for these reading opportunities in our weekly emails and join me in making our League’s contribution to this initiative a huge success.

All thirteen Georgia Junior Leagues are joining together to celebrate the 1,000,000th child being enrolled in pre-K in the state of Georgia through the Bright Start program. A kick-off event, Reading Under the Stars, hosted by the Governor and First Lady and in conjunction with The Junior League’s of Georgia and Bright from the Start, was held at the Governor’s mansion on August 25th.

New Year’s was months ago, but for many of us, it feels like a “new” year. Many children just started back to a new school year and we are looking forward to a new

year in the Junior League of Augusta, Georgia. With every New Year we make resolutions, for League Links our “new year” resolution included a new format and one wish list item: Adobe Creative Suite 4, a graphic design program. Our wish was granted in August when Rebekah Henry, PR Chair, purchased the program and began the painstaking task of reformatting the look of League Links! Many thanks for Rebekah for your time, effort and creative insight. You will see many NEW looks and additions to Junior League of Augusta, Georgia and to League Links.

Our new format will include feature articles, council pages, and an at-a-glance calendar. This issue includes a feature dedicated to our new Executive Board. This gives you a chance to get to know your Executive Board on a personal level. Remember, your Executive Board works for you, so if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas be sure to speak up. Our Council pages have now been grouped together in hopes of making League Links easier to read and to know what each council is working on. As a fellow calendar lover, we have grouped together all League events/dates onto one spread to help you and your families see a better picture of your League life. Feel free to pop this “Bulletin Board” out and put it on your refrigerator! League Links is an informative newsletter for your benefit, but we also include advertising in order to pay for our expenses and hopefully turn a profit for the benefit of the League. Take a moment to look through our advertisers- most are local business owners and many are active or sustaining League members or family members. In today’s economic times, it is important for us to make an impact in our community and you can play the part by supporting these local businesses.

Before our New Year gets into full swing, take a moment to look at all the League has accomplished in the community and all that the League has done for your life. This is your chance to make the dedication to your League and to make the most of your new placement in the New Year!

Sincerly,

Our Vision for the Future is Now…JLA Delegates and other Leagues adopt new vision at 87th Annual Conference in Atlanta

In late April, over 650 delegates from 292 Junior Leagues gathered at this year’s Association of Junior Leagues Annual Conference themed

“Create the Future.” I was honored to represent the Junior League of Augusta at the 87th annual conference, along with Anna Susan Boykin, Membership Vice President; Charlotte Wiedenman, Ways and Means Treasurer; Paula Jackson, President Elect; April King, President; and Ann Beth Strelec, Past President.

Incoming Presidents, Incoming Presidents-Elect and other League Leaders spent three exciting days attending workshops designed to maximize their community impact; voted on a new mission; listened to keynote speaker, Erin Gruwell, Founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation; and shared in the honors awarded to Leagues and League members for outstanding community contributions. The Junior Leagues even welcomed a new League to the Association: the Junior League of San Joaquin Valley, California.

The conference is built around providing leadership and training opportunities for League members. AJLI offered a series of valuable workshops for the assembled Junior League leaders that addressed topics such as “Challenging Times: Changing Fund Development,” “Getting the Most Out of the New AJLI Website,” “Public Speaking 101,” “Raising Awareness & Recruiting Members: The Role of TV, Radio & Print Media” and many more. The

workshops enabled me to learn more about the new marketing and communications initiatives being developed and implemented in Leagues across the country, and begin to strategize on our own League’s future communications plans.

On Thursday, we listened to keynote speaker, Erin Gruwell, Founder of the Freedom Writers Foundation, who shared her remarkable story as a teacher of “unteachable” teenagers in a racially divided urban community. Her story is well-known thanks to the film , Freedom Writers, starring Hillary Swank. The impact of her work and perseverance was an inspiration to all who attended. That night, the Junior League of Atlanta hosted a very special gala opening reception at the Georgia Aquarium. Leagues got to indulge in Southern cuisine while exploring one of the world’s largest aquariums. I even remember distinctly hearing a League member from New York loudly ask “what ARE grits??!!”.

League members also attended two awards ceremonies that honored Junior League members and fellow Leagues. The Mary Harriman luncheon honored Colleen Willoughby – founder of the Seattle Washington Women’s Foundation and City Club and Junior League member since 1960. Anna Susan and I had the opportunity to meet Mrs. Willoughby, and she and Anna Susan delighted in the fact they are both alumni of Kappa Kappa Gamma.

The 87th Annual Conference in Atlanta was a historic meeting and marked an important new chapter in Junior League history. At the Annual Meeting, which took place on the Saturday of the conference, the AJLI Board welcomed a lively debate during this year’s Association Dialogue where delegates rescinded the previous AJLI Vision Statement and adopted a new Vision Statement:

“The Junior League: Women around the world as

catalysts for lasting community change.”

Debbie Brown Robinson, AJLI Board President said, “The new Vision Statement reflects our hopes for the future…our vision for the next 20-plus years…yet works in tandem with our existing Mission and Reaching Out Statement.” The new Vision Statement represents both a call to action to prospective members and an inspired invitation to existing members to re-engage. In the true spirit of Founder Mary Harriman, it encourages us to seize new opportunities to address issues critical to members at a local level as well as matters of global concern. And, finally, it positions us to refocus our Association’s purpose to generate lasting community change and move forward in the 21st century through the leadership of trained volunteers, ensuring the Junior League movement thrives for decades to come.

The Georgia Leagues should be proud – the Junior League of Atlanta represented our state well and showed the hundreds of delegates what true southern hospitality is.

From Top to Bottom: 1 Paula Jackson and Kari Baker at the Area III Conference in Macon. 2 Paula Jackson, Kari Baker, and Cecilia Kemp enjoyed time together at the Area III Conference. 3 Charlotte Wiedenman, Rebekah Henry, and Anna Susan Boykin saw the sights at the Georgia Aquarium during the AJLI Annual Conference in Atlanta.

Page 9: League Links Fall 2009

The theme of this year’s Area III Conference was “Macon a Difference”. Area III is comprised of the southeast corner of the United States. Junior League representatives traveled from Georgia, Florida, North

Carolina and Tennessee to Macon, GA for a weekend of leadership training and League camaraderie.

The conference was opened by the fabulous Vicki Clark with her seminar Love Em or Lose ‘Em: Inspiring and Motivating Volunteers. She reminded us the League is mission focused, but member driven. We need to draw our volunteers closer to our mission and remember that we need to be sure to value our members all through their life. We currently have four generations of women in the league! The League must serve as the one place where our members know they are safely supported and have the opportunities to try something new and grow. We need not be afraid of stepping outside of our comfort zone and trying something new.

Ms. Clark continued by explaining the important role of flexibility in our League life. The League is a women’s movement that adjusts! Some years a member may have heavy involvement in the League and be able to give 200%, other years, just minimum involvement. As a membership, we must support each other through all phases in life. Every League year should be different and members should feel they have grown in some way, learning something about themselves, service or the community. Often times, members may elect to leave because they feel disengaged. It is important to ensure members realize that their time and money is magnified through our League and that they truly our making a difference in our community.

After Ms. Clark’s opening session, we split up into various sessions which included: JL Trends & Membership Retention, The Future of Fund raisers, Giving through a Community Foundation, Engaging Sustainer Members, Grant Writing, Strategic Planning, and Making Time in 2009: Life and Balance. Sunday closed with an open forum on fundraising and the role of sustaining members.

I attended the session on strategic planning, where we discussed that the strategic plan of an organization is not just a document, but rather a guide for the way an organization accomplishes its mission. It needs to be used by all members, not just the executive board. The strategic plan is a tool that always looks forward. As a League, we should identify the goals that move our mission forward externally and how they line up with our current membership.

Most importantly, the Area III conference reminded us to remember the resources of the League. That includes are wonderful sustaining members. Get them involved and excited about what we are doing. Log onto the AJLI website! There are webinars and tools for many of things that you may need to accomplish in your position, or just for your own personal growth. Use your fellow members, email someone in the same position in a different league to get their feedback. Let’s work together so we can keep “Macon a difference”!

Our Provisional year is beginning and with such great response to the Open House events held in March and June, we are pleased to welcome sixty-four new faces into the Junior League of Augusta,

Georgia. The committee has been busy this summer preparing for our year and our first Provisional “Meet N’ Greet” cookout that was held on Sunday, July 26, at the office of Anderson & Adkins Accounting. This was a great event that allowed everyone to meet and chat and get to know each other in a casual setting. We had a great turnout and everyone seemed really eager to get the Provisional year started.

We have a busy fall planned with our monthly meetings for the Provisionals to learn about the different councils of the Junior League and lots of volunteer events. They will giving of their time at the annual Westobou Festival in September, working shifts at our Annual Golf Tournament in October, and helping with the “Mrs. Claus” Tea Time Event and any Kids in the Kitchen opportunites. We are looking forward to a great year and are so excited to have so many volunteers. Please help us welcome them all!

All Aboard the MemberSHIP is the theme of the bulliten board that is in the hallway of the Junior League office. Yes, my Pre-Kindergarten Teacher creativity helped me come up with that idea! If you have not seen it yet,

the board has a large ship on it and the words "All Aboard the MemberSHIP" with the name of the ship being "JLA Membership 09-10". And throughout the year, pictures of members at various League activities will be posted "on the ship". As an entire Membership we are all devoted women who are in this effort of service together, hence being "All Aboard". So, don't jump ship and stay on board with us as we start a new year together.

Last year I read a book called "To Lead is to Serve: How to Attract Volunteers and Keep Them" by Shar McBee. This book was what helped me get through my last year's placement and has definitely prepared me for serving as your Membership VP. There is a certain quote that I try to remind myself of as often as possible, "Progress occurs when courageous skillful leaders seize the opportunity to change things for the better" by Harry S. Truman. This quote is in the first chapter of the book and really set the tone for what type of leader I want to be and I hope that it challenges you to think about what type of leader you want to be. Regardless of your placement, we are "All Aboard" together and everyone should take it upon themselves to change or

The Junior League of Augusta, Georgia is pleased to welcome the 36 members of the 2009 new member class to their growing ranks.

“We are delighted to have these thirty-six women join the Junior League of Augusta. For eighty years, the Junior League of Augusta has been a powerful training ground for women leaders who are committed to making their community better, safer and healthier places to live,” said April J. King, 2009 – 2010 President. “By providing a ten-month training course for these new members the League is able to further develop the integral role our trained volunteers play in strengthening social services, raising awareness of key issues and funding important community initiatives”, King continued.

Provisional members are new members who are in the process of completing admission requirements for active membership. Each of the women participated in a 10 month provisional course, which served as an introduction to the Junior League of Augusta and the community projects it supports. The course also provided opportunities to learn about the community, training for volunteering, and the responsibilities that come with League membership.

LEAGUE MEMBER SPOTLIGHT:Amy ColemanHow a League friendship guided a major life decision

As an active member of the Junior League of Augusta since 2001, Amy Coleman has eight hard-

working years of service to our community under her belt. Throughout her active years, this native Augustan has developed lasting friendships with fellow League members, grown as a volunteer and Leader, and has been exposed to many opportunities to help motivate and change our community.

“My favorite placement has been Service Weekends,” Amy says. I really enjoyed the time that I spent working in the community. It was such a rewarding placement because we were able to have hands-on interaction with children and members of our community. Plus I had a great time getting to know all the girls who worked Service Weekends with me.”

For fifteen years, Amy has taught in Columbia County and currently teaches first grade at Riverside Elementary. Her calling to teach came early and she graduated with her degree in Early Childhood Education from the University of Georgia, and received her Masters in Early Childhood Education at Augusta State University and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership Degree from Cambridge College.

Though she has been shaping the young minds of six year olds for fifteen years, Amy has not yet tired, saying she loves her job and “couldn’t imagine doing ANYTHING else.”

When asked how the League has helped in her professional development, Amy responded, “I have met so many friends through the League. Being a member of the League allows for the opportunity to network with so many great women.”

Yet perhaps the most significant moments in Amy’s League career came through a friendship, developed with fellow Leaguer Amy Epps. When Amy and husband Doug were deciding if they should try to adopt a child, Amy C. turned to Amy E. for adoption information and advice.

Over time, the two Amys built a special bond and Amy Epps’ experience and encouraging words with the adtoption of gave Amy and Doug the hope that adoption would work for them too.

Amy E. recalls, “I think people are put in your life for different reasons.” Amy E. and husband Brian’s story began when one of their daugther’s dear friends was adopted. Years later, the child’s mother said the very things that gave the Epps family the confidence and support through the process. Amy says, “I just paid it forward to Amy Coleman, as (the mother) had done for me.”

Amy E. continues, “Our paths happened to cross at a League committee meeting after we brought our son Jack home. Fertility treatment and adoption are things that bond you with other women whether you mean for it to or not. Amy had such a good attitude about the entire process - I am one that wants to hurry things along! Yet she seemed very patient for the right situation and and to wait for her and Doug’s child to come along. Her passion for children and compassion for others are most likely the traits that made it an easy decision for the birth parents. As for my part, I just happened to have the story that she needed to hear.”

In April of 2009, Amy and Doug adopted a beautiful baby boy, Cameron Thomas Coleman. When Amy speaks of their family of three, it is with a heart bursting with love, saying – “We feel so blessed to have him!”
