CongrAtulAtionS finAliStSin an effort to help empower women entrepreneurs, gain access to networks and media exposure, Own It Ventures partnered with New Jersey Monthly Magazine to create the first Leading Women Entrepreneurs and Business Owners issue. this issue pays tribute to female entrepreneurs for their service, leadership, commitment and contribution to the vitality of their communities and the state. it is the hope of all involved that the tribute and subsequent recognition evening provide inspiration and information for women all across the state and encourage them to achieve their entrepreneurial dreams.

the finalists on the list specifically excel in four categories: innovation, Market Potential, Community involvement and Advocacy for Women. the women chosen are leaders among the women in business in our state. intelligent, creative, ambitious and socially conscious, these women are part of the wave of entrepreneurs rising in new Jersey and across the country.

SuPPort for WoMEn EntrEPrEnEurSSuch encouragement and support is vital for women hoping to start their own businesses. While all business owners face challenges, studies reveal women often experience additional obstacles their male peers are not likely to encounter. the top barriers women business owners encounter are lack of capital funding, inaccessibility to influential networks, and a gender-based disparity in which they are not taken seriously.

oWn it VEnturESlinda Wellbrock and Melissa gasnick-Cloeter founded Own It Ventures to break these barriers after noting the response and success many women expressed while

attending their events. they created a virtual community for women entrepreneurs which provides information, access to investors, retail buyers, media and even a marketplace where members can sell their products.

our ViSionWe believe that women entrepreneurs have untapped, immeasurable potential and it is our vision that Own It Ventures can be the conduit for more success in the business world for all women. By recognizing the leading Women Entrepreneurs and Business owners in this special issue, we add fuel to the economic engine of our state by empowering women throughout new Jersey. Congratulations again to the finalists and to all women who have the courage and fortitude to begin their own journey on the path of entrepreneurship.

The impact of women-owned businessestoday, women own approximately one third of small businesses. these firms employ 7.7 million people and generate $1.3 trillion in annual revenues nationally.

the Center for Women’s Business research estimates that women-owned firms have an economic impact potential of $3 trillion annually that translates into the creation or maintenance of more than 23 million jobs, or 16 percent of all jobs in the united States. Despite these impressive numbers, women are not reaching their business potential as less than 3% of women-owned firms reach $1 million in revenues and beyond.

While Dr. Linda Stone may be familiar to many as the genius behind livingston, nJ’s gentle Caring Dentistry and the architect of some of the nicest smiles in the area, she is also dedicated to providing support and encouragement for professional women interested in starting their own businesses. She has long supported women in business through her advertising and marketing efforts.

Dr. Stone is a true entrepreneur and was at the forefront of women in the dental industry when she began her career path in 1982. She was quick to see the need for a new kind of dentist, a doctor empathetic and compassionate enough to work with patients who experience significant stress and anxiety when visiting the dentist. As a consequence of their fears, these patients may avoid needed care and suffer both physically and socially as a result of painful or unsightly conditions. Seeing a chance to help those patients change their lives for the better inspired Dr. Stone to open gentle Caring Dentistry in the 90’s.

in her new business, she combined her cosmetic dentistry skills with her unique understanding of patient concerns to provide an environment in which the most nervous patient is able to relax and receive much needed care without pain or fear. Since then, she has been responsible for helping people regain control of their lives by providing them with a smile they are proud to share, giving them the courage to take chances both professionally and personally.

Dr. Stone treats adults and children, and is an expert in preventive care, teeth whitening, crown and bridge work, porcelain veneers, cosmetic bonding and implant restoration. She is a big advocate of the eight-hour smile technique, which incorporates the use of immediate load implants and requires only one surgical procedure.

Although Dr. Stone’s main focus is dentistry and incorporates the most state of the art techniques, her private practice has evolved into providing total makeovers, a strong signal of the entrepreneurial spirit which first drove her to offer innovative dental care. Currently, services include facials, micro-dermabrasions and other cosmetic breakthroughs designed to improve the patient’s health, appearance and self-esteem. the office prides itself on being more like a retreat than a dentist’s office, attracting a broad and appreciative client base and inspiring them to better safeguard their health. throughout her career, Dr. Stone has made it a priority to balance her professional success with charitable efforts, never losing sight of the compassion and concern which first inspired her to start her own business.

Cindy Malinchak used the foresight and social responsibility that characterize all her endeavors—a follower of “green” technology since the late 70’s—to found independent Construction Enterprises, as a green construction company in 2005. Since then, Cindy has only become more devoted to the ideal of sustainable living and even changed the company name to Environmentally Based green Building in 2009 to reflect that. Armed with a successful career in construction, a bach-elor’s in Business Management from gannon university, as well as certificates in both Construction Management and Sustainable Design from nYu, she sensed she could lead the construction industry in a new direction.

While she faced the traditional prejudice against women in such a male-dominated field, Cindy succeeded by believing in herself and playing to her strengths. “i always believed that a woman could excel in whatever endeavor she chose, and knew that with my passion for sustainability and my attention to detail, that i could succeed in this industry. Knowledge is the key to succeeding in a male dominated industry. By positioning yourself as a source of knowledge, your right to compete in a male dominated industry is solidified.” Always looking to increase her knowledge base of the industry, Cindy is currently pursuing a Master of Science in green technology.

the time spent building socially-conscious, award-winning buildings, such as Bangz Salon, which was featured as “2010 Salon of the Year” in Salon today magazine and received the Victorian Society of America award for Historic Preservation, has not detracted from Cindy’s ability to give back. Currently focusing her volunteer efforts on charities benefiting mili-tary veterans, Cindy is a coordinator of a self-funded effort to host evening events for nJ Military Veterans, allowing them to enjoy an evening away from the Veterans Home. She is also a local sponsor of “Home for our troops,” an organization that builds homes or adapts current homes for those service members that were disabled while serving their country (www.homeforourtroops.org). in that role, Cindy will be both planning fund raising events as well as actively participating in the building process when a home is designated.

An incredible role model for women in business, Cindy represents the best of what women can offer in male-domi-nated fields: creativity, clarity and above all, determination. She is hopeful that her success will encourage other wom-en to pursue their dreams. As she notes, “i am very vocal about the right of women to pursue any career they wish. i believe that my participation in a male dominated arena with success sets a positive image for other women who would like to do the same.”

Valerie Montecalvo is the President of Bayshore recycling Corporation (BrC) and co-owner (with her husband, frank) of Montecalvo Material recovery facility. Valerie takes enormous joy in being part of the solution for a greener, cleaner world. As she notes, “Construction recycling requires minimal effort, but the impact on our environment is monumental.”

founded in 1995, BrC was the culmination of working nearly 20 years in heavy highway construction. frustrated with the waste and environmental irresponsibility in this arena, Valerie knew she could create a company to both address that issue and improve the quality of life for all nJ residents.

A credit to her dream of making a difference, BrC does just that by saving valuable landfill space for future generations and advancing the recovery of materials through recycling and sustainable operations powered by renewable energy. in June 2011, Bayshore recycling and Woodbridge township were honored with a Smart growth Award from new Jersey future in the category of innovative industrial Sustainability. When their 15-year development plan is completed, the facility will operate as 100-percent “green” businesses powered by 100-percent renewable energy on a 52-acre waterfront site in Keasbey, the industrial section of Woodbridge township.

not content with merely building one of the most innovative and vertically integrated recycling businesses in the northeast, Valerie and frank are also advocates of philanthropic work and support many local and national charities. they also support other environmentally conscious non-profits such as the nature Conservancy, Clean ocean Action, Edison Wetlands Association, the Sustainable raritan river Business roundtable and the Sea Shepard from Whale Wars. to honor these efforts, the girl Scouts of Central and Southern nJ awarded her a 2011 Women of Distinction Award, given to women who have achieved success in their careers while balancing work, family and service to the community.

Her dedication and diligence have clearly made her a force to be reckoned with, as was evident when she was invited to Washington, DC as the national Vice President for the Construction Materials recycling Association (CMrA) to lend her expertise on Construction and Demolition recycling to the united States Environmental Protection Agency. “recycling is not a passing fad and going green needs to be a way of life,” she explains. the Montecalvos have two children; nicole, who serves as Director of Public relations at Bayshore and frankie, who is a professional race car driver in the American le Mans series.

Susan Reach Winters is a Shareholder and the Chairperson of Budd larner, PC’s family law Department with broad experience in all areas of the practice of family law, including divorce, custody and visitation, child support, alimony, equitable distribution, prenuptial agreements and business and other asset valuations. Susan handles all types of family and matrimonial matters, ranging from uncontested marital dissolutions to sophisticated and complex litigation involving, for example, the valuation and distribution of professional practices and business interests. Susan’s focus is on providing her clients with what they need to begin again.

While she knows there may be no perfect way to end a marriage, Susan is committed to having her clients emerge from the divorce process reinvented and positive. Several years ago she initiated the “team” approach to divorce which brings together professionals, each with a particular expertise, to deal with the various pain points of the divorce: a lawyer to protect the client’s legal rights; a therapist to help the client deal with emotional and child-related issues; a forensic accountant to identify and value the marital assets; and a financial advisor to assist the client in planning his or her future. other experts may also be needed on the “team” depending on the complexity or circumstances of each divorce such as a real estate professional or mortgage broker, for example.

Susan knows that avoiding court is much easier if emotions are minimized. that’s where therapy helps to separate the business of the divorce from the emotion of the divorce. the accountant creates a menu of assets and lays out the marital lifestyle including earnings and expenses. the financial advisor takes that information, sometimes gives input early on and typically continues his job following the settlement to handle the client’s financial future.

Susan emphasizes that “there are no real winners in divorce.” However the “team” approach to divorce gives clients a competitive advantage in the divorce process, but, as importantly, it can help them accept that divorce is not a permanent condition and move past that transition to a richer, better life.

Liz Miller founded Summit Place financial Advisors in 2008 to help families whose wealth complexities have surpassed mass-market approaches. With a depth of investing and analytical experience that is rare in the industry, her leadership comes from over 20 years in security analysis and portfolio management, not brokerage or sales like many advisors.

liz has been particularly sought out by those that experience a recent increase in wealth that brings new challenges such as those who inherit wealth, sell a family business or achieve significant professional success. Many have managed their own wealth, but now realize that the complexity has surpassed their abilities. liz helps clients simplify their financial challenges and develops a personalized disciplined investment strategy. liz further coordinates a complete expert approach to their wealth management. With comfort, control and piece of mind, Summit Place helps clients achieve their lifestyle and legacy goals.

liz is a 2010 top 50 nJ Women in Business recipient and is frequently quoted in the financial media as an expert market strategist. A graduate of the Wharton School and Columbia university, liz also earned the CfA and CfP

Beth represents both private and public sector employers in all areas of labor and employment law, including discrimination and harassment litigation, employee counseling, union avoidance and contract negotiations, employment law training, sexual and other harassment prevention, family and medical leave issues, reasonable accommodation issues, workplace investigations, wage and hour compliance, and policy and procedure development. Debra is still setting her sights on the future, constantly reading, writing, and speaking about the newest technologies that are fueling new media channels and data-driven marketing. And she oversees every account at gráficagroup to ensure all campaigns are executed to deliver quantifiable growth.
