Leadership Team Meeting October 31, 2011

Present at the meeting: Mizelle, Sauls, Unicruz, Willis, Drake, Tyson,

Smallwood, PitPit, Bond, Hargett, Bayley, and Hardy.

Chairperson: C. Mizelle Recorder: M. Sauls

The Teacher Working Conditions: The team reviewed the suggestions provided

by the staff for the Teacher Working Conditions survey. Mrs. Mizelle provided the

team with the information given by the 6, 7, 8th grade and exploratory families in

regard to suggestions to improve working conditions. Any suggestions

implemented will need to become a part of our School Improvement Plan.

    1. Limiting Paperwork suggestions/discussion:

Mufty Day Money, etc must be receipted (Best Practices for Audit) Mr. PitPit

suggested that someone else can help receipt the money in the am? Is there a personavailable to implement this practice? This may or may not be effective at BMS.

Cumulative records 8th grade esp. new students the counselor should make sure all

information is present in cum. folder. Hardy stated at the last meeting that she

would talk to the counselor about ensuring that this is happening. Can the teachers

without a homebase team up with a homebase teacher to ensure all cumulative

folders are completed at the end of the year to expedite the process of completing

    this paperwork.

The suggestion was made, and it was agreed upon, that email would act as our

primary form of communication. Prior to staff meetings, the staff will need to printout materials needed for the meeting and bring it with them. This practice will

eliminate the time needed to pass out materials and thus lessen the time spent in

meetings. E-mails should be sent out prior to the day of the staff meeting to allow

staff adequate time to prepare their materials for the meeting. The staff is

    responsible for checking their e-mails.

    2. Minimal Interruptions to instructional environment

    suggestions/discussion:

Emergency messages will be allowed, but an administrator should be notified so

that they can carry the message to the staff member which will allow the staff

member to take that emergency call in private.

It has been observed that there are still calls being sent to the classrooms during

instructional time, although somewhat better. Mrs. Hardy will discuss with the front

office that calls should not be put through during instructional time. This time

includes 7:30-8:00. A message should be taken or the front office should send calls

    straight to voice mail.

There are much fewer interruptions being made to the instructional environment as

a result of bus notes. Mr. Moore handles bus notes in the cafeteria during the

    students lunch.

Mrs. Mizelle made a note to check on late students to see if they are being accounted

for. Many are being marked absent in NCWISE when they come in late.

    3. Non-instructional time is sufficient (planning) suggestions/discussion:

The decision was made to do the MOvember (mens health) and the Christmas

baskets as service projects. After the completion of these two projects, we will have

completed service projects. The decision was made to eliminate the food drive that

we used to do in November so that we would not have two projects taking place at

    the same time.

*All meetings should have agendas to expedite the process. Suggestion was made to

have a timekeeper. All meetings should start on time---so that timed items will stay

    on track during meetings.

Mrs. Hardy would like all meetings to be planned via the grade level leaders. Times

must be scheduled prior to the meeting. This practice will allow grade level leaders

the ability to plan for a protected day for their families to plan. Plan out meetings

with an agenda and determine what needs to be met on and what can be sent

through an email. If e-mail will suffice, use that as a means of communication.

    4. Parent and guardians are influential decision makers at the school

    suggestions/discussion:

We are working on trying to get a parent on the leadership team and we are

working on getting the PTA back up and running.

We will continue parent nights. The 8th grade parent night is the November 29th.

Hardy will get with Benford to work on parent volunteers. The 6, 7, and 8th grade

families should discuss what we want parents to do. Do not let parents make copies

or grade papers. The suggestion was made to use parent volunteers for Math and

Reading buddies. Parent volunteers could also be used for putting up items

(students work) in hall or school building.

    5. Teachers feel comfortable raising issues and concernssuggestions/discussion:

Almost everyone on the staff agreed that a suggestion box was one means for being

heard. Mrs. Mizelle is going to get a Staff Suggestion box to be kept in the library by

next week. Only an administrator can read the suggestions in the box. Suggestions

    will be checked weekly.

One concern that was brought up involved the proper chain of command for

Referrals. Currently, referrals are going to both Moore and Hardy. They both are

working with all grade levels in the area of discipline.

    6. Teachers have an appropriate level of influence on decision making in this

    school suggestions/discussion:

The lesson plan format does not matter as long as the district pieces are there.

In the future, Mrs. Mizelle will ensure that leadership team minutes are sent to the

staff once they have been read and approved by the Leadership team.

    Mission Statement:

The suggestions made at the staff meeting were reviewed. How do we want to takethis information back to the staff?

We like that the lastsuggestion says to ensure every child reaches, as opposed to

    provide opportunities for all students.

The suggestion was made that the mission should be worded as our mission

instead of the mission of Bertie Middle School.

The staff will highlight the words from stated mission statements that they feel must

be included in the mission on Mondays staff meeting (11/7/11). At the next staff

meeting (or) called meeting, the team will take the three new mission statements

(and) new combined statement along with the current one for the staff and vote on

the one they feel best depicts our mission at BMS. We will use an Infinity piece

(place sticker by one they like the most- on a gallery walk). Suggestion was made:

to verbalize the statements to be voted on (then) Voting for the mission statement

will be an exit ticket for the staff meeting. Verbalization team members: M. Sauls, G.

    Tyson, T. Smallwood, T. Drake.

    Meeting was adjourned.
