Session III | 11:05 AM – 11:50 AMTransitioning Adult School Students to Community College with Noncredit and Credit
Successful Transition to College: West Los Angeles College and Los Angeles Techonology Center have created a partnership to provide an ongoing and sustainable way to transition students to college beyond a single or series of workshops. WLAC taught its free noncredit courses called Intro to Post-Secondary Education (BS 75) to 38 LATC students at the adult school campus in the fall. Approximately 70% of these LATC students are now taking Political Science 1 (credit course) and two noncredit courses in the current spring semester. Political Science 1 meets graduation requirements at both institutions, and the noncredit study skills class and noncredit college placement test prep class help students succeed in their credit class and prepare them to place at college level on the college placement test. Students are not only earning college credit, but are becoming more familiar with the academic rigors of college while gaining academic skills and confidence to successfully transition to college. Join us and learn the tips and pitfalls in expanding your adult school’s collaboration with community colleges in this informative and exciting workshop.

The New Soft Skills Course
Soft Skills, also known as employability or 21st century skills, have actually been requested as an educational curriculum objective by employers since 1907, if not before. Studies of Fortune 500 CEOs by the Stanford Research Institute and the Carnegie Mellon Foundation found that 75% of long-term job success depended on people skills (soft skills) and only 25% on technical skills. According to psychologist Daniel Coleman, the ability to relate to other people matters twice as much as IQ or technical skills in job success. Come find out about a two exciting 30-hour courses LAUSD had developed to help students in all programs be career and management ready for day one in their new jobs. Participants will experience a soft skills learning activity and reflection component within larger discussion of the critical emphasis on soft skills in the new adult education for student success in the global economy. Participants will also identify the what, why, and how of student learning of the ‘skills that pay the bills’.
