Lessons from Lessons from GeeseGeese

Page 57: Leadership PPt

Fact 1: As each goose flaps its wings, it creates an “uplift” for the birds that follow. By flying in a “V” formation, the whole flock adds 71% greater flying range than if each bird flew alone.

Lesson: People who share a common direction and sense of community can get where they are going quicker and easier because they are traveling on the thrust of one another.

Page 58: Leadership PPt

Fact 2: When a goose falls out of formation, it suddenly feels the drag and resistance of flying alone. It quickly moves back into formation to take full advantage of the lifting power of the bird immediately in front of it.

Page 59: Leadership PPt
Page 60: Leadership PPt

Lesson: If we have as much sense as a goose, we stay in formation with those headed where we want to go. We are willing to accept their help and give our help to others.

Page 61: Leadership PPt

Fact 3: When the lead goose tires, it rotates back into the formation and another goose flies to the point position.

Family & FriendsCo-workers

Supervisors

Lesson: It pays to take turns doing hard tasks and sharing leadership. Like geese, people are interdependent on each other’s skills, capabilities, and unique gifts, talents, or resources.

Employees

Page 62: Leadership PPt

Lesson: We need to make sure our honking is encouraging. In groups where there is encouragement, the production is much greater. The power of encouragement is the quality of honking we seek. (to stand by one’s heart or core values and encourage the heart and core of others)

Fact 4: The geese flying in formation honk to encourage those upfront to keep up their speed.

Page 63: Leadership PPt

Fact 5: When a goose gets sick or wounded, two geese drop out of formation and follow it down it down to help and protect it. They stay until it dies or is unable to fly again. Then, they launch out with another formation or catch up with the flock.

Lesson: If we have as much sense as geese, we will stand by each other in difficult times as well as when we are strong.

REJECTION

One of the most common costs of leadership is the experience of rejection. If you are willing to accept the call to leadership, at times, you may be rejected and misunderstood

Page 69: Leadership PPt

69

CHALLENGES OF BEING CHALLENGES OF BEING A LEADERA LEADER

CRITICISM

No leader is exempt! The very nature of effective leadership involves taking a position on issues, making decisions, and determining direction. These will always result in some form of reaction from one’s environment.

Page 70: Leadership PPt

70

CHALLENGES OF BEING CHALLENGES OF BEING A LEADERA LEADER

LONELINESS

Leadership, at times, is lonely because you must be out front, ahead of the followers. Also, because the leader is the one with the guiding vision and purpose, he/she sees the end from the beginning and must live both the process and destination, all at the same time.

Page 71: Leadership PPt

71

CHALLENGES OF BEING CHALLENGES OF BEING A LEADERA LEADER

PRESSURE AND PERPLEXITY

Leaders must face the challenge of the responsibilities and demands that come with leadership. These involve the need to make critical decisions, often under constraints and external pressure.

Page 72: Leadership PPt

72

CHALLENGES OF BEING CHALLENGES OF BEING A LEADERA LEADER

MENTAL AND PHYSICAL FATIGUE

Leadership places heavy demands on the individual who fills the position. There is no way to become an effective leader and not be affected by its stress, physical demands, and mental toll.

Page 73: Leadership PPt

73

CHALLENGES OF BEING CHALLENGES OF BEING A LEADERA LEADER

PRICE PAID BY THOSE CLOSEST TO YOU

You must be aware of the tremendous cost which will be born by those closest to you (for example, family members). Because leadership demands the giving of oneself to others, your life becomes the property of those whom you SERVE.

EXPANDING YOUREXPANDING YOURPERSONAL EMPOWERMENTPERSONAL EMPOWERMENT

1. Assess your present level of personal empowerment. (Be honest. Solicit input from various sources.)

2. Determine whether your performance falls below, meets, or exceeds customer expectations.

3. If your performance is below expectations, assess your level of commitment. (Seriously reexamine whether you are committed to meeting the expectations of your position. If not, make plans for doing something else.)

Page 75: Leadership PPt

75

EXPANDING YOUREXPANDING YOURPERSONAL EMPOWERMENTPERSONAL EMPOWERMENT

4. Committed, determine the new skills you

require. (If your responsibility and accountability expanded with your new/present position, write details about the new skills you require—personal and/or professional skills.)

5. Acquire a mentor/coach to hold you accountable. (Check out the results you produce.)

6. Work to overcome your self-limitations. (Let’s talk about self-esteem.)

Page 76: Leadership PPt

EXPANDING YOUREXPANDING YOURPERSONAL EMPOWERMENTPERSONAL EMPOWERMENT

7. If committed to expanded empowerment,

define a new challenging area of activity. (Describe a project or an area of activity you would enjoy. This should involve significantly expanded responsibility in terms of the acquisition of new personal and/or professional skills.)

8. Proceed and apply steps five and six where difficulties occur. (Get started on the new project; use and learn proven professional methods and knowledge.)
