This is in line with what employers look for when hiring prospective employees as highlighted by Ministry of Education Malaysia in the Graduate Employability Blueprint 2012 – 2017.

It is these qualities that we strive to imbibe in our students and platforms such as this, the iLead Confer-ence, is one of the avenues we will utilise to increase our students’ ability to acquire these soft skills. The iLEAD Conference aims to educate existing and as-piring Student Leaders by exposing them to key in-dustry speakers and personalities who has initiated significant contributions and will be sharing their ex-periences in the areas of Personal Leadership, Lead-ing Others, Servant Leadership and Inspiring Action.

Through methods such as this, which will allow them to gain knowledge on the importance of these soft skills in an increasingly globalised world, we hope that our students will become Future Ready and able to meet the challenges and demands of the working environment on completion of their degree.

Congratulations to the organising committee of the iLead Conference for bringing together a panel of speakers that will definitely provide valuable insight to all the students. To the esteemed panel of speakers, thank you for your time and for sharing lessons that will add an-other dimension to our students’ education here at Taylor’s University.

I hope all our students will benefit greatly from the insights from this event.

Dr Jon Whitmore

At Taylor’s University, we believe in empowering students to become impactful members of the profes-sional world upon their graduation. In order to achieve this, we have put into place various initiatives like the Taylor’s Graduate Capabilities and most recently, the 2nd Transcript or the SHINE Award programme to allow our students to hone their soft skills and develop their leadership qualities.

We have also incorporated elements of the 5C’s; Communication, Critical thinking and Problem Solving, Collaboration, Creativity and Innovation and Cultural Adaptation; into our pedagogy here at Taylor’s.

iLEAD, a hallmark conference and core component of the Empowerment Series under Learning Package 2: People and Leadership was designed to feature inspiring, experienced and dynamic leaders of the world to motivate and encourage our students, in guiding them to realise their full potential as effective leaders. Through the iLEAD Conference, every student will be provided with the opportunity to understand that leadership can be developed.

Additionally, the Experiential Learning component of this learning package will see our students assuming lead-ership roles in various Student Organisations simulating corporate organisations. This experience will provide all students with the opportunity to put leadership theories and understanding into practice and achieve the goals set for it. Multiple avenues will also be provided for our students to work with teams and people from various backgrounds and nationalities.

We are confident that the SHINE Award Programme and specifically Learning Package 2: People and Leadership will not only expose our students to leadership princi-ples, but provide them with a plethora of opportunities

to put these principles into practice. Hence, completing this programme will position our students at an edge compared to other graduates!

The iLead Conference has come a long way since it was first established in 2015. Approaching the 3rd iLEAD Conference today, we are grateful for the support we have received from our past and present speakers who have dedicated their time throughout.

The previous iLEAD Conferences has been such an inspiration to our participants that many have taken on a leadership position through various platforms. This year, I am pleased to announce that iLEAD Conferences 2016 are organised by LEAD 50, an exclusive student committee who have been working very hard to give you a memorable learning experience. Enjoy the conference and all the best in your SHINE journey!

Sincerely,Associate Professor Dr Tang Siew Fun,

MR JANARONSON NAGARAJAHHead, Life Skills Development,Taylor’s University

A- Aspire to become a leader who wants to make a positive difference B- Believe in yourself by developing your po-tential and understand what it takes to become the next influential leader C- Commit to your Aspirations and Believe by applying what you have learnt D- Daily disciplines in being faithful to the little things which matters E- Experiment with different life experiences and things to find the true path that suits you

iLEAD was developed with the fundamental aim of equipping all students with the right foundation and knowledge, application techniques and skills to prepare you with all aspects of leadership skills, in hopes of pre-paring you with the task of becoming effective leaders. By attending the iLEAD Conference, you have earned yourself the leading position as a learner and early ris-er. The iLEAD Conference will teach you how to commit to your aspirations and believes, apply and practice what you have learnt so that it becomes engraved in your daily routine (daily disciplines).

This is why we carefully selected our distinguished speakers based on their experience, personal success

stories and proven track record in the area of leadership and especially in inspiring others to elevate themselves. I hope that you will pay great attention to each of their message conveyed so that your foundation in becoming an effective leader is moulded in.

Make use of this opportunity to widen your network of friends by identifying and leveraging on each other’s strengths and helping each other learn every day.

I would also like to take this opportunity to convey my sincere appreciation to my colleague Ms Laveenia Theertha Pathy from Life Skills Development who is the key anchor of the iLEAD Conference and also, the key Advisor for LEAD50. Our vision is to make iLEAD, a lead-ership conference like none other that will inspire and impact our students in all ways possible. I am glad to be able to see its fruitful impact today.

The world is in-need of more leaders who can make a positive difference by adding more value to the community and nation. Let that start with you.

All the best!

Sincerely,Mr Janaronson Nagarajah

Leadership does not require mechanisms as complex as rocket science. While there are different school of thoughts about leadership and wheth-er leaders are born or made, I for one believe that leaders are made. In one of my favourite leadership book, The Leadership Challenge by James Kou-zes and Barry Posner, it is mentioned that “We’ve never met a leader who wasn’t born. We’ve also never met an accountant, artist, athlete, engineer, lawyer, physician, writer or zoologist who wasn’t born. We’re all born. That’s a given. It’s what you do with what you have before you die that makes the difference.”

I believe with my whole heart that this is true and is something that can be acquired by any individual who has the heart to learn. In my simple way, it can be as easy as ABCDE. All you have to do is:-

Launched in 2015, the iLEAD Conferences is the brain-child of Life Skills Development (LSD) for the SHINE Award Programme. Life Skills Development (LSD) sup-ported by the SHINE Award Centre prides itself on in-spiring Taylorians to take control of their opportunities and seize the day. Distinguished speakers come to Taylor’s University to share their experiences through topics related to personal leadership, leading others and inspiring action. The 1st and 2nd iLEAD Confer-ences were largely planned and run by Life Skills De-velopment (LSD) personnel with the aid of a student committee called LEAD 30.

This year, 2016 Life Skills Development (LSD) has de-cided to create more leadership opportunities for stu-dents by establishing LEAD 50, an exclusive student committee responsible in organising the iLEAD Con-ferences in 2016. LEAD 50 employs more student ef-fort in conceptualising, implementing and executing the iLEAD Conferences in 2016. LEAD 50 is led by the

Conference Director, Deputy Conference Director, Conference Finance Director and Conference Secre-tary. Additionally, LEAD 50 consists of the following departments; Conference Relations, Publicity and Pro-motions, Speaker Liaison, Sponsorship and Partnership and University Liaison - all of which are led by separate Heads of the Department.

What you see and experience at the iLEAD Conference is the result of LEAD 50’s commitment, determination and passion throughout the year. None of this would have been possible without the guidance and support of Ms Laveenia Theertha Pathy, Life Skills Development Specialist & LEAD 50 Advisor who has been instru-mental in the development and growth of the iLEAD Conferences. So sit back, relax, and prepare to be inspired!

The iLEAD Conference themed, “Initiating Future Leaders” was developed for the SHINE Award Pro-gramme as a core component of the Empower-ment Series under Learning Package 2: People and Leadership. The conference is a platform aimed to provide SHINE Participants as well as every Tay-lor’s University student with the opportunity to understand every individual can develop the atti-tude, skills and competencies relevant to become a good leader.

Taylor’s University through various initiatives, in-tends to expose students to a multitude of curricu-lum outside of the classroom by helping them de-velop skills relevant to the working world, in order for them to take their productive place as leaders in the global community.

The one-day conference was developed to expose students to renowned leaders who are willing to share inspirational stories ranging from Personal Leadership, Leading Others and Inspiring Action.

The three key topics above will inspire students to think outside the box, encourage them to ignite an idea and explore innovative ways to initiate the idea in pursuit of a significant impact.

The five ‘i’s’ are crucial words towards the making of an effective leader.

The iLEAD Conference is organised by Taylor’s University’s Life Skills Development with the sup-port of SHINE Award Centre. The key objectives of the iLEAD Conference are:

1. Distinguish Personal Leadership from Leading Others2. Understand qualities of an Effective Lead-er and how they culturally adapt to different environments3. Find inspiration through various real life success story examples from exemplary indus-try leaders 4. Encourage a mind of critical thinking, prob-lem solving, creativity and innovation.

J. J. Fernandez or more popularly known as JJ, is a fa-mous radio announcer who was born in a family full of broadcasters, his sister Zabrina Fernandez is an Emmy award-winning producer and his brother, Joshua Fer-nandez is an award winning television commercial director. Unlike his siblings, JJ gravitated towards radio broadcasting and got his start as one of the Hitz cruisers and slowly worked his way up to co-hosting his own segment with fellow deejay Rudy Sufian as part of the “Hitz Morning Crew”. Their show served as a turning point in the Malaysian radio format as they introduced more of a comedic take on breakfast shows such as their skit called ‘Gotcha Calls’ which is still a segment that is being practiced on almost every major radio sta-tion in Malaysia today.

For all the 90’s kids, JJ was a voice hard to ignore growing up. He was, later on promoted to join the ranks of DJ’s and he took over the morning shift that ran from 2am to 6am. After moving around through various shifts, he finally ended up as the permanent morning host for 12 years.

In 2013, JJ shocked his listeners by announcing that he was going to leave Hitz.fm to rival company “Red.Fm” as he stated that he was ready for a new challenge and then hosted the breakfasts show on Red.FM with the co-host Ezra Chuah. Besides that, he also managed to hold onto a position as a Consultant Programming and Talent Development Assistant Manager with “Star Radio Group” where he helps to cultivate and develop new talents.

Thus, JJ has been an evident figure in the radio industry with over 17 years of experience. Malaysians everywhere are now familiar with his distinctive voice and personality that is evident through his shows. He has picked up many new tricks such as promotion of a radio station, production work and programming and the notorious graveyard shift from midnight to 8a.m. Moreover, he uses the words of his father which is “Knowledge gained is useless unless you share it”. JJ hopes to share his knowledge and experience gained in every aspect of his life at the upcoming iLEAD Con-ference.
