Lead Teacher GuidancePupil Projected Grades
Projecting end of key stage grades in Years 10 & 11 and Year 12 &
13
The following is an example of a structure that TLRs should use togo through with members of their team to make sure that gradeprojections are standardised and as accurate as possible, to ensurewe can address underachievement and set up interventions earlier
ALL our students have been set end of KS4 and KS5 upperquartile target grades
At various points in Years 10, 11, 12 and 13, teachers will
need to project what their students will achieve when they sitthe examination at the end of Year 11 and Year 13. This is theoverall grade. The grade that will appear on theircertificates.
The question you will be asked is: If each student keepsworking the way (name) is at this moment in time, whatGCSE/BTEC/A level etc. grade will (name) go on to achieve?
You are not asking for a current working at grade. Its a projection .
You will need to help members of your departments (particularly
new staff) to make accurate projections?
HOW?
Before the Departmental Meeting
Inform what historically students in their particular setsnormally achieve. You can also get this information from me.
Advise teachers to take into account ALL the evidence: iequality of work; students current work rate; behaviour,
attendance Recent test performance might be helpful
Dont be too swayed by one set of test results eg theMock
Essentially, you are asking for their professional judgement backed by the evidence referred to above
In the Meeting
Hold the meeting with an agenda item. students projectedgrades
Describe the progress their students are making
Listen out for predictions which seem overly optimistic orpessimistic

Challenge in a supportive way
Focus on those students who are 2 or more grades below theirend of KS4 or Ks5 target grade (those in red on the progressbroadsheets)
Ask teachers what they are doing to address under-
achievement Have they let key staff know whos under-achieving and why?
Have interventions been effective?
Offer departmental support
Agree strategies
After the Meeting
Assess impact
If students are not progressing to expected levels, look atalternative interventions/solutions involve the TLR PP
Assess progress at your next department meeting under anagenda item Pupil Progress and put in place interventionsfor pupils who are underachieving regardless of their targetgrade.
What about Coursework predictions?
If early in the coursesay January of Year 10advise that thisjudgement will be based upon what they have achieved onthose aspects of coursework already completed.
If pupils scored a C on the first piece of coursework to assumetheyll achieve the same in the remainder. That will give themthe projected coursework grade
If on the next piece of coursework pupils achieve an A ratherthan the C which they got on their first piece..then followingthe next request for a coursework projection, the teacher raisethe grade from a C to probably a B grade.
Important points to remember about coursework grades.
If a C/D borderliner ends up with a C for coursework. The finaloverall grade is very likely to be a D or worse.
This is even more crucial for those subjects where courseworkmakes up the majority of the marks. Eg GCSE Business, ICT,Drama and English
Its crucial that borderliners coursework grades are raised toat least a B grade
Make sure that your teachers are aware of this from the startof the course
