Mr. McArdle’s Weekly Update - 6/7/19
Honoring Academic Success
Thursday morning we hosted our Academic Awards
Assembly. It was a tremendous assembly in which
our students showed great respect and engagement
celebrating the accolades of their peers. Our
department chairs, counselors, Mrs. Lowe, and I
presented awards. I would like to thank our faculty
for their time and effort in creating and presenting the
awards to the deserving students. We also would like
to thank the over 150 family and community
members who attended the ceremony!
Congratulations to the students who were honored for
their efforts. It was very special to have all of our students and staff participate in the event this year!
Way to go, Knights!
42 Academic L’s Awarded!
The final award presented at our Academic Awards Assembly was our coveted Academic L. These are
awarded to seniors who have an overall GPA of 90% or higher over their high school career through the
3rd marking period of their senior year. The 42 honorees came on stage to receive their L and also shared
the college they are attending and their declared major. It was a very powerful moment for our
underclassmen to witness! Congratulations to our Academic L winners!

Congrats to our GVEP Graduates!
Tuesday night 23 of our seniors graduated from the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership (BOCES). The night capped a great journey for our students that gave them many valuable experiences and exposure to their chosen career field. Included are the Academy graduates who attended either the Info Tech or Health Careers program through the GCC College Tech Prep, earning up to 18 college credits. We had four Knights take home honors:
Elizabeth Smalley - FFA Service Scholarship
Scott Bollin-Shugarts - Car Quest Auto Body Skills Award
Richie Steen - Automotive Tech Student of the Year & NFDA Ron Smith Auto Tech Comp Award
Brandon Jeanotte - CTE Perfect Attendance: 2 Years
We are very proud of our graduates and the time, energy, and dedication they have put into their programs. The skills and knowledge they are walking away with have set them up for an exciting future! Congratulations to our students!

Champions! What a run by our Varsity Baseball team! They are currently riding a seven game winning streak including the
Section V Class B2 Championship last Sunday over Wellsville and Tuesday night over B1 Champ, Batavia!
The Knights are 18-4 and will play at 3pm at Lockport Sports Complex (5673 Beattie Ave, Lockport) in the Far
West Regional game vs. Section VI Champ, Medina! The Knights are ranked #9 in the State rankings and
Medina is ranked #5. It has been an incredible stretch of big time pitching performances, timely hits, great
defense, tons of chest bumps, and a team energy like no other. Tim McMullen was named MVP of the sectional
run that wrapped up in Wayland on Sunday after 2 big pitching performances. Tuesday at Dwyer Stadium,
Coach Koukides changed things up by getting Kyler LaCarte the ball to start and did he deliver for his coach
and team! Kenny Saunders and Tommy Saunders have been just as impressive on the mound and just about
everyone else in the starting lineup has stepped up either at bat or in the field with huge moments! If you see
any of the parents or Coach’s wife around town, please give them a hug; they have been through a lot of
excitement and heart stopping action. A huge thanks to many people who have jumped on the bandwagon with
this team traveling to Way-Co and Batavia this past week. Let’s keep it going this Saturday in Lockport. This is
the farthest any baseball team in our school history has gone and we do not want to see it stop! I am so proud of
the boys and Coach and thank them for these thrilling times for our school community!

Peer Counselors Meet the Class of 2025 Wednesday, our Peer Counselors had the opportunity to meet their 6th grade Peer Kids for the first time!
Our Peer Counselors are next year's seniors, who were selected through an application process to help
ensure a smooth transition for the class of 2025 to our Junior High School. Our 6th grade students were
led by their Peer Counselors through a series of ice breaker activities, shared letters they had written to
one another, and even had a chance to practice opening a lock. They will see each other again on
Thursday, August 29 for 7th grade orientation! I would like to thank our counseling staff for their
outstanding work in putting this program together to ensure a quality transition for our students! There
was a lot of excitement and fun had by all.

Knights STEAM Day! Thursday, we ran our first ever STEAM Day for our Jr. High students and staff. STEAM stands for
Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. The goal of the day was to expose our students to the
areas STEAM pushes students to do; creativity, problem solving, teamwork, collaboration, and
troubleshooting. We also wanted to allow our teachers to see these types of learning experiences in
action in hopes that they can create similar learning opportunities within their content! We broke our
Knights up into 8 different groups and offered 8 different STEAM activities. The groups were Little
Bits, Bloxels, Escape Room/Engineering Games, Cardboard Construction, Sphero Maze, Keva Planks,
Egg Drop, and Makey Makey. We partnered with GVEP Libraries who provided all of the activities and
trained our teachers on how to conduct each activity. Coupled with our supplies and excitement, it was
an awesome day had by all! The culminating event for the day was hosting Luke Weaver, Avon CSD’s
STEAM Coach. Mr. Weaver shared his passion, experiences, and just how many careers are tied to
STEAM. He really stressed the huge opportunities that exist across so many industries. A huge thanks to
him, GVEP, our staff, and students for an awesome day of learning and collaboration! We look forward
to getting feedback from all and continuing these types of days!

Impressive Impact! Friday, our juniors and seniors participated in a DWI reenactment at Hartwood Park. It was an amazing
event that combined efforts with the Le Roy Police & Fire Department, Genesee County Sheriff, Mercy
Flight, and Cameron Brady Funeral Home. A huge thank you to Tim Hogle and Gerry Diskin from the
Le Roy Fire Department for coordinating this event! Students were given a close up encounter of
students making a poor choice and how that choice changed lives. As we enter the celebratory season of
prom, graduation parties, and other events, we hope as a community we can all make good decisions and
stay safe!
