As we move into our sixth year of Le Roy PRIDE (Perseverance, Responsibility, Involvement, Diversity & Empathy), we continue to evolve our efforts in what is a very vital part of our school—character education. We will continue our month-long theme events this year which you can review on page 6. We have worked with both our PRIDE committee and our Emerging Knights Leadership team to create great learning experiences for our school this year. Each year these moments bring us thought, action, and learning that are the core of who we are as a school. As we move into October, our focus will be Community Service! We are in the process of organizing multiple opportunities for students to give back! Stay tuned!

Career Lunch-N-Learn Series!

In conjunction with Genesee County BEA, we launched our first Career Lunch-N-Learn Series today! We are very excited about the opportunity for our students to have lunch with a professional! Our first speaker was Mr. Ben Gustafson, civil engineer at Hunt EAS. He thoughtfully shared his pathway in his career and about his position asking them great questions like; “How do science, technology, math, and engineering relate? How are they different?” We would like to thank Karyn Winters from the BEA who is organizing these lunches; it is a great partnership for our students and school community! Stay tuned for upcoming Career Lunch-N-Learn opportunities!

New Course Spotlight!

We are excited to continue to add to our vast course catalog each year based on student need and teacher strengths! I am excited to spotlight one of our new courses in our Business Department entitled Business Law taught by Mrs. Sarah Ford; here is her write up about what students will be experiencing this year!

New to the Business Department this year is Business Law (LAW 101 Fundamentals of the Law). In this course students will study how civil and criminal law governs society. Purchases, leases, contracts, divorces, environmental issues, and criminal offenses will be explored. Emphasis will be on development of those skills necessary to recognize and better deal with legal problems common in adult life. Legal knowledge will be applied in a fun and meaningful way through debate, guest speakers, internet research, and the mock trial process. Controversial issues and current legal events will be highlighted within each unit. This course provides useful information for every person, regardless of their career aspirations.

This course is the first to be offered here at Le Roy Jr.-Sr. High School through Monroe Community College’s Dual Enrollment Program. Click here to learn more about the Dual Enrollment Program. This course is a full year, 3 college credit course!

Student Success Center Info & Shadowing!

This week Sr. High Counselors Mrs. Ronan and Mr. Dwyer met with all juniors about a variety of upcoming college bound opportunities. This included information about the PSAT, Rochester Area College Visits, and our growing lists of colleges visiting our school (see page 7). They also introduced Mrs. Sue Zewan who I like to call our Knights’ personal job shadowing agent! She had students fill out a career interest form and is in our Student Success Center every Thursday at 1:30pm. We contract her from GVEP to meet with our students and set up job shadowing opportunities. This is free and unlimited for any of our students in grades 11 and 12! I cannot stress enough the importance of doing a job shadow! She can also be reached via email at [email protected]. Any questions, please contact the Student Success Center!

PSAT/NMSQT Coming Soon!

Juniors will be taking the PSAT/NMSQT on Wednesday, October 10th during periods 1-5. The Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test is a test that measures evidence-based reading and writing and math skills that are necessary for college-level work. More than one million high school students take it each year. Mrs. Ronan and Mr. Dwyer will do a score interpretation for the students in December. The PSAT/NMSQT gives students the opportunity to:

· Assess their reading, writing and language, and math skills

· Free personalized SAT practice - students will be able to link their College Board and Khan

Academy accounts to get a study plan based on their PSAT results

· Forecast SAT scores from their PSAT/NMSQT scores

· See how they compare with other college bound juniors who have taken the PSAT/NMSQT

· Participate in the Student Search Service by having their names sent to colleges and government

sponsored scholarship programs that are looking for students like them

· Qualify for scholarship and enrichment programs that use PSAT/NMSQT results

Tech Tip Pit Stop with Mrs. Bertrand: #04 Let’s Talk About Snapchat: Part 1

Of all the apps your kids might be using for instant messaging, Snapchat rates up there as number one. You’ve likely sent Snaps yourself as a way to connect with family and friends; if you are not familiar with Snapchat, check out this link to learn all the “ins & outs” of how the app works. The ease of sending pics & videos along with the fun filter options and Bitmoji connection

is what has made this app so attractive to tweens and teens. I know I enjoy receiving Snaps of my four year old nephew, but when my middle-school niece sent me an “S”....I had no idea what she was doing!

Let's talk about how Snapchat is influencing how our Knights are managing friendships, maintaining relationships and connecting socially through the app. So that “S” I kept receiving from my niece? That’s a Snapstreaks feature, where she sends a streak and I send one back to her and we see how long we can keep it up. How about “PMOYS?” Do you know what that means? Google that acronym and you’ll learn that this is another way kids are proving friendships or showing they are hanging out by asking each other to “put me on your Snapchat” by sharing a pic of their friend. The Bitmoji option is another way kids are checking in on their friends. If they have their location turned on and shared with friends, they’ll see where their friend is in live time. So for instance, when a kid tells one friend they can’t hang out and makes an excuse...but then that friend sees they are actually hanging out with another friend on the Snap Map...relationship strain is likely to occur!

Let’s talk about the Snap Map. If you haven't seen this, all you need to do is open the app and when you see the picture screen, use a two-finger pinch to pull in on that screen. You’ll get a map of the world along with a variety of multicolored zones. The colors on the Snap Map represent Snaps that anyone, anywhere have posted publicly. We’re talking anything! For example, check out the screenshot below of me on the map right now as I type this article. As I explore nearby locations, such as Rochester, Batavia, etc., I will see any posts that have been made public. Take a look at the Snap Map this week, and in my “Part 2” of Snapchat next week, we’ll dive deeper into the map, privacy settings and Snapping while driving. In the meantime, please feel free to reach out with questions via [email protected].

New to the Weekly Update this year will be a Tech Tip Pit Stop from our Instructional Technology Coach Mrs. Jen Bertrand! Thanks, Jen!
