The value represents the most important goal for the round. The resolution will guide you in your value selection.

Ex:Resolved: On balance, government restrictions on threatening speech are desirable.

Because the resolution specifically references government, a value such as a ‘Just Government’ would be appropriate.

•Provide an adequate and appropriate definition for your value.

•Interpretations may differ and it is imperative that you choose a definition that links to your stance.

Ex:According to the American Heritage Dictionary, 2014

Just may be defined as: Right or fair; equitable; impartial: a just decision

Government may be defined as:

The act or process of governing, especially the control and administration ofpublic policy in a political unit.

A criterion is the

standard by which

something can be

measured

Page 12: LD Powerpoint PresentationNotes in a debate round are called a “flow” and should contain the round’s: •Values •Criteria •Contentions •Arguments You will use your flow

•Providing a link to the value and case

•Setting limits upon the value, thus providing a means in which it may be achieved

•Serving as a weighing mechanism

Values are broad and, by definition, vague. The criterion clarifies the round by:

Page 13: LD Powerpoint PresentationNotes in a debate round are called a “flow” and should contain the round’s: •Values •Criteria •Contentions •Arguments You will use your flow

•Social Contract Theory•Pragmatism•Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs•Utility•Harm Principle

*Personal Pet Peeve: Criterion is singular. Criteria is plural. Don’t reference your ‘criteria’ unless for some strange reason you have more than one criterion.

•Lincoln logs are notched on the end connecting one log to another. In the same way, a criterion links the value to the resolution

•Your criterion will link your value to the resolution, providing limitations for a strong foundation on which to link your case

The resolution, value and criterion must link together…

Page 15: LD Powerpoint PresentationNotes in a debate round are called a “flow” and should contain the round’s: •Values •Criteria •Contentions •Arguments You will use your flow

A criterion must support the value, not simply restate it or offer a synonym…this is called “circular”.

Ex: As Sheldon stated on the Big Bang Theory when he told Leonard he didn’t have to offer a reason for moving out…

“It’s ultimately circular, i.e., I’m moving out because I’m moving out.”

•Contentions are the main arguments, or points, of your case. These points explain how the affirmative/negative action achieves your criterion.

•Remember our Lincoln Logs? The contentions in your case MUST link back to your value/criterion .

•Claims: Title of the argument

•Warrants: Reasons that the claims are true

We are operating in a time of school budget cuts and it would be very easy for districts to simply cut our

programs.

If you’re here today, you have an administration that supports speech and debate.

Any time you are given the opportunity, tell your school board members, superintendent, and principals how

grateful you are they are lending their support.
