The project

Lanes Group was commissioned by Carillion to clean and survey track drainage pipes along the railway line south east of Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

The line was being electrified and upgraded by a joint venture, which included Carillion, so it could be used for rail freight traffic.

The work was part of a wider Network Rail strategy to increase the capacity and flexibility of the Great Northern and Great Eastern (GNGE) rail network between Peterborough and Doncaster.

The rail line had been lowered either side of a road bridge to create the extra space needed for larger freight trains.

Trackside drain pipes then had to be cleaned and surveyed to ensure they had sufficient capacity to cope with winter rainfall.

Lanes Group’s depot in Derby was commissioned by Carillion to carry out the track drainage survey over two 12-hour night shifts.

A total of 11 catch pits and nearly 600 metres of 225 millimetre diameter trackside drains were de-silted and CCTV camera surveyed.

Keeping to Network Rail’s programme timetable was a key challenge.

All equipment was prepared well in advance, so it could be deployed quickly, maximising the amount of time spent working on site.

Rail drainage clean and survey

Network Rail excavation crews removed ballast and other large debris from the catch pits. A Lanes jet vac team then jetted through the lines. Finally, a Lanes mainline CCTV camera team carried out a detailed drain survey.

Three 3,000 gallon jet vac tankers were used, operating from the rail bridge.

One tanker provided constant jetting support, while the others continuously collected water from a roadside hydrant.

Three remote access jet vac units were also deployed in relay, allowing jetting to be carried out up to 300 metres from the main jet vac unit.

Pumps diverted water backed up behind drain blockages, so the lines could be effectively jetted.

Track drainage survey reports were compiled to be used to plan further improvements to the drainage system along this section of the line.
